The American Bald Eagle, a federally protected bird once considered endangered, is facing a new threat.Conservationists say the birds are being poisoned, and the number of cases are rising — and some worry the problem will not slow down.Last year, the U.S. Department of Interior lifted a ban on hunting with lead bullets on wildlife refuges. However, it's still illegal to use lead ammo to hunt waterfowl. Many hunters say they use lead ammunition because it is heavier than steel or copper, meaning the bullet reaches the target more accurately. Lead ammo is also cheaper than steel or copper.Betsy Finch is the manager of the Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery, which holds dozens of birds of all kinds that need help until they are well enough to be freed or put to rest. She can easily tell when an eagle has lead poisoning."Inability to stand, convulsions, head tremors, difficulty breathing, gastrointestinal distress — because lead paralyzes the gut, so they can't digest food, dehydration," Finch said. The start of 2018 has been hard for Finch, putting her time and energy into sometimes a losing effort."Because there are others that need our help," she said. While she hopes hunters will think twice before firing off their rifles with lead bullets, she doesn't blame all hunters for the rising amounts of lead poisoning. Finch says it's often the hunter who are are the ones who find the sick eagles and bring them to the recovery center. 1490

That leased car gathering dust in your driveway might have hidden cash in it.Dealers facing tight inventories are scrambling to buy good used cars to resell. They might be willing to purchase your leased car for more than the buyout price in your contract.“I haven’t seen used car prices go up this much in years,” says Oren Weintraub, president of car concierge service Authority Auto. “We are seeing a large percentage or leases with equity in them.”With the pandemic reshaping the car business, experts recommend extracting that equity by selling the car outright, using it to offset the cost of returning the car or leveraging that value to make a better deal on your next car.Where does the equity come from?Your lease payment is based on the residual value of your vehicle. This is a prediction of the car’s value at the end of the lease which, because of the pandemic, is now often too low. This means you might be able to arrange to sell the car for the higher price, pay off the lease and then pocket the difference. It also means you could dodge over-mileage penalties or end the lease early. For example, Scot Hall of the lease-trading site Swapalease said his wife has been working from home during the pandemic and decided she didn’t need her leased 2017 GMC Yukon Denali XL. She ended her lease six months early — saving the remaining monthly payments — and sold her SUV to a local dealer, pocketing a check for ,500.Know where you standHere’s how to know if you have equity in your leased car:Find the residual value in your lease contract. This is the amount you can buy the car for at the end of the lease (there might also be a disposition fee for this transaction).Get today’s buyout price. If you want to end your lease early, call the lease holder and ask for a current buyout price. Hall says you can usually estimate this price by simply adding the total of all the remaining payments to the residual value.Look up the current market value. Use an online pricing guide, such as Edmunds.com, to find the trade-in value of your car, factoring in the current mileage, options and condition. If you’re thinking of selling your car to a neighbor, look for the private party price. Or you can get a nearly instant cash offer from a local dealer, Carmax or an online car retailer such as Carvana, Shift or Vroom. Give real-world offers more weight in your calculations.Do the math. Subtract the residual value from the current market price or cash offer. This is an estimate of how much equity you have in the car and how much money you could make on the deal.Find opportunity in a volatile marketOnce you know if you are in a positive equity position, you can explore different ways to use this potential value. Here are options to consider:Buy the car yourself. If you do this, you’re essentially getting a good used car at below-market price. Also, you know the history of your car, so there are no surprises. Many lenders that refinance auto loans also offer lease buyouts.Sell your leased car privately. In many states, you can buy the car and transfer it to a new owner within a certain number of days without paying sales tax yourself. Be sure to check with the DMV in your state before you make a deal.Trade in the car to a dealer. If you decide you want another car, you could sell your leased car outright first and then plunk down the cash on the new ride. But trading it in could save you a considerable amount of sales tax.Sell your vehicle to an online service or a local dealer. Carvana, Shift and Vroom will pick up the vehicle and do all the paperwork. However, Carvana says it will not accept leased cars as trade-ins.Return your lease without penaltiesKnowing there is equity in your car puts you in a stronger position when you return your leased vehicle. For example, Weintraub had a client who was ready to return a leased car with excess mileage and minor body damage. Because of the equity in the vehicle, Weintraub convinced the dealer to waive the 0 disposition fee, the excess mileage penalty and wear and tear charges.Should you be facing those kinds of costs as the end of your lease approaches, the time spent getting buyout offers is not only a bargaining tool, but it also offers other options to try if the leasing company doesn’t play ball.More From NerdWalletClass of 2019 Borrowed Less, Report FindsHow to Handle College Loan Debt as an Unemployed Recent GradMore Grads Are Going Back to School: Should You?Philip Reed is a writer at NerdWallet. Stormy Daniels' extensive interview with Anderson Cooper where the porn star discussed details of her relationship with now President Donald Trump is drawing mixed reactions from those in the adult industry. While Daniels told Cooper she was speaking out to defend herself against claims she is a liar or only in it for the money, others thought she had other motives.RELATED: Viewers, critics weigh in on Stormy Daniels interview"Of course this 0,000 is nothing compared to what she is going to get from these news agencies and her strip club appearances," brothel owner Dennis Hof said of Daniels' interview. The owner of the Love Ranch said he knows Daniels from crossing paths on red carpets but said he has never really cared for her.RELATED: Stormy Daniels says she was threatened in a Las Vegas parking lotHe's also made no secret that he is a big supporter of President Trump."Stormy Daniels got something out of having sex with Donald Trump. Is it bragging rights? She said she didn't get paid, I don't believe it. What is it?" But keep your mouth shut," Hof said. But not everyone in Las Vegas who knows Daniels is as adamant about the interview. Those who met and worked with Daniels when she made an appearance at the Sapphire Gentlemen's Club said she was "very polite."Some went on to say they couldn't speak about such a personal thing on a nationally televised program. "I don't know if I could go on camera and talk about a personal incident like that," Natalie Tejeda said. The White House said the president denies all of the claims being made by Daniels. More than 20 million people tuned in to watch those claims, but the White House will not say whether the president was one of them.Daniels' attorney told Good Morning America that his client has a "litany of more evidence" to back her allegation.   1894
