WASHINGTON (AP) — A statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee that represented Virginia in the U.S. Capitol has been removed.Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement that workers removed the statue from the National Statuary Hall Collection early Monday.“The Confederacy is a symbol of Virginia’s racist and divisive history, and it is past time we tell our story with images of perseverance, diversity, and inclusion,” said Northam. Each state is entitled to display two statues in the collection. Lee’s statue had stood with George Washington’s statue since 1909 as Virginia’s representatives in the Capitol. The Lee statue had been one among 13 located in the Crypt of the Capitol, representing the 13 original colonies.Northam had requested its removal and a state commission has recommended replacing Lee’s statue with a likeness of Barbara Johns.Johns was an American civil rights leader who protested poor conditions at her all-Black high school in the town of Farmville in 1951. Her court case became part of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools.Virginia’s General Assembly must approve the replacement before a sculptor can be commissioned for the new statue. If approved, Johns would stand alongside Washington, and would be the only teenager represented in the collection.“I look forward to seeing a trailblazing young woman of color represent Virginia in the U.S. Capitol, where visitors will learn about Barbara Johns’ contributions to America and be empowered to create positive change in their communities just like she did,” said the governor.U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia tweeted out a video of the Lee statue being taken down. 4:02 am. 12/21/20. Crypt of the US Capitol. pic.twitter.com/2ttGecsj5B— Tim Kaine (@timkaine) December 21, 2020 1827

VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - A man accused of killing his 7-year-old daughter at the family's Oceanside home pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder, assault and child cruelty charges.Pedro Araujo, 27, is charged in last Wednesday's slaying of Mariah Araujo. Police have not commented on the cause of her death, but the criminal complaint indicates that a knife was used.Mariah was stabbed at least 10 times in the neck and upper body, prosecutors said. She also had defensive wounds from the attack. In addition to murder, the defendant is charged with assault on a child in regard to Mariah, and misdemeanor child cruelty involving her 6-year- old sister.RELATED: 7-year-old found dead in Oceanside home, father arrestedHe faces 26 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges. The children's grandmother made an emergency call shortly after 11 a.m. to report that she had just gone to the family's house in the 3500 block of Las Vegas Drive to pick up Mariah and her sister but had been unable to find the older girl, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said. The woman reported that her son -- the girls' father -- had been evasive about the whereabouts of his elder daughter and had blood on him, Bussey said.Officers went to the residence near Emerald Isle Golf Course and searched it, finding the victim's body in a bathroom. Detectives questioned Araujo and took him into custody on suspicion of murdering his daughter, Bussey said.Araujo's arraignment was initially scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed twice because he was being held in ``enhanced observation housing,'' according to court staff.Members of the girl's family gathered at the Vista courthouse last Friday and told reporters that Araujo was unstable and should not have been anywhere near his daughters.Karina Avina, Mariah's aunt, said Araujo did not have custody of the children as numerous Child Protective Services cases were open and ongoing against him, though the circumstances of those cases was unclear.``We want him to pay the max. That's what we want,'' Avina said. ``We don't want a few years. We don't want him to get out. He needs to pay his whole life.''Araujo is being held without bail. He's next due at the Vista courthouse on Aug. 14 for a readiness conference. 2267

VISTA, CA (KGTV) — The man accused of intentionally driving a U-Haul van into a crowd of people outside of an Encinitas bar, pleaded not guilty to serious charges in a Vista courtroom Wednesday.Christian Davis, 28, stood next to an attorney with his head down as he was formally charged with two counts of attempted premeditated murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of felony driving under the influence of alcohol.Deputy District Attorney, Kim Coulter, said the incident early Sunday morning started at the Saloon and Shelter bar when Davis was kicked out.RELATED: Video shows driver slamming into crowd outside Encinitas bar"He was asked to leave because he was highly intoxicated and it was time for him to go," said Coulter.Once he was kicked out, Coulter said he got into a verbal argument with two bouncers, then threatened them."It escalated and culminated with Davis telling the security guards 'you're going to regret doing this, I’m going to come back and I’m going to kill you,'" she said.Moments later, witnesses saw the U-Haul heading for a crowd of people standing outside of the bars.RELATED: Man arrested after driving into crowd outside Encinitas barThe incident was captured on a passerby's dash cam video."He reversed out of a 7-Eleven and he came barreling down a sidewalk in front of Shelter bar, right into a crowd of people," said Coulter. "It’s our position that he used the U-Haul passenger van as a deadly weapon."Good Samaritans rushed to hold Davis in place until deputies arrived and arrested him. Sadly, two men who were outside of the bar at the wrong time were seriously hurt."A 25-year-old victim has had a severe injury to his leg, he’s had his third surgery today," said Coulter. The other victim, a 24-year-old, was also left hospitalized with severe injuries."He has two collapsed lungs, fractured ribs, a broken arm and he did spend time in the ICU," she said.Bail was set at million. WASHINGTON (AP) — Contested congressional seats in the nation's suburbs are becoming battlefields, and each party is wielding what it hopes will be a potent weapon. During the pandemic, Democrats are widely returning to the health care theme they used in 2018 to capture House control. In some races, Republicans are promoting the need for law and order after racial justice protests this summer that sometimes turned violent. Even in campaigns where the GOP has chosen a different theme, President Donald Trump's recent focus on law and order can color the debate. Each side has tested its messaging carefully and thinks the other side has chosen a losing issue. 671
