A California university is using testing and contact tracing to stop a large outbreak of Covid-19 among fraternity houses, according to media reports. The University of Southern California has reported at least 150 positive coronavirus cases. Los Angeles-area media reports that dozens of those cases were traced to three or four fraternities near campus. The fraternity houses are off-campus, and it is not clear if the infected people were fraternity members or just students renting a room for the summer.Dr. Sarah Van Orman, chief health officer of USC Student Health, does not believe the students got Covid-19 from a party."And because people live in close proximity, they sort of spread it to each other," Van Orman told ABC7. "It was not large fraternity parties, they were small gatherings, but unfortunately, it was enough to allow it to spread to these communities."Van Orman said the number of cases at the university “dropped dramatically.” She said since the first report of cases on July 9, the university has used continued testing and contract tracing to identify exposed people. 1102

A growing number of countries are banning travelers from the United Kingdom after a new coronavirus variant was found there.A variant or mutation happens when the genetic structure of a virus changes and this is common. The variant first appeared in September. Health experts have found it is more infectious than the original virus.“Let me tell you what, there is no evidence of nor reason to believe, it is not any more lethal or any more dangerous than the normal coronavirus, no evidence to suggest that, no reason to believe it,” said Admiral Brett Giroir, Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).The variant has already been found in Australia, Denmark, South Africa and the Netherlands. Italy reports it has at least one patient infected with the mutation. While the U.K. works to control the new variant, several countries have banned flights coming from there, as well as countries where they've seen such infections.Despite the mutation, health officials remain adamant that it's important to get the COVID-19 vaccine.“There is also no evidence to suggest nor reason to believe that it would evade our vaccines that we have right now. Remember, our vaccines developed antibodies against multiple parts of that spiked protein, not just one that's the mutated one, so we are very encouraged about that,” said Giroir.A U.S. travel ban that began in March regarding the U.K. is still in place. 1449

A cyber security company is concerned with Amazon’s upcoming Prime Day shopping event.Check Point Research found a significant increase in the number of website domains registered using the words “Amazon” and “Prime.” More than a quarter are considered malicious, and one in ten suspicious.“The user may not realize it’s a fake website, because hackers usually do a really good job of imitating the look and feel of the website they're trying to come off as,” said Maya Levine, security expert at Check Point.Check Point says look for the little "lock" icon next to a website's address and also check for the additional letter “s” after “http.” Those both indicate a reliable site.“This is just something that is making the website a little more secure, so if you're seeing http without the s, that means you're missing that added layer of encryption, that added layer of security,” said Levine.Don't overshare online. You should never have to enter your birthday or social security number to buy something. You should also avoid public Wi-Fi when shopping and reset your Amazon password before you shop Prime Day sales.“If your password for one account got leaked and it’s the same one as your Amazon account, a hacker can take that and test it out,” said Levine. Also be leery of emails or texts about Amazon Prime Day or any events in general. Links often take you to malicious sites. It’s always best to open the app or go to the website yourself. 1458

A judge has decided a university was justified in moving an event by conservative commentator Ben Shapiro to a smaller venue for safety concerns, according to reports.Shapiro, a lawyer, former Breitbart editor and author of several books, was scheduled to speak at the University of Minnesota in February 2018.The group that requested Shapiro’s appearance, Students for a Conversative Voice, requested the use of a large, 1,000+ seat venue on the Minneapolis campus. However, University officials at the time decided the event needed to be held at a venue on the St. Paul campus that seats less than 500 people because of security concerns. The student group claimed in their lawsuit against the university the venue change resulted in limiting the number of people who could attend and denying them the ability to participate in the event.A judge on Friday threw out the lawsuit, according to the Pioneer Press, saying the university had legitimate safety concerns because of other incidents after Shapiro events on other campuses.Large crowds of protesters have appeared at Shapiro events, some resulting in arrests. At a September 2017 event in Berkeley, California, part of the area around campus was closed down and barriers erected to handle demonstrators; several people were arrested during the incident. The University of Minnesota reportedly spent ,000 on security for their event in February 2018. 1417
