NGARI/CHENGDU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, known as the "Roof of the World", on Thursday opened its fourth civil airport in farwest Ngari area, shortening a trip to the regional capital Lhasa to one and half hours from three or four days by car.An Airbus 319 landed at Gunsa Airport in Ngari Prefecture at 10:20 a.m., marking the airport's official opening.The passenger flight from Chengdu, capital of the neighboring Sichuan Province, was operated by Air China's southwestern branch.An Air China flight would fly from Chengdu to Lhasa and on to Ngari every Tuesday and Friday, said Bao Lida, a spokesman with the company's southwestern branch based in Chengdu."The flight leaves Chengdu at 5:50 a.m. and arrives in Lhasa two hours later," said Bao. "It leaves Lhasa at 8:40 a.m. and arrives Ngari at 10:20 a.m."At an altitude of 4,274 meters with a 4,500-meter runway, Gunsa Airport is now the third highest airport in the world. Bamda Airport in Qamdo in eastern Tibet and Kangding Airport in Sichuan Province sit 4,334 meters and 4,280 meters above sea level, respectively.Annual capacity of Gunsa Airport is expected to reach 120,000 passengers by 2020.Before the airport opened, Ngari was linked to Lhasa only by road, taking three or four days to cover the 1,600-km route."Bad transportation infrastructure was the biggest bottleneck crippling Ngari's development, but now with a 100-minute flight, I believe it would bring talents and business opportunities to Ngari ," said Dawa Tashi, deputy secretary of the prefecture committee of the Communist Party of China.But the pricey flight fare of 2,590 yuan (382 U.S. dollars) for the 100-minute flight from Ngari to Lhasa might be out of many people's reach in a prefecture where the annual per capita income was only 3,148 yuan in 2009, which was a 16.8 percent increase compared with that in 2008.Construction of the airport began in May 2007 and cost an estimated 1.65 billion yuan (241.22 million U.S. dollars).The flight distance between Chengdu and Ngari is 2,300 km. BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- A swollen subtributary of the Yangtze River has sent a deluge to Danjiangkou Reservoir, a major reservoir in central China's Henan and Hubei provinces, the state flood control agency said Sunday.The water level of the Danjiang River, a tributary of the Hanjiang River, rose to 217.59 meters Saturday afternoon, with a water flow of 10,000 cubic meters per second, the highest since 1953, said a statement of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.Hanjiang River is the second largest tributary of the Yangtze River, China's biggest river.Flood gushed into the Danjiangkou Reservoir, at the confluence of the Danjiang and Hanjiang rivers, 34,100 cubic meters a second early Sunday, the second biggest deluge since the reservoir was built in 1968.Liu Ning, vice minister of water resources and secretary general of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said Sunday that local authority should closely monitor the weather, and step up monitoring efforts against potential flood risks.Premier Wen Jiabao has ordered local governments to adopt scientific measures to prepare well for "more serious floods and disasters" as some of the country's major rivers surpassed their warning levels.Wen said China was at a "crucial stage" for flood control during an inspection tour in Hubei Province that began July 23.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior Communist Party of China official Monday said China is ready to enhance cooperation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).Li Yuanchao, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with a delegation of the Workers' Party of Korea, which was led by Kim Chang Ryong, the DPRK's Minister of Land and Environment Protection, in Beijing.Hailing the constant growth of China-DPRK relations, Li, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, reviewed the successful visit by the DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il in May.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Kim Jong Il reached important consensus on promoting bilateral pragmatic cooperation during that visit.China would work with the DPRK to fulfill the consensus and expand bilateral cooperation to push forward China-DPRK relations, Li said.Kim Chang Ryong said the DPRK held the unswerving policy of cementing and promoting friendship with China. BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy had conducted a large scale of live-ammunition training exercise in the South China Sea, according to a front-page report on Thursday's PLA Daily newspaper.The exercise, which was carried out on July 26, brought together a large group of warships, submarines and combat aircraft.During the exercise, warships and submarines from the Navy's South China Sea Fleet performed precision strikes on surface targets by firing guided missiles while surface warships conducted anti-missile air defense operations, said the PLA's official newspaper.A naval aviation fleet also participated in air control operations, according to the report, which did not specify the exact location of the training or the number of participating warships.In overseeing the training, General Chen Bingde, PLA's chief of the General Staff, said that the PLA should "pay close attention to the development of situation and tasks" and make "solid preparation for military struggle which depends on massive military training" .
