Often, we're working longer days because we're getting distracted while we're at home.“Everything's getting pretty mushy, so what that looks like is Netflix might be happening at 2 o’clock in the afternoon or you might be doing laundry at 11, instead of being fully focused on your work during the day, and I do think that is creating working longer hours,” said Elizabeth Grace Saunders, a time management coach.Saunders says there are additional distractions now.For instance, if you're a parent, your child may be learning from home. Sometimes you need to step in to help them, which can take time away from your work. That's completely okay, as long as we're still managing our time efficiently.Another thing that's changed is we may not necessarily have something to look forward to after work.Happy hours and going to the movie theater with a friend aren't really happening, so we may feel less motivated to work throughout the day.These longer work hours are giving us less of a chance to recharge for the next day, so it's important that we draw the line between work life and home life.Saunders says to pick a time where you only work... And don't do things like personal chores or take long breaks.“Those work hours are times when I’m devoted to work, and I’m really focused, and I’m not getting other things. That gives you the freedom and flexibility to feel like, I got work done today, I got done what I needed to get done and I need to do something refreshing or recharging at night.”We can still create things to look forward to after work, like having a time where we call friends and family, or plan to do something else you enjoy like crafting. 2204
In a small town in Utah, life moves at a slower pace, and social distancing there is easy.“I think it’s quiet,” said Kelton Wells. “I think it’s a beautiful valley and I just love it up here.”Wells owns Keystone Cabinets, where he employs 12 people, including Ned Miller.“I’ve lived here in the valley my whole life,” said Miller. “It’s fun because I can create what I consider works of art.”In a flurry of dust and noise, solid pieces of wood transform, all while people keep their distance.“We have a little bit better spacing here. We don’t have the close shoulder-to-shoulder contact that somebody would over there, Miller said as he motioned with his hand towards JBS Beef Plant.“I feel bad for the people who work there.”Meatpacking may be a world away from cabinetry, but in terms of distance, they are practically neighbors.In June, COVID-19 swept through the facility, infecting nearly 300 of its workers, but the facility stayed open.“Nobody was running around in panic, throwing picket signs up and wanting everybody to put a ‘C’ on their forehead down at the plant,” Miller said with a smile. “I didn’t get that type of a feeling for it.”They still don’t.“What comes will come and we’ll take it as it goes, I guess,” Well said with a shrug of the shoulders. “I don’t think a lot of people were super alarmed by it.”In a town where everyone knows someone who works at the facility, there is a feeling of “life must go on.”“I mean, we all got to survive. Our work has to get done so we do what we can to keep it going and keep people happy,” Wells said.The CDC set up shop for weeks at the health department, making sure people in this community stayed safe and JBS stayed open.“We’ve got a good plan going with JBS,” Josh Greer, with Bear River Health Department, said. “(JBS) has got great controls in place.”The people in Hyrum, Utah are not alone.JBS has had outbreaks at plants in Colorado, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas and Wisconsin.“I think people are just trying to do the best they can,” Wells said.In Hyrum, the work will go on, whether it is with meat or with wood.In a place where people come to escape the noise of city life, it is hard to escape the question on everyone’s minds.“When will we return to normal and what is the new normal going to be?” Miller asked. 2304

Waffle House is collaborating with a brewing company in Georgia to produce a bacon-infused beer called Waffle House Bacon & Kegs.According to the Oconee Brewing Company, the beer is a 6.5 percent ABV red ale that will be available beginning Dec. 18 in a six-pack or on draft exclusively at the brewing company."The beloved scent of bacon stands out from the typical medium hop aroma of a red ale. The malty sweetness of the base beer blends perfectly with the salty, savory, and smokey bacon extract to create a delicious and unique beer," the brewery said on its website. If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of John Wood’s kitchen. The owner of 29 Diner has a big personality, but he might have a bigger heart.“We have the philosophy that we want to put the community first, always, but especially during the pandemic,” said Wood.While many restaurants have been trying to figure out how to serve takeout and keep the lights on, Wood and his team have been trying to figure out how to feed people in need.“We decided that we were going to turn our restaurant into a free food pantry and a free food kitchen,” said Wood.It started as a way to feed kids who wouldn’t be getting meals at schools anymore during the pandemic, but the 29 Diner team saw the need was greater.“We knew that we needed to do more than just feed the kids. So we decided to not only provide hot meals but we needed to open a community pantry as well,” said Wood.29 Diner has been a staple in Fairfax, Virginia, for a long time.“We love the service. It’s so friendly and being part of the community, it feels so natural,” said Melissa Schous, a customer who stopped in for lunch.Wood has been providing free meals and groceries to whoever needs them since the pandemic hit.“The diner became a seven-day-a-week, 12-hour-a-day free food pantry, free food kitchen, feeding thousands of meals daily. We had cars that wrapped around the diner feeding 60 to 80 families a day,” said Wood.The diner takes donations online, or in person with donation jars all around the diner. They use that money to buy the food they give away.While there wasn’t anyone coming in to grab food today, the diner converted their food truck into a mobile food pantry to deliver food throughout the community.Wood's willingness to help others in need is benefiting his business in other ways.And while Wood is willing to do what he takes to give his community a hand up, it’s having other benefits for his business.“Expanded our hours of operation here, we hired additional folks. So we completely reversed the trends of the pandemic of the impact into a small business, because we were taking care of our community,” said Wood.That’s right, 29 Diner is hiring, in this economy!Wood wouldn’t say he exact numbers, but said before the pandemic, he had enough cash to last a few months if business took a turn. Since his efforts to feed Fairfax, he’s seen that pile increase which he says he wants to use to keep feeding families.“We believe that if we touch you in the heart, if you believe in our community, you’ll want to come in and give us your money. You’re going to want to come in and patronize our business because of our goodwill to the community,” said Wood.And if you’re they’re for the good will, you might want to try the food too.“You walk in, they greet you like you’ve been there before and the food just feels like your aunt cooked it,” said Schous.Nothing like a hot meal to fill your belly, and maybe your heart too. 2916
In a scene reminiscent to what played out in Minneapolis on Memorial Day, Oklahoma City Police released video of a May 2019 incident of a man dying while in police custody.Body worn camera video was released to the public this week.The video shows as officers attempted to place him in handcuffs, Derrick Scott told officers multiple times “I can’t breathe,” a line that George Floyd used moments before he died in Minneapolis. One of the officers responded to Scott, “I don’t care.”The video shows officers struggling to place Scott in handcuffs.Unlike in the Floyd incident, the only video available from last May’s incident was from body camera footage.The May 2019 incident began on a call of a black man carrying a gun. After police arrived, officers talked to Scott. The body cam footage then showed officers chasing a fleeing Scott.Officers caught up to him and tackled Scott. Two officers straddled Scott until a third officer arrived and told Scott to stop resisting.It took all three officers to bring Scott into custody. An officer continued to hold a knee against Scott’s leg.Scott then didn’t say anything for four minutes, which prompted officers to call for EMTs. Scott died an hour later. An official autopsy stated that Scott had a collapsed lung at the time of his death, but did not give the manner for his death.The officers were cleared of wrongdoing. 1380
