The smell has finally started to fade inside Salazar's place, and they can begin renovations.But there's something else that's made Harvey--and losing his apartment-- that much tougher for Salazar."When I came in here, I just started crying, like I was hurt. This is my house, the place I shared with my mom."Salazar shared the cozy one bedroom with his mother up until her death just over a year ago. She had Leukemia, and for a while it had appeared she'd beaten it, thanks to Salazar; he was the bone marrow donor."And then the cancer came back."She died soon after."I mean, I never really lived on my own until this past past year. It was difficult the first couple of months, and it still is."It was so hard in fact that Salazar had to put most of what reminded him of her--family photographs on the walls and tables--and hide them on the top shelf of his closet. "There was just a lot of memories there, and I just felt depressed every time I saw them."But heading home to take stock in what stayed dry, Salazar takes down the boxes of photos--some of his mother's most cherished possessions, now his, too. Harvey, he says, is his turning point. He's quick to stress that he'll always be thinking about her, but no longer will he feel the need to dwell on his mother's death."This flood is actually--it's kind of a good thing because, you know, I can rebuild and make the apartment my place and my home," he said, welling up with emotion. In advance of hurricane season, Florida Power and Light is reviewing plans to make sure power is restored quickly after a storm. This week the company is holding its annual storm drill, simulating a Category 3 hurricane. During the drill, the company says it is incorporating lessons learned from Hurricane Irma, which knocked out power to 6.7 million electrical customers, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).EIA reports the rate of electric service restoration following Hurricane Irma was faster than Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Five days after Irma’s landfall, the share of customers without power had fallen from a peak of 64 percent down to 18 percent -- a recovery rate of about 9 percent of customers per day.Power outages during Wilma declined from 36 percent of customers to 16 percent by the fifth day after landfall. This is an average recovery rate of about 4 percent of customers per day. FPL credits the improvement to money spent on infrastructure improvements. Since 2006, more than 860 main power lines were hardened; within the next five to seven years FPL wants to harden all of them.Strengthened power lines perform approximately 40 percent better than non-strengthened lines, FPL said.This year, FPL plans to undertake the following additional initiatives to improve the reliabilityof service: 1416

In a new effort to tackle the deadly opioid addiction crisis in the US, pharmacy giant CVS announced on Friday it will limit opioid prescriptions to seven days for certain conditions. This restriction will apply to patients who are new to pain therapy.The new pharmacy program will also limit the daily dosage of pain pills based on their strength and will require use of immediate-release formulations before extended release opioids -- intended for severe, long-term pain treatment -- are dispensed.The changes will roll out on February 1, 2018 and cover all commercial, health plan, employer and Medicaid clients.CVS, which manages medications for nearly 90 million plan members, is one of the largest pharmaceutical chains in the US, with approximately 9,600 CVS Pharmacy stores and more than 1,100 walk-in medical clinics."With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we see firsthand the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse," said Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Health.From 1999 to 2014, sales of prescription opioids in the US almost quadrupled, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, yet there has been no change in pain reported by Americans.CVS said its pharmacists will also counsel patients with opioid prescriptions about the risk of dependence and addiction based on CDC guidelines. These educational sessions will also emphasize the importance of keeping medications secure in the home and proper disposal of unused medication.To help patients wanting to follow these guidelines, the company will almost double the number of drug disposal units in its Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program from 800 to 1,550 kiosks.
