ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs died Monday at the age of 27, stunning Major League Baseball and leading to the postponement of the team's game against the Texas Rangers.Skaggs was with the team in Texas when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room. The Angels reacquired him in December 2013, and he has won 25 games over five seasons with the club.Skaggs started a career-high 24 games last season, going 8-10 with a 4.02 ERA. He missed playing time in April this season with a sprained ankle, but came back strong.Skaggs was part of the same Angels draft class as Mike Trout, and they were roommates in the low minor leagues before Skaggs was traded to Arizona. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the authorization of a brand new rapid COVID-19 test that people can take themselves at home."I think that it’s better to have a faster test than a slower one. People tend to abide by the public health recommendation to self-isolate if they have actual data in a reliable timeframe. The danger is that we’re asking people to do this at home. It's not in a controlled setting like a laboratory," says Dr. Amber Schmidtke, a public health microbiologist.Dr. Schmidtke says there are still questions about how this new rapid at-home test will be interpreted by health officials."I actually don't expect them to report it. I would be surprised. You know, most people don't report a home pregnancy test to our Department of Public Health, for example. But I think this is going to be treated much in the same way as a home pregnancy test. You know, if you call your doctor and say, 'I tested positive at home,' they're going to repeat that test as soon as you come in," says Dr. Schmidtke.The test, which a doctor will have to prescribe, will provide valuable information to people, as long as it is administered correctly."What if they don't do it very well? You have to put it in your nose and rub it around both nares. You have to put it in, swirl it around 15 times. You have to let it sit there for 30 seconds. You have to know which button to read. There's lots of things that can go wrong and so if the test is misunderstood and you don't have a professional looking over your shoulder, it could result in some unfortunate things," says Dr. Stuart Ray, a professor at Johns Hopkins University and infectious disease expert.Dr. Ray hopes people will use the test correctly so that it really does help prevent COVID-19 transmission in the community."What if they use that to decide that they're now negative after exposure so therefore it's safe to go out before their isolation or quarantine ends. And the problem is, they're still in the incubation period so the test is negative but in fact they’re infected," says Dr. Ray.Dr. Ray says it will take time to understand how the test works, but it's exciting to have a new tool for the general public to use. 2340

Eric Greitens' legal and political woes deepen, some White House officials are inquiring whether the controversy could also envelop the governor's former top campaign adviser, Nick Ayers, who is now Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff.Multiple officials in President Donald Trump's administration have privately put out feelers with Missouri Republican leaders in recent days to gauge whether Ayers would be interviewed as part of the state House committee investigation into Greitens, according to two sources familiar with the conversations.Ayers signed on with Greitens in 2015, but it is unclear exactly when the two men severed ties. Greitens' campaign fund has continued to pay the firm Ayers founded, C5 Consulting, into 2018, according to a Missouri Ethics Commission filing. Ayers stepped away from the firm to work in the administration."Several people from Washington have reached out and asked if Nick Ayers is going to be subpoenaed," said one Missouri House source with knowledge the discussions. "To this point he has not been." But the President's allies were also informed that a possible subpoena "is very much in play" because the committee's investigation is ongoing, added a separate source who also confirmed the conversations.The questions from White House officials were interpreted by those on the receiving end as oriented toward fact-finding, not as an attempt by the administration to influence the state House committee's work.Ayers and a spokesperson for Pence declined to comment.The state House probe, which is running parallel to investigations by Attorney General Josh Hawley and St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, made headlines this month with the release of a bombshell report detailing alleged sexual misconduct and assault by the governor against a woman with whom he has admitted having an affair.Greitens has denied committing any crime and instead called the situation "a personal mistake" from his time prior to taking office."As I have said before, I made a personal mistake before I was Governor. An irate homeowner in Louisiana who armed himself with a handgun and chased down a group of teenagers after they rolled his house is behind bars for aggravated assault.The armed confrontation came in response to what Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker said was the group of teens “yearly ritual of ‘rolling or toilet papering’ of homes of fellow students” in the early morning hours of October 27.Craig Scott apparently didn’t think it was funny.Scott armed himself with a semiautomatic handgun and chased down the group of teens, according to Sticker.After he caught up to the group in another section of the neighborhood, Scott pulled his vehicle across the road to block their exit, got out, and confronted the teens with his handgun.Scott was arrested on November 2 and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and obstruction of a roadway.“Though he had ample opportunity, Mr. Scott never once called 911 or requested police assistance,” Sticker said. “The end clearly did not justify the means this situation.”The teens still may face charges, since “rolling” a house is technically considered criminal mischief, according to Sticker. 1163
