EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) -- The Mother Goose Parade is an East County tradition dating back to 1947. But because of the pandemic, this year's parade will look a lot different. The sights and sounds will be virtual, thanks to the hard work of long-time El Cajon business owner, Patti Shryock. Besides running Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply, she's also a true historian of the Mother Goose Parade."I've been with Mother Goose since 1985," says Shryock. "I love to see Mother Goose out there, and people come up, especially the kids, and hold her. Then you get the parents talking about their memories of the parade, and being in their child's same position. This has been going on now for 74 years."And just like the parade, her business is also a fixture in El Cajon, opening its doors back in 1963. Shryock and her brother took over full operation in the mid-1980's."My dad passed away in 1985, and my mom in 1990. However, they gave us enough background, and we worked enough in the business, where we were able to continue it on," she said.Shryock says over time a lot of hard work and great employees have created a lot of success. But now they are facing an obstacle as they have never seen before, and that would be the COVID-19 pandemic."I never saw it coming," Shryock says.Uncertain times means they've had to think outside the box"Sanitizer wipes, I started making some myself," she added.Shryock and her team at Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply have persevered to keep the business going. The same can also be said about her effort to keep this year's Mother Goose Parade afloat. "We can't even get a parade down the street, let alone the people with all the distancing," said Shryock.And once again thinking outside the box, Shryock and her group helped find a way to keep this year's parade alive, and that is going virtual."I'm thinking if we did it this way we could get it done, and that's where we called on our wonderful directors to do it a different way," Shryock says.You can see the 74th annual Mother Goose Parade on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. PST on ABC 10News' website and social media pages. 2123

He said it normally takes him two minutes to cross the bridge."The Border Patrol agent said it's going to get worse," Amaya said.Meanwhile, business owners and elected officials warned of the economic consequences if President Donald Trump makes good on his threat last week to shut down all ports of entry along the southern border to stem the wave of asylum seekers.The United States and Mexico trade about .7 billion in goods daily, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which said closing the border would be "an unmitigated economic debacle" that would threaten 5 million American jobs.Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz, chairman of the Texas Border Coalition, said a closure would be catastrophic."Closing the border would cause an immediate depression in border state communities and, depending on the duration, a recession in the rest of the country," he said."Our business would end," Marta Salas, an employee at an El Paso shop near the border crossing that sells plastic flowers that are used on the Mexican side by families holding quincea?eras, the traditional coming-of-age celebrations.Salas said her whole family would be affected if the president closed the border."There are Americans who live there. I have nephews who come to UTEP, to grade school, to high school every day," Salas said.Apprehensions all along the southern border have soared in recent months, with border agents on track to make 100,000 arrests and denials of entry there this month, more than half of them families with children.In addition to reassigning hundreds of inspectors, Nielsen has asked for volunteers from non-immigration agencies within her department and sent a letter to Congress requesting resources and broader authority to deport families faster. Just make sure you can still afford the payments and aren’t necessarily banking on that home also becoming a big pay out down the road because the housing market is cyclical and eventually will fall down again.“Rushing to sell your house or buy a house because of the short term isn’t a prudent move,” says Danny McAuliffe, CFP, wealth advisor and head of planning at Perigon Wealth Management. “Making decisions based on what you can afford and make sense for you and your family, that is going to be a better situation for the long term.”If you’re thinking of making that high- to low-cost market move, Herman warns that you should at least live in the place first by renting to see if you really like it. This is especially true for seniors who dream of ditching colder climates for warmer places.Not only does it make sense to get a feel for the area in which you want to live that you can’t achieve while on vacation, but you also will learn if you have the temperament to be away from family for so long. Otherwise, you’ll cash out now and have to buy back in—and who knows what the market will be like then.2. Have Your Home Appraised to Ditch Mortgage InsurancePrivate mortgage insurance (PMI) is usually tacked onto your monthly mortgage payment if you put down less than 20% on the property when you purchased it. PMI is there to protect lenders in case you walk away. But if your home is suddenly worth more, you may hold enough equity to request to have PMI cancelled.To do this, you need to show lenders the home has increased in value, which means paying for a home appraisal. Those typically cost between 0 and 0. Meanwhile, PMI typically costs between 0.05% and 1% of the loan amount annually, which means the appraisal will pay for itself.If you’re staying put, you should also reassess your insurance to make sure it matches what your home is now worth, says McAuliffe. You can use that money to make renovations to your current home—which may be tax deductible, says McAuliffe—or pay off high interest credit card debt—as long as you don’t then rack up debt on them again.You can take equity out in several ways, including through a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance, where you pull the equity out in, well, cash. Homeowners at least 62 years old also can take out a reverse mortgage, which lets them borrow from their home’s equity.Herman says money drawn from equity could be used to buy another property, either as a second home, or to rent out. But only think about becoming a landlord if you have tolerance for it and can cover the mortgage in the case the property is empty between tenants, or tenants stop paying.Just make sure that you aren’t taking all of the equity out. People who got in trouble in 2007 and 2008 “pulled all of their equity out,” Herman says. “When prices dropped, they were stuck because they had used all the equity up in their home for something else.” So don’t press your luck and strip your house of all its old and new equity, or else you may wind up with a house worth less than what you owe on it. 6432

(KGTV) — A family jewelry shop in El Cajon is out tens of thousands of dollars after a brazen robbery Friday.A couple entered Ishtar Jewelry Store on Avocado Avenue and began browsing around. It was a seemingly ordinary evening."They were looking for different pieces of jewelry, bracelets, necklaces," said Nadin Toma, the store owner's daughter. "My mom was the one who was helping them out. The female found a piece that she liked."After that, Toma said the woman claimed she needed to get her wallet from the car to purchase the piece of jewelry."Our door to get in is an electric door," explained Toma. "We have to buzz anyone in and out just for security purposes."So, the woman was buzzed out, but Toma said she held the door open.That's when the man by her side made his move, jumping over the display counter, snatching up a handful of gold chains, then running out of the wide-open front door."They just grabbed and ran as fast as they could," Toma said. "They got away."Toma estimates the cost of the gold chains were anywhere from ,000 to ,000.But, the thief also left something behind. His fanny pack hooked onto the front door and broke off his body as he ran away.Toma said inside the fanny pack was the suspect's identification card, which she gave to police.She also said a Good Samaritan wrote down the license plate number of the car the couple used to get away."With any robbery, it's very painful for anyone who goes through it," said Toma. "Unfortunately, it happened to us."Toma is hoping the ID card and the license plate number will help police track down the suspect.El Cajon Police is actively investigating. 1666
