SAN FRANCISCO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Apple Inc. announced on Tuesday that it has updated its iMac all-in-one desktop, adding Intel's next generation quad-core processors, Thunderbolt data ports and a new HD camera.Starting at 1,199 U.S. dollars, the new iMac is up to 70 percent faster and its new graphics deliver up to three times the performance of the previous generation, Apple said in a statement.The new iMac features quad-core Intel Core i5 processors with an upgrade option to Core i7 processors.The 21.5-inch model has a single Thunderbolt port while the 27- inch has two, in addition to four USB 2.0 inputs and a FireWire 800 port.Thunderbolt, which debuted with Apple's updated MacBook Pro notebooks in February, is also an Intel design bringing together high-speed data transfer and high-definition display onto a single cable. BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic air travelers, as well as international passengers in and out of China, will be the biggest boost to airline industry growth over the next four years, according to an industry outlook report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Monday.Of the world's expected 800 million new travelers by 2014, about 181 million new passengers will come from China's domestic air routes, while another 33 million will be passengers flying to or from China via international routes, IATA said.China's 181 million domestic air passengers growth will lift the country's domestic passenger throughput to 379 million by 2014, only behind the United States in the world's aviation traveler volume ranking, according to IATA.The United States will remain the largest single country market for domestic passengers, with 671 million domestic air travelers and international passengers by then, according to IATA's forecast.The world's air travelers will top 3.3 billion by 2014, up by 800 million from the 2.5 billion in 2009, while world air cargo will rise to 38 million tonnes from 26 million tonnes in 2009."The forecast indicates that the world will continue to become more mobile. This creates enormous opportunities but also presents some challenges," Giovanni Bisignani, IATA' s Director General and CEO, said in the outlook report."We will need even more efficient air traffic management, airport facilities and security programs," he said, adding the shadow of the global economic recession is expected to remain over parts of the industry for some time to come.He said lingering consumer debt, high unemployment and austerity measures will dampen growth rates in Europe and North America, shifting the industry's focus eastwards.By 2014, 1 billion people will travel by air in the Asia-Pacific region, accounting for 30 percent of the global total, up from 26 percent in 2009, he added.

BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) will vote on draft laws on vehicle and boat taxes at the end of its bimonthly sessions on Friday.The group is also expected to vote on protecting the nation's intangible cultural heritage and a draft amendment to the Criminal Law.The Chairperson's Council of the NPC Standing Committee adopted the decision at a Thursday meeting presided over by NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo.The three drafts will undergo further deliberation and revision based upon the opinion of the members of the NPC Standing Committee before the laws are put to a vote.Under the draft law on vehicle and vessel taxes, there will be a reduction in taxes for vehicles with engines smaller than 2.0 liters, which accounts for 87 percent of China's cars. Vehicle owners would also be required to submit tax certificates in order to qualify for a road-worthiness certificate.

ROME, May 26 (Xinhua) -- African swine fever, a viral disease deadly to pigs but harmless to human beings, is spreading beyond Russia and the Caucasus region into Europe, the United Nations' food agency said Thursday."African swine fever is fast becoming a global issue," said Juan Lubroth, chief veterinary officer for the Food and Agriculture Organization."It now poses an immediate threat to Europe and beyond. Countries need to be on the alert and to strengthen their preparedness and contingency plans," he said.The disease, for which there is currently no vaccine, was introduced into Georgia from southern Africa late in 2006. It entered through the Black Sea port of Poti, where garbage from a ship was taken to a dump where pigs came to feed, the FAO said.Strategies to tackle African swine fever include quarantine, on-farm security and other measures aimed at minimizing the risk of introduction and establishing of the disease.

HAIKOU, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's aviation authorities on Friday started to allow helicopters to fly in low-altitude airspace over the tourist island of Hainan on a trial basis for the first time. The aim is to eventually open a part of the country's tightly-controlled airspace to private aircraft.Four helicopters were manned by eight pilots from Shanghai-based Zhengyang Investment Group, a leading domestic firm in the general aviation industry. They are expected to conduct test flights in the sky, 1,000 meters above the ground in Hainan in the next two months.The flight test will collect data for low-altitude flying and test the ground control system's response to emergencies, said Zou Jianming, chairman of Zhengyang Investment Group.Hainan is the first place in China to conduct test flights of private aircraft in low-altitude airspace, said Jiang Sixian, deputy governor of the province. Domestic and foreign firms are both welcome to invest in Hainan's general aviation sector to develop world-class tourism here.China's low-altitude airspace is controlled by the Air Force and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Every private aircraft flight needs approval, and the procedure can take from one day up to a week.But last November, the State Council and the Central Military Commission said that part of the low-altitude airspace would be opened to promote the country's general aviation sector, including the purchase and use of private planes.General aviation refers to the part of the aviation industry that excludes flights for military, law enforcement and public transport. China has only 900 aircraft, 80 airports and fewer than 10,000 pilots in the general aviation segment.The market for general aviation in China is valued at only 13 billion yuan (1.98 billion U.S. dollars) but is expected to grow by 15 percent annually until 2020, Hainan aviation officials said.
