Some eggs and embryos at a San Francisco fertility center may no longer be viable after a storage tank malfunction.The Pacific Fertility Center said a piece of equipment in its cyro-storage laboratory "lost liquid nitrogen for a brief period of time" on March 4.It is the second clinic to report a fault that weekend.In an unrelated event, more than 2,000 frozen eggs and embryos were also left compromised at the University Hospitals Fertility Clinic in Cleveland after a malfunction caused temperatures to drop in the freezers where they were stored.Viable tissue recoveredIn a statement, the Pacific Fertility Center said "viable tissue" had been recovered from the one tank affected and that "the vast majority of the eggs and embryos in the lab were unaffected."The equipment was immediately retired and the facility is now operating securely, according to the statement."As soon as the issue was discovered, our most senior embryologists took immediate action to transfer those tissues from the affected equipment to a new piece of equipment."The center said it had brought in independent experts to conduct a full investigation and was reaching out to its patients: "We are truly sorry this happened and for the anxiety that this will surely cause."The clinic's president, Carl Herbert, told the Washington Post that staff had spent days sorting through records to establish which patients had tissue inside the affected storage tank, before clinic doctors called them."Anger is a big part of the phone call," Herbert told the Post. It's her job to take care of kids who have severe infections. At Children's Hospital Of Orange County in Southern California, she's the one they call when things are significant, or out of the ordinary.“We are seeing a lot of kids that come in with prolonged fevers and elevated inflammatory markers there was a time when everyone was social distancing and staying at home that the census was low and we weren’t seeing the usual run of the mill infections.” Ashouri said.Now that things have "opened up" in California, as they have in many states across the nation, they're seeing more sick kids. And they're watching, testing and screening a lot of them.“MIS-C is a multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children that has been temporarily associated with the coronavirus outbreak and these kids tend to be sicker kids with significant inflammatory processes going on,” Ashouri said.The symptoms are persistent fevers, severe stomach pains, trouble breathing, chest pain and rashes. As kids get sick, they often have symptoms even if they're less severe. So, how do you typify and discern whether it's related to the coronavirus?“That’s something that we grapple with as well here because kids gets fevers and rashes and it’s common and not every rash and every fever will be coronavirus and not every rash or fever will be MIS-C for sure,” Ashouri said.They focus on the science and data, blood work, extensive evaluations, and screenings.“There’s a lot of information out there and you have to be careful about what you take in and listen to- kids are going to get fevers, they’re going to get rashes, not every rash and fever is going to be related to COVID,” Ashouri said.Which is why they're putting out as much information as they can. It illicits some sort of immune response, and you don't have to test positive for the virus at the time. It's likely from a prior COVID-19 infection, which then manifests into MIS-C. While most kids are doing well and have mild cases, if your child gets sick, it's important to see a doctor.“Kids who have the MIS-C are generally pretty sick and it’s important for them to be taken care of in a facility like CHOC - a children’s hospital where you have a multi-disciplinary group of people,” Ashouri said. 3022

A new city report says that the Solana Energy Alliance could run at a deficit for the next two years, which look to be more challenging than originally forecast. The city launched the alliance in June to help the city reach its goal of 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 and provide competition to SDG&E. Currently, more than 90 percent of Solana Beach energy and businesses buy their electricity from the alliance. It saves them about 2 percent from SDG&E. “They’re definitely stepping into deep water to try to do this themselves,” said Solana Beach resident Ed Radcliffe. “I hope they do it right.”Solana Beach City Councilman Peter Zahn said overall the energy program is healthy. It has high enrollment and is paying off expenses from the launch. He said it had higher revenues than expected while also having higher expenses than expected. Zahn said the report examined the alliance’s first three months, so it’s still early. He added a big hit came from a recent Public Utilities Commission decision to hike the exit fees residents pay SDG&E to buy it elsewhere.
