Bernard Johnson is well past retirement age, but he has a sales job in Washington D.C. where he works about 35 hours per week.“It allows me a lot of flexibility. I'm my own boss, I work strictly on a commission basis, which I control my own income,” he said.Johnson is part of the so-called “silver tsunami” in which more seniors are staying in the workforce longer, especially in large cities.“I enjoy working, and it also enhances my lifestyle,” Johnson said.Between 2014-2024, the government estimates the number of workers ages 65 to 74 will jump 55 percent, and those 75 and older will jump 85 percent. Many companies don’t want to lose the experience the older workers bring, says Nora Super with The Milken Institute.“When they walk out of the door, they tend to take many, many years of experience that is hard to replace right away,” Super says.More than 100 employers have signed AARP’s pledge to promote equal opportunity for all workers, regardless of age, and more of those companies are starting to offer incentives and more flexibility to get older workers to stay.“Because of their experience and what they have to offer, especially in mentoring and managing teams, companies are willing to make that exchange and say you don't have to work as much or as often or come into the office,” Super said. 1325

As Tropical Depression Imelda slowly makes its way through East Texas, some towns remain at a standstill as residents fear the rainfall will lead to flash flooding.John Clinton worried Wednesday that new flood doors he installed at his Galveston home would be put to test. He and his wife recently moved back into the home after it was heavily damaged during Hurricane Harvey in 2017."After an experience like that, every time you heard about harsh weather coming up from the tropics it's not a fun thing," Clinton told CNN.In parts of the Houston area, drivers became stranded when water filled the streets Wednesday. Many schools, government offices and businesses closed for the day but no major incidents were reported, city officials said.Imelda is threatening to bring more than 12 inches of rain to Houston by the time the storm ends -- which would be the highest amount for one storm since 910

Businesses are considering how they'll need to change up their restrooms amid the pandemic.“I do think that most people would agree in the past, even pre-COVID, public restrooms tended not to be the cleanest place in most public venues and this is a real concern given the way germs can be transmitted,” said Steven Soifer, a professor of social work at the University of Mississippi.Across the country, some businesses have been doing quick fixes like taping off sinks or urinals to encourage distancing. Others have been changing up how often the restroom gets cleaned.McDonald’s wants its franchisees to clean their restrooms every 30 minutes.Soifer, who’s also the president of the American Restroom Association, thinks having the cleanings documented would give us all better peace of mind.“A lot of these public bathrooms in the better places have these charts and they tell you the last time the bathroom was cleaned,” Soifer. “I think that should become standard practice. People know they're cleaning the bathroom every half hour, every hour, once a day.”Mcdonald’s is also asking its restaurant owners to put in foot pulls so people can open the restroom door without touching it, automatic paper towel dispensers and touchless sinks.Soifer is hoping these guidelines will set the standard for other businesses. The American Restroom Association advocates for single stall, enclosed private restrooms, like we see more of in Europe. But they acknowledge this would be a big expense for businesses.Cheaper, more immediate fixes they suggest are putting hand sanitizer in addition to soap by the sink or even in the stall. 1641
