Then, there was the announcement kids would be returning to school online."We have this space that we're not gonna be utilizing because no one's having in-person conferences, we're all over zoom these days," turning the room into a classroom. "It's large enough to fit 3 or 4 kids and that's exactly the number of kids we have with our employees. We're going to have a little reading area where kids can switch places to relax and reset. All the things you can normally find in a classroom, a bookshelf with all the interests they might have." Elliott even went to great lengths, hiring an accredited teacher's assistance to help."It's definitely a relief. I know they were just thinking about homeschooling and working, trying to manage that. There's so many emotions involved and so much anxiety and stress, and my goal was to reduce that for our employees."Elliott has followed all CDC protocols and guidelines for her 15 employees working in office, and she'll do the same when their kids come fall."We're still getting the room set up because we want to ensure social distancing between the children and the teacher. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Military families told 10News they are without heating and A/C due to mold in their air ducts.The families live in Tierrasanta and say housing came into their homes mid-October.Nancy Irvin has lived in the same home for six years with her military husband, 2-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter.She said problems with the home started day one, "the upstairs was leaking down from the tub to the garage so all of our stuff that was in boxes was flooding.""It's been sickness after sickness, cold, bronchitis, double ear infections everything," Irvin explained her children have been sick since they moved in and doctors haven't been able to tell them what's wrong."He's been coughing until he throws up at night," Irvin said while holding her crying toddler, Easton. She said even the dog developed a rash. She blames mold in their home.Mid-October Irvin said housing came in, tested for mold, removed her vents an taped over the holes. She said the lack of heating is keeping her children awake at night.She said a cleaning company came in to work on the vents but she wants more, "housing is doing nothing, they're not talking to anyone, they're not giving any information and it's just stressful."Neighbors said they are dealing with the same issues, posting photos of black fluffy mold in the air vents.In September, 10News reported on the Charvat family, who won a -million lawsuit against Lincoln Military Housing, saying mold also made their family sick at their home near the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot.Their lawsuit is in the middle of the appeals process. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many Asian American business owners continue to struggle during the pandemic, but a North County teen is hoping to help by creating a website to support local restaurants."I was hearing a lot of stories about Asians in my community experiencing discrimination during the pandemic," said 17-year-old Kaia Culotta.The teen said coming from a family of small business owners, she wanted to do something to help."I realized that there wasn't an easily accessible, comprehensible list of Asian owned businesses in my community," said Culotta. "So, I saw a need for that."For weeks, Culotta learned how to code through free programs online to build a website. The "Help Asian Owned Businesses" site has an extensive list of restaurants located around the county.Culotta said her project sparked the interest of San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate. He even shared a video promoting the site on social media."It is awesome. It's such a neat thing to be doing out of the goodness of her heart," said Joe Kao, owner of R3fresh Juice Bar.After seeing Cate's video, the small business owner reached out to the teen to thank her for putting the site together.Kao said his business, like many others, had fewer customers during the pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Law enforcement agencies across San Diego County must comply with a new law designed to increase transparency of police misconduct.Senate Bill 1421 requires departments to release records of officer-involved shootings and major uses of force, officer dishonesty and confirmed cases of sexual assault to the public.Earlier this year several police associations in San Diego County sued to block the release of records, arguing Senate Bill 1421 doesn’t contain any express provision or language requiring retro-activity or any clear indication that the legislature intended the statue to operate retroactively.They claimed the bill eliminates the longstanding statutory confidentiality of specified peace officer or custodial officer personnel records.In March a judge ruled the bill applies retroactively to all personnel records of peace officers not only now but before January 1, 2019.The Judge ruled no records could be released before March 29 giving the unions time to appeal if they want. It does not appear any have appealed.Some agencies tell 10News they plan to start releasing records this week.10News is still waiting to hear from other local agencies about when they are planning to release records. 1238

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday activist groups rallied at events throughout the day with the same message, more needs to be done to stop police brutality."My son was not killed he was murdered," Richard Abuka's son, Alfred Olango, was shot and killed by police in El Cajon back in 2016.Monday morning he stood on the steps of the Hall of Justice with other activists dredging up tragedy, compelling people to hear their message that new policies to hold police accountable need to be put in place. They held a banner with the names of those lost at the hands of law enforcement throughout the county."I've been pulled over numerous times, ripped out of my car, my car searched just because I'm driving with tattoos," a former convict by the nickname "Flaco" said at the Teach-In event held at San Diego City College.The events all supporting the National Day of Actions to Stop Police Brutality."We don't need cops," panelists spoke on ways to find a solution."I do work with the police and the DAs department in training their officers, and I help run a restorative justice program that's city wide and I'm expanding it to county wide," Aeiramique Blake said.
