JINAN, May 3 (Xinhua) -- A pipeline owned by China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) resumed operation Monday afternoon after it leaked 240 tonnes of oil in east China's Shandong Province.The company immediately shut down the cracked pipeline and blocked the leakage site after the leakage was spotted, said a spokesman with Sinopec.It recovered 220 tonnes of oil, which had leaked to nearby farmland and roads, the spokesman said.The leakage, which was discovered at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, occurred at a section of the Dongying-Huangdao pipeline near Jiulong Township in Jiaozhou City."The influence of the leakage on the farmland could be controlled within the minimum level," he said.Testing results from the local environmental protection authorities showed the leakage didn't contaminate the nearby water sources.An initial investigation showed the pipeline crack was caused by a digger driver who unauthorizedly excavated the earth above the pipeline to bury the waste at a construction site in Jiulong Township.Police are searching for the driver, who fled after the accident.

NANNING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The government of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region issued a fire ban Saturday ahead of the upcoming Tomb-sweeping Day, in a bid to prevent forest fires against the backdrop of a prolonged drought.According to the ban, tomb-goers are forbidden to burn paper money or incenses and to set off fireworks in forest zones from April 3 to 17.They are also banned from burning straws, leaves, charcoal and others in forest zones.Violators will be fined or even detained and prosecuted, according to the ban.As of Wednesday, the drought, which began in southwestern China last year, has left 19.4 million people with water shortages and affected 6.48 million hectares of farmland in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi and Chongqing, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.It is a tradition for Chinese to visit family graves during the Qingming or Tomb-sweeping Day, which falls on April 5 this year. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's disaster relief authorities Wednesday launched an emergency response plan to help victims of the rainstorms and flooding in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which has left at least 30 dead.The China National Committee for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs initiated a level IV emergency response plan and dispatched a working team to help guide relief work in the flood-hit zone.Heavy rains began pounding many places in Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday.
