SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 140 women, children and their family members will live inside Golden Hall for at least the next three months. The theater's second floor concourse will serve as a temporary bridge shelter while the city installs a new shelter tent at the corner of 17th and Imperial. Father Joe's Villages will manage the shelter, which is to serve as a transition for homeless families to find permanent housing and get on their feet. A recent city report found about 1,500 people were sleeping on San Diego's streets. The families moving into Golden Hall had been living in a bridge tent shelter at 14th and Commercial. That shelter is being removed to make way for a Father Joe's 14-story affordable housing tower. Golden Hall will have on-site residential staff and security 24 hours a day. Deacon Jim Vargas, president of Father Joe's Villages, said Golden Hall's location will present challenges when it comes to delivering key services out of Father Joe's main campus across downtown. He said these next few months will be a good test to see if something longer term could work. "I personally would love, in addition to the tent, to have some brick and mortar," said Vargas. "And if this facility works out well we'd be happy to continue as a service provider."The city is installing the new tent at 17th and Commercial over the next few months. It will cost about million, plus ,000 a month to rent the land. 1441

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly a week full of films by military veterans, focusing on a variety of topics is coming to San Diego this month. The GI Film Festival runs Sept. 24-29, bringing together a community of passionate filmmakers, the military veteran community, and those who support them to showcase works in cinema and educate and preserve the legacies of veterans.Festival organizers say their mission is to ensure that the stories of military veterans and their families are told and show future generations the triumphs and sacrifices they endure. The festival also works as a bridge, connection military and civilian populations together through cinema and mutual understanding. All of this works as a way to help veterans heals as well.Last year, the six-day film festival opened with a film starring George Takei, about a veteran who spent time in a Japanese-American internment camp, and also featured films by stars like actor Jeffrey Wright. This year, films focusing on the Afghanistan War, short documentaries, post-9/11, the Iraq War, and student and military veteran projects will be screened.Films will be screened at the Museum of Photographic Arts or UltraStar Cinemas at Hazard Center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Padres fans, long wired to protect themselves from seemingly inevitable heartbreak, are expressing optimism as a team that made the playoffs last season gets bolstered by a series of blockbuster trades.“Just having the opportunity to think about padres baseball in 2021 as one of the perennial teams that everyone is looking at, it’s new territory for all of us," said Padres fan Andy Bolin. “It made me feel special again to have friends across the country saying hey man, those Padres are great. We’re having so much fun watching them. It’s nice to be able to brag for once," said fellow fan Mike Hernandez. In 2020, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each were among the top contenders for the MVP award and pitcher Dinelson Lamet was in the running for the CY Young Award as the best pitcher in the National League. While the team ultimately was eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual World Series champion, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres have become a popular pick by baseball experts as the top candidate to knock the Dodgers off their thrown. And that was before the Padres reported acquisitions of ace pitchers Blake Snell and Yu Darvish."I really felt it was the best looking ball club that I’ve seen in my last 40 years, to be honest with you," Padres legend Randy Jones told ABC 10News about the 2020 team. Jones says he hopes the pandemic wanes enough for San Diego sports fans to return to the stadium at some point during the season. “It is fun to watch, and to see it in person down at Petco Park would be phenomenal for this fans. They’d just love it. They’d go nuts.” 1621

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Opening statements started Wednesday in the trial of a father accused of killing his two children in a fire at his Rancho Bernardo condo in 2017. Investigators said Henry Lopez passed out drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a fire that spread to the rest of the home. His children, 10-year-old Cristos and 7-year-old Isabella, died as a result of smoke inhalation. Lopez was also hospitalized with burns. Lopez’ ex-wife Nikia testified at his preliminary hearing in February 2018, saying the couple was in the custody of a divorce. Nikia Lopez also said her ex-spouse was an abusive alcoholic. RELATED: Mother opens up about children killed in fire"He drank a lot. My goal was to keep it from the kids. I would wake up in the middle of the night and throw away the bottles in the trash. I would pull him upstairs before the kids woke in the morning... sometimes I would have to clean up his throw up,” Nikia Lopez said in earlier testimony. Lopez faces up to 14 years in prison for several felony counts including involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. 1090
