Companies can stop collecting employees’ payroll taxes starting Tuesday, September 1, after an executive order in early August gave workers a tax holiday.The deferral of payroll taxes applies to employees making less than 4,000 a year. Employees are taxed 6.2 percent that goes toward the Social Security Trust Fund and another 1.45 percent for Medicare.It’s a deferral because the payroll taxes are still due to the IRS by April 30, 2021, which they made clear in new guidance released last week with the US Treasury Department.What this means to employees: It depends on your employer. Starting September 1, employers can stop withholding taxes, but many business leaders have said they will not since the taxes will eventually be due. The decision is up to each company and is not required.If a company stops withholding payroll taxes, employees will have more money in their paychecks through the end of the year. Then on January 1, companies will need to withhold more from paychecks to collect all that is owed in April 2021.For employees making ,000 a year, the elimination of Social Security taxes would result in an extra per paycheck every two weeks. Assuming the employee has eight paychecks left in 2020, that would result in 2 in taxes deferred in 2020, which would be repaid in 2021. For employees making ,000 per year, those figures would be doubled.If an employee leaves their job before all of the appropriate taxes are collected, the guidance only states that companies can "make arrangements to otherwise collect the total applicable taxes from the employee."President Trump has stated he would “terminate” the tax if he was elected in November. (KGTV) -- A driver was detained late Tuesday evening after military officials said he tried to enter Naval Base Coronado property without authorization.The incident occurred at around 10:15 p.m. at the Stockdale Boulevard gate at Naval Air Station North Island, near Third Street and Alameda Boulevard.Kevin Dixon, with Naval Base Coronado Public Affairs, said a vehicle tried to enter the base but was stopped by barriers.Dixon confirmed the driver was detained, but no other information on the incident was released.The investigation forced the closure of the gate for several hours.There were no reported injuries to any military personnel. 668

College enrollment is dropping sharply among high school seniors.A new report finds the number of students who immediately went on to college this year fell by nearly 22% on average.Breaking that down by area, under-served communities have been hit hardest, nearly a 30% drop for low-income high schools and 33% for high poverty high schools.The National College Attainment Network funded the research. You can also reach out to institutions you previously applied to but felt like you couldn't go to. Talk to the financial aid office about how your circumstances have changed.“This is all about making it an open conversation and reaching out to those supports and telling them you'd like to enroll and asking them to help you make that happen and what kind of options you have now,” said Cook.The data suggests that declining college enrollment will not only continue, but possibly get worse next fall.This time of year, current seniors should be focusing on keeping grades up and writing essays for applications. 1897

CINCINNATI — "The NRA is a terrorist organization.”Mad Dog PAC, a Maryland-based political action committee, paid to put messages like this one on billboards all over the country, including over northbound Interstate 75 in Middletown. Their installations, which include an "Impeachment Now" sign near President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and 14 other National Rifle Association-centric billboards across the country, are splashy, provocative and to-the-point, calling for regulation of the NRA and the removal of various "Treasonweasel" Republican politicians.PAC chair Claude Taylor said the messages are as severe as they need to be."We think the NRA is acting very much like a terrorist organization," he said.
