The observatory atop the Empire State Building has a dizzying new look with floor-to-ceiling, 360-degree windows 102 floors above New York City.The remodeled observatory opens to the public Saturday. It was unveiled to the media Thursday.More than 4 million annual visitors to the 1931 Art Deco skyscraper — about 60% from abroad — will be offered an unobstructed view of the city and far beyond through panoramic floor-to-ceiling sheets of glass. They replace old windows that were half the size.For a nocturnal view of New York, visitors have until 1:15 a.m. to take a new, high-speed, translucent elevator to the 102nd floor. Now visible from the interior on the way up are the building’s tower lights, whose colors change daily to celebrate holidays or people.On the way up to the high new perch are an additional 10,000 square feet (930 sq. meters) of fresh exhibits, including a replica of the moving hand of King Kong, the monster gorilla in the 1933 film that climbs the building, plunging to its death amid an attack by Helldiver military planes.Also on display are photos of actors in movies shot there.The cost to get to the observatory at 1,250 feet (380 meters) above Fifth Avenue has not changed. But now, visitors are promised shorter lines that have often stretched out onto Fifth Avenue, spilling into an elbow-to-elbow lobby crowd before even getting into an elevator.The entrance to the observatories has been switched to the side of the building on West 34th Street, where added security stations help move the crowd along. Tickets may be purchased at electronic kiosks installed only last year, in addition to online purchases.The building also has remodeled its famous open-air observatory on the 86th floor, which still requires a ticket. Walls were opened between the interior space and the open-air terrace so city views emerge immediately after exiting the elevators.The four-year project cost 5 million and was financed by Empire State Realty Trust Inc.Remodeling was a daunting task, said project manager Robert Krizman.Workers mounted metal baskets suspended outside the 103rd floor, wearing harnesses attached to the building. Harvard Law Professor Jack Goldsmith has a very unique connection to the case, to help determine the truth from the tale.It’s been hailed for the amazing acting, and epic directing, but “The Irishman” truly is a work of fiction when it comes to the storyline about Jimmy Hoffa.The legendary Teamsters leader vanished on July 30, 1975. He was last seen in the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills. Hoffa thought he was going to a reconciliation meeting with two mob bosses – New Jersey Teamsters official Tony Provenzano and Detroit mafia captain Tony Giacalone.“The Irishman” glorifies the late Teamster and alleged hit man Frank Sheeran. Sheeran’s so-called confession that he killed Hoffa at the mob’s request was made public in 2003 when author Charles Brandt released the book “I Heard You Paint Houses.” The movie brings that story to life on the big screen – but Hoffa experts say it’s historically just plain wrong."Good art, bad history," says Goldsmith. Goldsmith used to work at the highest levels of the Department of Justice. He’s also the stepson of Chuckie O’Brien – Hoffa’s foster son who was once thought to have driven Hoffa to his death.Goldsmith’s recent book “In Hoffa’s Shadow” reveals what the FBI case agents really think happened to Hoffa."Sheeran was not involved in killing Hoffa," he says. "And he wasn’t actually nearly as close to Hoffa as he was portrayed in the film."Goldsmith says the feds watched a video of Sheeran’s alleged confession—and call it a lie. "They all think it’s preposterous," he says.Goldsmith says Sheeran was caught on FBI surveillance tape telling close friends he wasn’t even in Detroit on the day Hoffa vanished."He had gas receipts, he was at dinner that evening," Goldsmith says. "Nowhere near Detroit, there were 18 people who saw him and he even said in a letter soon thereafter that he gave the FBI all of that evidence why he wasn’t in Detroit."In the movie, Sheeran shoots Hoffa in the vestibule of this home on Beaverland St. on Detroit’s west side.Investigators removed some of the floorboards where blood was found back in 2004 – but the blood did not belong to Hoffa."There’s zero evidence – none at all – that connects Hoffa or Sheeran being there," Goldsmith says.Goldsmith says his stepfather, Chuckie O’Brien hasn’t watched the movie – but he suspects O’Brien would be upset that he’s still being portrayed as the driver who picked Hoffa up at the restaurant. Goldsmith says the feds believe the known whereabouts of O’Brien that day make that impossible- and they no longer consider O’Brien a suspect."He would not have had time to have gone to the Machus Red Fox, picked up Hoffa, and taken him somewhere else," Goldsmith says. Goldsmith also says Sheeran’s claim that they picked Hoffa up at 2:45 contradicts the 3:30pm phone call Hoffa made to his wife from a pay phone in the parking lot."There’s evidence he called his wife Josephine out at the lake where they lived," Goldmisth says. "At 3:30 in the afternoon, that he was tired of waiting for Anthony Giacolone, and that he was going to come home And then that’s the last thing we know about Hoffa. The California Public Utilities Commission voted Wednesday to open an investigation into pre-emptive power outages that blacked out large parts of the state for much of October as strong winds sparked fears of wildfires.The decision came after hearing from the public on the many hardships the blackouts caused for residents.The state's largest utility, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., initiated multiple rounds of shut-offs and plunged nearly 2-point-5 million people into darkness throughout northern and central California.Some of the outages lasted for several days.PG&E officials insisted on the shut-offs for public safety, but infuriated residents and a parade of public officials.Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas and Electric also shut off power but to far fewer people.The outages raised concerns about whether the utilities properly balanced the need to provide reliable service with public safety and were properly planned and executed.CPUC President Marybel Batjer ordered the investigation last month and the five-member commission gave its approval given the public frustration.The outages were astonishing for a state that is one of the economic powerhouses in the world.People made frantic dashes for cash and gas as businesses watched their goods spoil.Some elderly and disabled people were trapped in their apartments with elevators out of service.PG&E initiated five rounds of blackouts, with the smallest affecting about 30,000 people and the largest affecting nearly 2.5 million.Residents in San Francisco suburbs and in Northern California wine country were without power for days.Bill Johnson, CEO of Pacific Gas & Electric, said the outages were the right call and kept people safe, although a transmission line in Sonoma County that was not powered off malfunctioned minutes before a wildfire erupted last month, forcing about 180 thousand people to evacuate.The company is in bankruptcy and faces 30 billion dollars in liabilities after its equipment was found to have started several deadly wildfires in 2017 and 2018, including the year-old Camp Fire that killed 85 in Paradise. 2142

The Inspector General released a report on Tuesday that contained photos of severe overcrowding inside two Texas border processing centers. The Inspector General toured the facilities during the week of June 10. In the report, inspectors expressed concern over the safety and health of both agents and detainees. “We are concerned that overcrowding and prolonged detention represent an immediate risk to the health and safety of DHS agents and officers, and to those detained,” the report said. “At the time of our visits, Border Management told us there had already been security incidents among adult males at multiple facilities.
