BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- China and Russia Tuesday pledged to work together to take their strategic partnership of coordination to a new high."It serves the strategic interests and common aspiration of both countries to elevate the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination," Chinese President Hu Jintao told the visiting Russian State Duma Chairman Boris Gryzlov Tuesday.Gryzlov is leading a delegation to Beijing for the fourth meeting of the cooperative committee between China's National People's Congress (NPC) and Russian State Duma.Hu visited Moscow ten days ago to attend the celebrations marking the 65th anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War over Nazi Germany.Recalling the visit to Moscow, Hu said he was impressed by the commemorative events.Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with Boris Gryzlov, chairman of Russia's State Duma, in Beijing, capital of China, May 18, 2010.Gryzlov appreciated Hu's attendance at the commemoration, stressing Russia and China share the same view of the war.While reviewing the bilateral relationship this year, Hu highlighted close contacts between leaders, strong, substantive cooperation, and frequent people-to-people exchanges.Hu said the complicated and capricious international situation posed important opportunities and challenges for China and Russia."China would like to work with Russia to boost the sound and fast growth of bilateral relationship," Hu said.On legislative front, Hu called for the legislative bodies of China and Russia to play out their advantages and contribute to the overall bilateral relationship.Earlier Tuesday, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, held talks with Gryzlov at the Great Hall of the People.

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said Saturday it would assemble more than 1,100 engineers and workers from across the country to dig over 1,600 wells in the country's southwest, where a severe drought is likely to continue.All of those professionals would be arriving at the droughty areas by April 1 and the first batch set off on Saturday, said the MLR in a statement on its website.More than 1,600 wells would be drilled, providing 200,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day for 2 million people and 1 million head of livestock, said the ministry, hoping to finish digging 1,400 of the wells by May 10.So far, the MLR has already dug over 100 wells, which can produce drinking water for more than 100,000 people.The drought, which has left southwest China suffering since last Autumn, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological agencies.It has left 18 million residents and 11.7 million heads of livestock in the region with drinking water shortages and caused direct economic losses of 23.7 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars), data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.

  

ISLAMABAD, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese embassy official Tuesday called on an official of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to donate 30,000 U.S. dollars on behalf of the China Red Cross Society (CRCS) to assist the residents affected by the landslide in northern Pakistan early this year.Muhammad Ilyas Khan, PRCS secretary general, asked Yao Jing, counselor of the Chinese embassy to Pakistan, to convey his appreciation to the CRCS for its generous donation to Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan due to the landslide in January, 2010.He said that Chinese friends always extend assistance to Pakistan in difficult times and Pakistan is proud of its friendship with China.At present, the local government and PRCS are working hard to provide relief to the villages. The government is also trying to control the damage and tackle with the challenge caused by the lake in the area.On January 4, a serious landslide occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan and formed a huge barrier lake. The slide blocked over 20,000 local residents in Upper Hunza from outside. The Pakistani government is conducting the rescue and relief work . On January 19, at the request of the Pakistani government, the Chinese side made special arrangements to open the Kunjirap border and facilitate the purchase of relief goods from China and its clearance.The China Road and Bridge Corporation, which is conducting the project of upgradation of the Karakoram Highway, has also provided engineering consultations and equipment to help the Pakistani side to deal with the problem.

  

BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China will step up efforts to crack major corruption cases, especially those with collusion between leading officials and business people, according to the full text of a speech delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao.The document was released on Sunday. Wen delivered the speech at a State Council meeting on this year's anti-corruption work on Tuesday.In the speech, Wen said efforts should be made to investigate those who trade power for money, and those who take advantage of power to do illegal things in areas including urban planning, approving construction programs, mineral resources exploration and bidding and tendering.Negligence and misconduct behind major work safety incidents and food safety scandals would also be probed.In the speech, Wen outlined key areas of the government's anti-corruption fight this year, including government funded projects, state-owned enterprises and financial institutions.He called for intensified efforts to trace the fugitives and their illicit money and property, and vowed "not to let those who commit corruption to go unpunished or get a penny out of their illicit gain."Government officials should strictly follow a code of ethics issued earlier this year by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to ensure clean practice in their work and to prevent corruptionThe guidelines specify 52 unacceptable practices, including officials accepting cash or financial instruments as gifts, or officials using their influence to benefit their spouses and children with regards to their employment, stock trading or business.And leaders of the State Council or central government departments should refrain from attending ceremonies or forums sponsored by companies, he added.Expenses on central government organs would be cut by 5 percent this year and government funded overseas trips, vehicle purchase, and reception expenditure should be reduced consequently, he said.
