OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A partnership is turning around the lives of young people at risk in North County. As 10News explores Life in Oceanside, we’re turning our focus to the success of the Boys & Girls Club. One of the young people helped by the program is 17-year-old Hunter Meyer. Like many teenagers, he struggled to find himself. RELATED: Mayor Pete Weiss talks Life in Oceanside“I became someone who preferred to sneak out late, get into a lot of trouble and run-ins with police,” said Meyer. Meyer said he started hanging out with gang members in sixth grade. As a freshman, he was kicked out of high school. Life became more difficult for him. “We were drinking and I came back just feeling like I’ve lost everything. I kind of lost who I was, you know, and then the next day I tried to hang myself and my mom and little brother walked in. That was kind of the turning point where I realized things needed to change drastically,” Meyer said. RELATED: Oceanside businesses continue to rely on thriving military communityMonths later, Meyer found out he was referred to a program to help at-risk youth called Oceanside Youth Partnership. It was started by Oceanside Police Lt. Valdavinos. “The people he was dealing with didn't have positive relationship with law enforcement and we weren't getting to them early enough,” said Ashley Sanchez, an OYP crime prevention specialist and mentor. Meyer was in the first class, spending two hours per week for 12 weeks to be redirected away from gangs. RELATED: Oceanside to purify recycled water for a more sustainable future“OYP helped change my life but the Oceanside Boys and Girls Club gave them the opportunity to change my life,” he said. Two years since the first session, OYP has had many success stories like Hunter, who has been working for the Boys & Girls Club since 2018. 1853

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Neighbors in North County call this "Taking Back Oceanside.""We need to cite, we need to ticket, arrest when possible," said Andrew Andrioff. It's a response to a growing homeless population that's leaving neighbors frightened and frustrated. The San Luis Rey riverbed is covered with needles, tents, trash and shopping carts. Andrioff is behind the movement to change that. He was among dozens of people who addressed city council Wednesday night. RELATED: Oceanside group aims to clean up trash, violence in San Luis Rey riverbedHe says the social services offered in Oceanside may be making the situation worse. "Our concern is that we’re attracting habitual vagrants to Oceanside through these services," said Andrioff. "we don’t want to enable these people to continue to their criminal and drug-addicted lives."Councilwoman Esther Sanchez says the city has three homeless outreach teams but they need more help. "This really is a regional problem, whatever one city does everyone is going to want to go there so we all have to go at the same time," said Sanchez. The problem has only gotten worse since the city is forced to take in more people than it can handle. "Are we going to really be responsible for Orange County cities that are cleaning out the river and giving them one-way tickets to Oceanside?" said Sanchez. "I really think what we should be pushing is a blue ribbon committee, the county, the 18 cities, as well as the state."Recommendations made to the council tonight included declaring an Emergency Shelter Crisis and increasing police enforcement. The Taking Back Oceanside group is set to meet with the chief of police on October 24.  1750

OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) -- While many of San Diego County's beaches and parks are now off-limits due to the Coronavirus, Oceanside remains open. But some residents fear that a beach and golf course soft-closures only encourage people to ignore the stay-at-home order. Unlike the taped up beaches in San Diego, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas, Thursday evening, Oceanside decided on a soft-closure. The parking lots, Pier, picnic areas, and playgrounds are closed. But the beaches remain open. "We figured, as long as we can encourage people and enforce that social distancing, we would be able to keep those recreational opportunities available," Samuel Liston with the City of Oceanside said. One person taking advantage of Oceanside's open beach was surfer, Oliver Dillard of Bay Park. Earlier, he was at Pacific Beach but was told by a police officer to leave."I'm just in the moment. Being here now," Dillard said. But not everyone is thrilled. "My reaction to them keeping open the beaches in even a soft way is horror," Oceanside resident, Frances Pope said. Pope suffers from a rare Autoimmune Disorder. She lives in a senior community in Oceanside. She says if her local beach is the only one that is open, people will flock to it, and you can forget about social distancing. "We're going to have a swarm of people, and it's not just Oceanside that is going to be hit by that," Pope said. "They're going to go back to their homes, inland or down south, and they will infect their families."It is not only beaches. Oceanside's City-run golf courses are also one of the last ones to remain open. According to the Pro-shop, golfers must walk on the course. No golf carts will be rented unless a person has a disability placard from the DMV.Still, Pope says this "halfway measure" is not enough. She wants everyone to take the virus seriously and stay home. "Every single person that can stop one trip out helps to keep everyone else safe," Pope said. The city says in regards to the beaches, they have lifeguards on duty. And they will keep a close eye. "We are constantly reevaluating these processes. Every day, multiple times a day, and if there are problems, we will have to do more," Liston said. 2222
