SHANGHAI, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang called for more efforts to accelerate China's urbanization Thursday, as part of the government's efforts to promote economic restructuring and expand domestic demand during this process.Li made the remarks at a training course in Shanghai, saying China's urbanization, which still has much room for expansion, is China's largest source of domestic demand as well as the largest potential driver for development.Further, urbanization would bolster domestic demand, improve people's livelihoods and solve rural problems, Li said.Li noted that China would coordinate development among cities and towns, and step up development of cities in China's central and western regions, while prioritizing development in eastern cities.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (6th L, front) poses for a group photo with the participants of a training course on urbanization, in Shanghai, east China, June 24, 2010. Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Iran have observer status.From Tashkent, Hu travelled to Astana for his second visit to Kazakhstan in six months. He paid a working visit to the Central Asian country last December.In Astana, Hu and his Kazakh counterpart, Nursultan Nazarbayev, discussed ways to advance the China-Kazakhstan relations and enhance pragmatic cooperation. They also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.Political analysts say Hu's Central Asia trip is conducive to promoting the SCO's sustained, healthy and stable development and strengthening China's ties with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) said Monday it would work to help 1 million job-seekers find jobs this year, as well as provide vocational training for an additional 1 million people.Also, the ACFTU will provide training and job opportunities for 200,000 housekeeping workers this year, said Li Shouzhen, spokesperson with the ACFTU, at a meeting of the national union's executive committee.The ACFTU has launched a five-year campaign of vocational training to help improve the skills of workers, Li said.The ACFTU has been working to protect migrant workers' rights and recovered 2.5 billion yuan (366.03 million U.S. dollars) of defaulted salaries for migrant workers in the first half of the year, Li said.The national union, founded on May 1, 1925, had a membership of 169.94 million, with migrant workers accounting for 24.1 percent of the total, in 2007.ACFTU chairman Wang Zhaoguo said at the meeting that trade unions at various levels should work to protect employee rights to ensure stability.The meeting stressed the importance of the collective wage negotiation system and seeks to implement its use in wage discussions between businesses with trade unions by 2012.

  

CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. The water level of Beibei section of Jianglingjiang River rose to 197.76 meters, 3.26 meters higher than the alarm line.All 12,000 residents - 7,000 from Chongqing and 5,000 from neighboring Sichuan Province - have been evacuated to higher ground, flood control authorities in the two regions said.The rising waters may flood the upper reaches of the river while any potential dam breach would bring fatal floods downstream.Continuous downpours and poor road conditions have hindered work teams and experts getting near the site, stymying efforts to deal with the barrier lake, said Chengkou County's flood control office.
