GUANGZHOU: Zhuhai in Guangdong Province and the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) are under threat from a serious saltwater tide that is likely to worsen over the next two months, the provincial water resource department said Thursday.The saltwater tide arrived in Zhuhai in the first half of November, earlier than the usual saltwater tide season from December to February.Last month, the city's main water source, Pinggang Water Pumping Station, was rendered incapable of pumping qualified fresh water for 171 hours. This seriously affected Zhuhai people's daily lives, and the impact extended throughout the Pearl River Delta.Currently, the whole city has stores of 25 million cu m of fresh water, 7 million cu m less than the same period last year.Director of the Guangdong provincial water resource department Huang Boqing said the department and other relevant organizations would do their best to control the saltwater tides and increase the amount of fresh water.Huang said construction of hydropower stations in the upper reaches of Xijiang and Beijang rivers - two tributaries of the Pearl River - should be slowed down, because they would block a large amount of fresh water and worsen saltwater tides in the river's lower reaches.Other provinces in the river's upper reaches diverted about 10 million cu m of fresh water to Zhuhai from November 20 to December 4.In addition, Zhuhai would complete a large reservoir by next October, and construction of another would begin next year and finish in 2010.However, many individuals are dredging river sands from the Pearl River Delta for profits, causing the riverbed to lower."The riverbed of Beijiang River is 30 percent lower than two decades ago," He Zhibo, a senior engineer of Zhujiang (Pearl River) water resource commission, told China Daily Thursday.The lowered riverbed cannot buffer saltwater tides. And if the river sand dredging continues, all government efforts to stem the tides would be wasted, he said.

A pair of young giant pandas will soon call Adelaide Zoo in South Australia home.The couple will be the first pandas to settle down in the southern hemisphere - the last time the endangered species were seen was nearly two decades ago during a visit to the Australasian region .President Hu Jintao and Australian Prime Minister John Howard signed an agreement yesterday formalizing the 10-year loan in Sydney.Hu said the move is a friendly gesture and the pandas will become a symbol of friendship.Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said after the signing ceremony that he played a key role in working with the Chinese to borrow the pandas as part of a global survival program."I love animals and I think the giant panda is one of the truly great animals of the world," said Downer.A native of Adelaide, Downer was excited that China agreed to send the pandas to the zoo where his grandfather was once the chief.It is hoped that the two-year-old male "Wang Wang", or "Net" and one-year-old "Funi", or "Lucky Girl", will breed when they reach sexual maturity.The two pandas are from the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province and they were named by the public earlier this year, said Zhang Guiquan, a director at the reserve.Chris West, CEO of the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia, said that the pair's presence in Australia will signify international collaboration to secure a future for wildlife."We will send our staff to Wolong to receive training," West said. "Our staff will also visit the giant panda facilities at San Diego Zoo, where they have successfully bred and managed giant pandas, and the climate is similar to that in South Australia."The giant panda is unique to China and often serves as an unofficial national mascot. The animals were sent abroad as a sign of warm diplomatic relations or to mark breakthroughs in ties.In a related development, two giant pandas "Bing Xing", 7, and "Hua Zui Ba", 4, are scheduled to leave China today for a 10-year sojourn in Spain.Giant pandas are among the world's most endangered species. SHENZHEN -- China on Wednesday laid out a primary plan for its second pipeline of the West-East natural gas transmission project.According to the plan, construction of the 8,794 kilometer gas pipeline, which consists of one major line and eight sub-lines, will involve an investment of approximately 143.5 billion yuan (US.8 billion).The major line will extend 4,945 km, running from Khorgos in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to Guangzhou, capital of south Guangdong Province.Construction of the pipeline will begin this year and it will go into operation in 2010. The pipeline would pass through 13 Chinese regions.It would carry natural gas from central Asian countries and Xinjiang to the economically prosperous but energy thirsty eastern and southern China areas, including Shanghai and Guangdong Province.

A regular inspection last month by the Ministry of Agriculture showed that food quality in 37 major cities has improved after a four-month promotional campaign, the ministry said on Friday.The nationwide inspection of vegetables, pork and aquatic products found acceptance rates had risen since August when the campaign was launched.The inspection found that:- 95.3 percent of the country's vegetables were safe in terms of pesticide residues.- 98.4 percent of meat products were up to scratch with regard to residues of clenobuterol hydrochloride, a drug some farmers used to put in pig feed but which is now banned due to the damage it can cause to the human heart.- 99.8 percent of aquatic products were free of chloramphenicol, and 95.7 percent were free from malachite green, both of which are banned fish food supplements.- No pork products in Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai and 25 other cities were polluted with banned drugs.- Aquatic products in seven cities including Beijing, Tianjin and Guangzhou were also found to be safe from illegal drugs.The ministry, which carries out five regular food safety inspections a year, attributed the achievements to its four-month campaign.It said in a news release that all 676 agricultural wholesale markets in large and medium cities have now been put under surveillance, up from 479 in September.Five kinds of pesticides that the ministry banned for their high toxicity have been seized and destroyed.The ministry also issued six regulations on pesticide registry management to standardize labeling and control product quantities."Thanks to the campaign, public awareness of agricultural product quality and food safety has been strengthened," the news release said.The ministry said it will follow up the campaign by cracking down on fake agricultural supplies and develop a network that gives farmers access to authentic and good-quality agricultural materials.
