A 6th-grade student at Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School in Martin County, Florida has been charged with a misdemeanor after he simulated a shooting, pretending to have a semi-automatic weapon.The Martin County Sheriff's Office said students told teachers that the 6th-grade student allegedly said he had a gun for protection. A school resource officer searched the student and his backpack and did not find a weapon. The child was allowed back to class, but a deputy said, in class, the student put his hands up as if he was firing a semi-automatic weapon and began to make pop noises. The Martin County Sheriff's Office was called out to the school and the student was arrested for disrupting a school function. He is charged with a misdemeanor. No weapon was found. Parents were notified that there was an incident."It was very unnerving and disturbing and once again it's the kids that are suffering and it freaked me out after dropping off my son today, giving him a kiss and knowing how the other parents feel about yesterday and that the kids aren't here. After 40 years of making wishes come true, Make-A-Wish America is celebrating something else.The organization chose to celebrate through the eyes of one California teen who had one special and unique wish.Just like a summer camp, Kamp Karina has an activity list that's packed full of fun with dancing, magic, science, and even storytime. All of it was Karina's idea and wish.“The guy who does Olaf’s voice! He appeared there and I was like what the heck! That I had no idea of it surprised me and it made me really happy. It was a shocking moment and it made me really happy,” Karina said.The 16-year-old Central California teen was surprised because, when granted an experience from Make-A-Wish, she really one had one thing in mind.“I actually didn’t know what I wanted to wish for. All I know is I wanted to give, not get,” Karina said.Karina says she's finally free. After seven months of brutal treatment for Lymphoma, she feels like herself again and wants to focus on things she loves, like music and cooking. But her wish is always to help others because she can relate.“I know how it feels to be sick and not have any idea if you’re going to make it or what’s next or - it’s hard, mentally and physically,” Karina said.Karina is part of a new generation of kids who want something bigger, who wants more than receiving something or meeting someone.“But the newest wish kids, which is so inspired, want to go to the fifth idea which is give,” Make-A-Wish CEO Richard Davis said. said. “Karina is embodiment of that. She wanted to give kids a day to forget they're sick.”And so Karina’s wish was granted, and it worked. Hundreds of children from around the country like youths in Connecticut, Florida, South Dakota, California, got to attend Kamp Karina virtually.“We’re introducing a sense of philanthropy and love and care and if you think the world needs anything right now, and I know we need a lot of things, but this hope and the spirit of people working around a child to make their life better is about the most wonderful antidote for anything we’re dealing with that I can think of,” Davis said.Make-a-Wish grants 15,000 wishes a year across America to children who medically qualify. Most of the time, the wish is easily granted.“My favorite ones are the simple ones: I want a dog. I want a blue guitar,” Davis said. “I want to be mayor for a day.”And above all else, it's what comes with that wish that makes Make-A-Wish magical.“We bring families into this right away because it changes the outcome, it certainly changes the trajectory it gives them something to look forward to,” Davis said.When asked if her wish came through, Karina said. “Yes. (KGTV) - The West Fire Benefit Dinner and Live Auction held Saturday night in Alpine raised at least ,000 for the families who lost everything.A final tally of all the money raised could take up to a week; all of it going to the Alpine Foundation. The Community Resource Team (CRT) will distribute the funds based on merit. "We're a case management agency for long-term recovery and that's getting people from the point that they're at now, to the end when they're in safe and sanitary conditions and what we hope to do is fill in any gaps," Case Manager with CRT Dawn Hubert said.More than 400 people attended the standing room only event.The phoenix emblazoned on the center of the program a fitting metaphor for the families who have been working through ashes over the past month and a half.Colin Campbell is living the transition, telling 10News he was far from the flames when the West Fire swept through, but his heart was at the family ranch."He said you've got about a minute to escape the fire," Campbell said a Sheriff's Deputy was the one knocking on his parents' door, helping them and his brother escape the imminent danger."My dad literally left without his phone his wallet, anything," he said.The next day, he came to see the damage. (KGTV) - An Alpine woman who tested positive for COVID-19 says her quarantine turned into a nightmare as a postal carrier delivered a package.This past weekend, Tamica got a COVID test after three co-workers tested positive. She also tested positive and remains asymptomatic."Since I got that Sunday, I've been quarantining at home," said Tamica.On Tuesday, past 1 p.m., as the mail truck pulled up to her apartment off Tavern Road, her two 80-lb. dogs ran to the front door and started barking. She says the door was open but the screen door was shut, as the postal carrier stood outside, at the door, with something in his hand."They were instantly pawing at their face and backed up, and acting weird ... jumping up and down and making a whining noise," said Tamica.Tamica believes the postal carrier had used his pepper spray. At that point, Tamica says the dogs jumped on the door and pushed it open. They ran out, and she ran after them. Tamica says the letter carrier sprayed toward one dog as it ran off, before turning to her other dog."I just jumped in front of my dog. He's wasn't doing anything. He wasn't barking. He was just sitting there .... He's a golden retriever and very friendly ... The postal carrier is spraying us, yelling and just spraying wildly," Tamica said.Tamica says that went on for about a minute, and it seemed liked forever."I was mad, scared, ready to cry … yelling at him to stop, stop, stop!" said Tamica.She says he finally did. Her dogs' eyes were left shut and stinging for hours. Her eyes were also ripe with pain. Tamica filed a complaint with the Postal Service."It's outrageous. This was not warranted at all," said Tamica.A different version of events has emerged from the postal carrier's statements.According to a USPS spokesperson, he claims he never sprayed through the screen door, didn't intend to pepper-spray Tamica, and only started spraying when both dogs were outside, lunging at him, to allow him to "leave the area."The spokesperson adds that based on the statements collected, they are standing by their postal carrier's version of events. They did apologize for Tamica getting pepper-sprayed in the incident.They also issued the following statement:"The Postal Service places the safety of its employees as a top priority. Letter carriers fearing for their safety due to a loose or unrestrained pet may stop delivery and ask homeowners to pick up their mail at the Post Office until the pet is restrained. In cases where a carrier sees a dog roaming and can’t discern where it resides, delivery could be interrupted to the entire neighborhood.In 2019, San Diego ranked #10 in the country for dog attacks on letter carriers. Dogs can be protective of their territory and may interpret the actions of letter carriers as a threat. Please take precautions when accepting mail in the presence of your pet. When a carrier comes to your home, keep your dog inside, away from the door in another room. Any dog can bite. Even the friendliest dog may bite when startled or surprised. If the dog is physically or mentally unhealthy, is in pain, feels threatened, or is protecting its food or a favorite toy, it can bite.The letter carriers at your local Post Office deliver every day.
