Seventeen days after voters went to the polls in Ohio's 12th congressional district, Republican Troy Balderson hung on by a 1,680-vote margin to win the seat over insurgent Democrat Danny O'Connor.The seat, previously held by Pat Tiberi, and before that current Ohio Gov. John Kasich, has been held by Republicans since 1983. The district has not seen a competitive race since then, as both Kasich and Tiberi typically won every two years by comfortable margins. But the district, which includes parts of Columbus' affluent northern suburbs, rapidly urbanizing Delaware County to Columbus' north, as well as several surrounding rural counties, became competitive after Tiberi announced his retirement. Polls leading up to the Aug. 7 battle showed a dead heat. On election night, Balderson held a nearly 1,500-vote advantage. O'Connor announced that he would wait on all absentee and provisional ballots to be counted before conceding. All of those votes have now been counted as of Friday. “I just called Troy Balderson to congratulate him on his victory in the 12th Congressional district special election," O'Connor said in a statement. "I want to express my deepest thanks to my campaign staff, our volunteers, and to everyone who cast a vote in the special election, whether it was for me or not."Balderson also issued a response on Friday. "Danny O'Connor ran a hard-fought race," he said, "but I look forward to earning the support of voters for a fourth time in November as I share my track record of getting things done for Ohioans."While both were gracious to each other on Friday, the affinity for each other will almost certainly be short lived. Both O'Connor and Balderson also are on the ballot in November. And with control of the House of Representatives hanging in the balance in November, there is no reason to believe that either candidate will let up on the attacks on each other from the special election. Democrats will need to gain 25 seats in order to flip the House for the first time since 2010. According to Cook Political Report, there are 30 toss-up seats up for grabs, with 28 of them currently being held by Republicans. (KGTV) -- A mother in Simi Valley found Oxycodone and Xanax among her child’s Halloween candy following a “trunk or treat” event, according to the Simi Valley Police Department.The woman told police she took her kids to the event after seeing a post about it on Facebook.“When the family returned to their residence, the parent dumped her children’s candy out on the counter so she could spray it with disinfectant spray as a COVID-19 precaution,” police said.After inspecting the candy, the woman discovered a clear bag that contained blue pills, later identified as Oxycodone, and a white cylinder containing Xanax.The department is still investigating the incident and no suspect information was available as of Sunday morning“We would like to remind parents about the importance of inspecting any candy or edibles their children receive during Halloween events,” police wrote. 908

Setting up a showdown with California, the Trump administration on Thursday announced a plan to revoke a signature Obama-era environmental regulation.The administration wants to freeze a rule mandating that automakers work to make cars substantially more fuel efficient. It called its plan a "50-state fuel economy and tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions standard for passenger cars and light trucks."The administration also proposed a withdrawal of California's Clean Air Act preemption waiver. California and about a dozen states that follow its rules account for about a third of all the passenger vehicles sold in the United States.California Governor Jerry Brown called the proposal "reckless.""For Trump to now destroy a law first enacted at the request of Ronald Reagan five decades ago is a betrayal and an assault on the health of Americans everywhere," said Brown, in a statement. "California will fight this stupidity in every conceivable way possible."Thirteen states, plus Washington, DC, have adopted California's standards. Colorado announced plans to become the fourteenth.The attorneys general of 20 states, including California, pledged to sue the administration. They called the plan illegal, saying it would force motorists to pay more for gas and create more air pollution.The Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards require automakers' cars to average about 50 miles per gallon by 2025. The standards, enacted in 2012, get stricter every year leading up to 2025. The Trump administration's proposal would cut off the average CAFE increases in 2020, when automakers will have to produce cars that get an average of 43.7 miles per gallon."It's still a very aggressive program. We have been steadily increasing the standards... for almost a decade," said EPA Assistant Administrator Bill Wehrum on a call with reporters Thursday.The EPA and Department of Transportation cited safety as one reason for the changes. They claimed the reduced standards would make new cars more affordable. That would allow more people to buy cars with enhanced safety features, the government said.
