Orange County Superior Court Judge Gregory Jones on Friday said he was rejecting a bid by prosecutors to drop the case. He set a hearing for June 12 to determine how to proceed. NEW YORK (AP) — As employees of small businesses get their first September paychecks, they’re probably receiving their usual amount.Company owners are still withholding money for Social Security despite a presidential order allowing the tax to be deferred. The order President Donald Trump signed Aug. 8 allows employers to stop withholding the 6.2% tax from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31 and requires that it be paid between Jan. 1 and April 30 of next year. But business owners are wary, saying the plan opens up the possibility that companies might ultimately have to pay the tax if staffers leave. 603

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The man in charge of the FBI in Indianapolis said a school shooting at Noblesville Middle School West earlier this year could have been prevented.According to FBI Special Agent in Charge Grant Mendenhall, most school shootings are preventable, including the shooting at Noblesville. The difficulty is people reporting the concerns."They might not know exactly what the shooter is going to do, but in the vast majority of cases, somebody in retrospect had recognized some type of behavioral change that could have been significant and again, not a very high percentage of people reported it to law enforcement," Mendenhall said.The findings are all part of a new study released by the FBI that studied active shooter incidents over 13 years. The report states, in part:  822

NEW YORK -- Lori Gaeta gets a cup of coffee every day at a cafe on Lexington Avenue in New York City.Last week, she got a cup coffee and started a conversation with a homeless man that changed both of their lives.Gaeta says she met the homeless man, named William, on 61st Street. It was a conservation she couldn't get out of her mind.“He was paralyzed in a broken down wheelchair. I just felt he could use a blessing,” said Gaeta.All she knew about him is he is 61 years old and his name is William, he became paralyzed and is now homeless.She noticed his wheelchair was being held together with duct tape and was falling apart. She asked him if it was alright for her to get him a new chair.Gaeta sprung into action and started an online quest asking for help posting on a site called Nextdoor. Generous New Yorkers immediately came forward offering used chairs.Then a total stranger, named Elizabeth Menegan, offered to buy William a new chair, spending over 0.“You know that saying it takes a village to raise a child? Well, this took an entire neighborhood to bless this man. NEW YORK CITY — In what New York City's mayor is calling a "Christmas miracle," an NYPD officer is conscious and communicating after he was shot in the back in Brooklyn while responding to a 911 call for a domestic dispute, police said.The incident occurred in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn on Thursday night.Police said the alleged shooter has been arrested and the gun was recovered. A bulletproof vest protected the 27-year-old officer, who was rushed to a local hospital after being shot near Prospect Place and Ralph Avenue. It went into the vest, but didn't penetrate the officer's skin, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said.The shooter allegedly threatened his girlfriend, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.The girlfriend's mother repeatedly called 911, begging for police to come, Shea said. She said the boyfriend had threatened to shoot the home up. As officers on the scene interviewed the daughter, her boyfriend arrived.He shot an officer and then ran, Shea said. Other officers pursued and arrested him a few blocks away. Body camera video shows officers repeatedly tell the shooter to drop his gun. He put it down on the sidewalk and was taken into custody."Because the NYPD was there, that woman is alive right now," de Blasio said. "Because our officer put himself in harm's way, an innocent woman is alive."The officer’s precise condition wasn’t immediately clear, but police officials said the officer was awake and responsive and has since been released from the hospital.De Blasio and Shea spoke to the officer's parents."They felt that this was a Christmas miracle that their son was alive and well," de Blasio said.The NYPD asked people to avoid the area. People were advised to expect a police presence in the area."It's Christmas Eve.
