SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of fatally shooting a 27-year-old man in an alley in the La Presa area south of Spring Valley, authorities said.Deputies responding to a report of gunfire shortly after 1:20 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Delrose Avenue and Elkelton Boulevard found 27-year-old Carlo Avila of Santee in an alley with at least one gunshot wound, according to sheriff's officials.Paramedics responded, but Avila was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. STANLEY, Idaho — Evacuations are underway because of a fire burning west of Stanley, Idaho.Forest spokesman Mike Williamson says the Wapiti fire is1,200 acres. The call came in at 2:12 p.m. Saturday afternoon.Boise County Sheriffs are evacuating the Sawtooth lodge, nearby campgrounds, recreational trails and residences.A type 2 incident management team has been ordered and will arrive around 6 p.m. Sunday. Williamson says seven engines, two type 1 helicopters, one type 3 helicopter, three air tankers and one hand crew are responding to the fire.There is no estimated containment at this time, the cause of the fire is under investigation. 662

Slowly but steadily, caravan migrants who trekked across Mexico are pleading their cases to US authorities on why they should be granted asylum.Nearly half of them have now been accepted to begin processing by US authorities at the border with Mexico, Alex Mensing -- whose group, Pueblo Sin Fronteras, organized the caravan -- said Wednesday.Caravan organizers said 49 Central American migrants began asylum processing on Wednesday, bringing the total of those accepted for processing to 74.On Tuesday, 17 Central American migrants were taken in by US Customs and Border Protection (CPB) for asylum processing, said Viridiana Vidal, whose group Pueblo Sin Fronteras organized the caravan.The group was predominately made up of mothers and their children.However, CPB says it processed 28 between Monday and Tuesday. (KGTV) - Despite Governor Gavin Newsom's orders, students at a private school in Spring Valley are scheduled to return to class in a few weeks.When Heartland Christian Homeschool Center begins its school year on Sept. 1, it will include in-school learning. Classified as a private school, the pre-kindergarten-to-12th grade school combines homeschooling with several days of in-person instruction every week.The plans come despite the governor’s orders banning in-school classes for counties still on the watch list. Right now, San Diego County remains on that list.Principal Lynda Hansen told ABC 10news, it's "important" for kids to be back in class, adding her school is "following all CDC guidelines."The state is allowing elementary schools to apply for waivers to the COVID-19 orders. Hansen says she'll apply for the waiver, but it likely won't affect her decision to open.The school’s COVID-19 section does list its precautions, including stepped-up disinfecting, encouraging social distancing, and masks for staff when close to students. Masks will not be mandatory for students.The mask issue is a point of concern for students at another private school with similar plans. Last week, ABC 10News reported on Foothills Christian Middle School in El Cajon.A letter sent to parents spelled out reopening plans in September, including masks being optional. That led to frustration for parents who emailed ABC 10News. The school cited a lack of evidence that masks prevent COVID-19 transmission in children.A county spokesperson says the have several tools for private schools out of compliance, beginning with education and on-site visits.
