President Donald Trump tried to end the special counsel probe in December, marking the second known attempt to do so, The New York Times reported Tuesday. The Times report on Tuesday evening came as CNN reported that Trump is considering firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight of the Mueller probe, following a federal raid on Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen. In December, angered by reports of subpoenas for information on his business with Deutsche Bank, Trump told advisers he wanted the investigation to be shut down, according to the Times' report. The Times report, based on interviews with eight sources, said the President backed down after Mueller's office told Trump's lawyers and advisers that reports about the subpoenas were inaccurate. The report outlines the second time Trump is known to have moved to quash the probe, and follows previous reporting?that the President moved to fire Mueller last June, which a source said White House counsel Donald McGahn refused. Trump denied the story at the time.Under special counsel regulations, Mueller's office would have to discuss with the attorney general whether to keep an investigation under the special counsel's office or to refer it to a different jurisdiction. Because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from oversight of the investigation, Rosenstein would then presumably decide which investigative team moves forward.Trump has regularly lashed out at Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt," and following news of the raid Monday, he offered a mixed response when asked about firing the special counsel."Why don't I just fire Mueller?" the President said. "Well, I think it's a disgrace what's going on. We'll see what happens."White House press secretary Sarah Sanders?said on Tuesday?that Trump "certainly believes he has the power" to fire Mueller, who under the special counsel regulations can be removed only by the attorney general, or in this case Rosenstein. 2008

President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday that he plans on banning popular social media application TikTok in the US.According to White House pool reports, Trump said, “I have that authority. I can do it with an executive order or that.”“As far as TikTok is concerned we’re banning them from the United States,” Trump told the reporters. Trump added that he planned to take action against the popular video-sharing app as soon as Saturday.Earlier on Friday, Bloomberg reported that Trump was planning on forcing TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to sell the company. The company is based in China, a country Trump has ramped up tensions with amid the coronavirus pandemic. But Trump indicated to reporters on Friday that he is not in favor of allowing a sale of the company to an American-based company. The popular social media application has gained popularity among younger Americans in recent months. The application allows users to share short video clips, often accompanied with music. Users of the application orchestrated a campaign to Trump's first rally during the coronavirus pandemic in June in Tulsa to reserve tickets and not show up, which prompted lower-than-expected attendance numbers. The Trump administration has complained that the application takes data and is used by the Chinese government. "All the things that you care that you want to make sure the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t have, we have a responsibility to make sure that the systems that you’re using don’t give them access to that," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week. 1603

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Wednesday directing agencies deploy the National Guard to the southwest border. "The President has directed that the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security work together with our governors to deploy the National Guard to our southwest border," Nielsen said at the White House. The formal move follows days of public fuming by Trump about immigration policy, during which he has tweeted about immigration legislation in Congress, a caravan of migrants making its way through Mexico and what he calls weak border laws. 599

RAINBOW (CNS) - A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to abduct a 61-year-old woman while she was walking in a senior mobile home community in northern San Diego County, authorities said.At 1:10 p.m. Sunday, a 61-year-old woman called 911 and reported that a man, later identified as Francisco Gutierrez, had attempted to kidnap her in the 4700 block of Oak Crest Road, in a senior mobile home park in Rainbow, Sheriff's Lt. Arnold Aldana. The woman reported that Gutierrez had allegedly crept up behind her, grabbed her and attempted to drag her away, Aldana said. She was able to fight him off and run to a nearby neighbor to call 911.Deputies responded to the area and were flagged down by a witness who directed them to Gutierrez, who was sitting in a vehicle he had allegedly broken into, the lieutenant said.Deputies gave Gutierrez multiple commands to surrender, but he refused and a sheriff's K-9 was deployed, Aldana said. Gutierrez was taken into custody and transported to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside for treatment of unknown injuries he suffered during the arrest.Upon release from the hospital, Gutierrez was expected to be booked into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of kidnapping, assault with intent to commit rape, resisting arrest and attempted auto theft, Aldana said. 1333

Rep. Chris Stewart on Tuesday defended President Donald Trump's response to the death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in October, saying that "journalists disappear all over the country.""We have to have a relationship with some players we don't agree with," the Utah Republican told CNN's Brianna Keilar on "CNN Right Now." "Journalists disappear all over the country.""This is a very, very difficult challenge because we have to, on one hand, hold them accountable -- including the crown prince for whatever action he may have been involved with," Stewart added. "And at the same time what is protecting US interests? What is going to counter Shia extremists? What is going to help bring stability? What will help bring an end to the war in Yemen? You have to balance all those considerations as we move forward on this."After being subjected to massive international pressure, Saudi officials admitted the death of Khashoggi was a premeditated murder.Trump responded?to the incident in a statement last month subtitled "America First!" that called Khashoggi's murder "terrible" but declared Saudi Arabia "a great ally"On Tuesday, lawmakers were briefed by CIA Director Gina Haspel about the incident.Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN after the briefing with Haspel that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman "ordered, monitored, the killing" of Khashoggi. When pressed on Trump's dismissive response to the incident, Stewart added, "I think all of us agree there needs to be an appropriate response here, we need to hold individuals accountable and we need to completely understand the facts regarding that as well." 1757
