EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - After a series of crashes over the summer, people in El Cajon are calling on the city to add some safety measures to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Renette Avenue."It's very dangerous," says Julia Reyes, who lives near the intersection. "We have a lot of families and kids crossing through here. We have two schools near here too.""It's a regular race track," says David Pina, who also lives on the corner. He recently replaced the fence in his yard because a suspected drunk driver plowed into it over Memorial Day weekend."We were all in the house and heard a big bang in the street and all of the sudden, boom, right in the yard," he says.The intersection has stop signs for cars headed East and West. There are also cones and left-turn restrictions in the middle of the intersection. Pina says that only makes it worse."That sign ends up in the street all the time," he says of the "No Left Turn" sign in the middle of the road. He adds that people ignore the cones and drive straight through the intersection illegally.Neighbors have asked the city to install traffic-calming measures. They think a stop sign, speed humps, flashing lights or a sturdier barrier could be a solution.10News reached out to the City of El Cajon to see if there have been any discussions about adding safety measures to the intersection. A spokesperson from the Department of Public Works asked us to submit a formal public records request. Because of the holiday weekend for Labor Day, the city has not had a chance to reply to that submission.For Pina, he hopes something can be done soon. He worries that the next crash may cost him more than just a fence."My grandson sleeps in that front room," he says. "You gotta worry about the kids. I if somebody did come through that fence and come into the house, there's no chance for anybody. (KGTV) - An El Cajon company has big plans to make small scale recycling a part of people's daily shopping routines.One Earth Recycling will open 100 shipping container recycling locations over the next five years. They plan to put them in shopping centers and other high-traffic areas. The idea is to make it easier to get to a recycling center, rather than making people drive to industrial areas or other parts of town to redeem their deposits."I think for the vast majority of consumers, they don't know where to go to get their money back or to recycle responsibly, or they assume it's more trouble than it's worth to recycle," says Josh Turchin, the owner of One Earth Recycling.A recent report from Consumer Watchdog backs up the notion that people aren't willing to search for redemption centers. The report says around 40% of California's recycling centers have closed in the last five years. Meanwhile, Californians have left at least 0 million on the table by not returning their bottles and cans for deposit refunds.Turchin says making it easier will solve that problem. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A standoff in El Cajon ended Thursday afternoon after a man barricaded himself inside an apartment. According to police, the incident began unfolding before 1 p.m. near the intersection of Jamacha Road and Dorothy Street. Police told 10News the standoff was sparked due to a domestic incident at The Grove apartments.Police could be seen blocking off the street as officers stood near their patrol cars in the rain. Neighbors watched in awe from across the street."We heard the cops say that he made a comment saying he was going to burn the apartment down," said Christina Messenger. The man shattered the glass of the windows several times from the inside the first floor unit. At one point, he poked his head out to yell at officers. "You just don’t know whats going on in there," said Sherry Quijada. "You don’t know whether hes gonna pull a gun out and start shooting. You don’t know what someone like that is capable of."Eventually, a K9 officer was sent in, ending the hours-long standoff. (KGTV) — A transgender woman is suing an El Cajon gym over the use of gender-specific locker rooms.“My weight went from 340 pounds to 195 pounds,” Christynne Wood said. She says that weight loss is attributed to the water aerobics classes she has been taking at Crunch Fitness for the last eleven years. Not only did it help Wood shed the pounds, she also shed an old identity.“I lived so many years presenting myself as a male. Because I knew that is what was expected of me, and I didn't want to make others uncomfortable. The whole time, Christynne is inside Christopher going ‘I’m suffocating, please don’t let me die,” Wood said. Wood says she has identified as female since childhood. But she did not begin her transition from male to female until July 2016.Just two months after starting hormone therapy, she says a male gym member began to harass her.“The individual comes over to me, and says something untoward, and make a threatening gesture and walks in my direction,” Wood said. Terrified, Wood says she ran out of the men's locker room and told management. At first, she was led to the upstairs men's room, where there were fewer members than the women's facility. But she claims the harassment continued."I still must transit through the place where the assault took place to get to and from the pool for my workouts, so what have you done for me?"Days later, she brought a letter from her endocrinologist, explaining her transition and asking gym staff to accommodate her in the women's locker room. Last February, she legally changed her name and gender. But Woods says it took another seven months for Crunch to finally allow her to use their women's facilities."I thought I had friends in management that so totally understood me. When that was betrayed, how would you feel?"Wood says continued years of alleged harassment and neglect for her well-being led her to sue Crunch Fitness."It makes me cry that it had to get to this degree,” Wood said. “Nobody wants to sue anyone. Nobody does anything or pays attention until somebody hurts or inconveniences them and then they realize the magnitude and depth of what they’ve done wrong.”But she says this civil case is bigger than Christynne Wood.“I’m getting some form of justice, but it’s not just about me. There’s a whole sisterhood out there is being abused and marginalized. I don’t ever want this to happen to any of my T-girl [Transgender-girl] sisters,” Wood said.Crunch Fitness’ corporate office gave 10News a statement after the ACLU announced the lawsuit on Wednesday.  2647
