CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - A massive training exercise coordinated between three Marine Corps. Air Stations in the Southwest took flight Monday.The goal is to ensure Marines and Sailors are ready if they need to move hundreds of troops and supplies fast. The exercise is comprised of about 1,300 troops, from MCAS Miramar, Camp Pendleton and Yuma. It took three months of planning."It really stretches all the muscles for all of the units to support something big like this," Lt. Col. Nathan Storm said.The training is almost twice as big as prior similar trainings."It gives I Marine Expeditionary Force the opportunity to get together and practice large scale operations like this for operations wherever the Marine Corps may send us in order to defend the United States," Lt. Col. Storm said.This particular mission is to take over an airbase and secure it as a supply route, "not that we’re necessarily planning for anything like that but we always have to be ready and be lethal for that eventuality," he said.Dozens of aircraft were meticulously coordinated to come in and take off in waves. Rows of MV-22 Osprey sat on the flight deck loading up Monday afternoon. Earlier two of the Marines' biggest assault support helicopters, the CH 53E Super Stallions, loaded up with dozens of troops and took off.The flights Monday were the crux of the past two weeks of training for the Marines and Sailors. "Fantastic! It is absolutely great to see these all of these different communities come together the way that they are supposed to, the way that they’re designed in the Marine Corps to support the war fighters of the 1st Marine Division," Lt. Col. Storm said.The aircraft will all meet in Twentynine Palms, near Joshua Tree, where they will train in a mock town, in scenarios similar to what they would see overseas. They will be extracted and brought back home Wednesday.Neighbors should not notice any difference in the amount of noise during the exercise. Lt. Col. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Spy, prisoner of war, patriot – at one time or another, all those words described Dr. Mary Walker, a practicing surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War.“She was a woman ahead of her time,” said Keith Hardison, director of the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.Now, though, Dr. Walker’s time has come. She is the focus of a new special exhibit at the center.“Dr. Walker wanted to go where the fighting was bloodiest,” said exhibit curator Molly Randolph. “She tried multiple times to join up and was denied.”Yet, she persisted and volunteered her medical skills to Union commanders during the Civil War. They put her to work – for no pay – on the front lines.That’s when her career as a spy began.“She used that cover of going into the countryside and providing medical care to do some espionage,” Randolph said.Eventually, the Confederate Army captured her and held her as a prisoner of war for four months, where she became well-known for wearing her trademark pants.“She was rather notorious,” Randolph said. “She was written up in the Confederate papers. Everyone thought this, you know, doctor - a female doctor who wore pants! - was a thing to poke fun at a little bit.”Suffering severe malnourishment at the Confederacy’s notorious “Castle Thunder” prison, Dr. Walker was eventually released in a prisoner exchange.“She was actually exchanged for a Confederate doctor, which she loved. She loved that she was worth so much to the federal forces,” Randolph said.Dr. Walker returned to the front lines to provide medical care for the Union Army. When the war ended, President Andrew Johnson awarded her the Medal of Honor.She became the first woman to ever receive it and – so far – remains the only one.“I’m surprised there’s only been one,” said Tom Jones, who was visiting the Medal of Honor Heritage Center from Illinois. “I know there’s not been a lot of women in combat, but they’ve been serving since the Civil War, obviously.”In 1917, the military instituted new rules for awarding the Medal of Honor and stripped Dr. Walker of hers because, technically, she had not been formally enlisted – though she had repeatedly tried to sign up.She died two years later, in 1919.“She refused to return it and continued to wear it,” Randolph said. “So, it was obviously something that was incredibly important to her.”Six decades later, a military board and President Jimmy Carter would once again reinstate her medal.“She was willing to challenge things that were unfair or that were convention, but were holding people back,” Hardison said.Dr. Walker was a lifelong suffragist. Her exhibit coincides with this summer’s 100th anniversary of the 19thAmendment, which granted women the right to vote in the U.S. It’s an amendment she didn’t live long enough to see become a reality.Her exhibit’s curators hope she will remind others of how to face life’s challenges.“She really shows us how to respond with poise, with gusto, with dignity,” Randolph said, “and I think Dr. Walker is just a wonderful example.”For more information on the exhibit about Dr. Mary Walker, click here. 3168

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped a “brazen” smuggling attempt Wednesday at the U.S.-Mexico fence in East San Diego County, officials said. Agents near Campo reported the incident Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. when a Dodge 4500 utility truck crossed into the U.S. Fifteen minutes later, agents saw a man who had a truck matching the suspect vehicle, using bolt cutters trying to cut the lock of a South Bay resident’s private gate. Agents tried to stop the man, but he drove off. RELATED: Border Patrol arrests teen with toy car at U.S.-Mexico borderFollowing a short pursuit, the truck stopped and everyone inside ran away, Border Patrol officials said. “A vehicle drive-thru, with overloaded and unsecured passengers, particularly in this terrain, can certainly result in a rollover accident with serious injuries and death,” said San Diego Sector Interim Chief Douglas Harrison. “The breach of this old landing mat wall is illustrative of the need for more hardened infrastructure with greater impedance and denial capabilities to keep the area secure. I’m proud of our agents’ steadfast vigilance that put a stop to this smuggling attempt.” Agents captured 16 people who admitted to entering the country illegally. CHARLESTON, SC -- Jacob Kosinski has a lot to celebrate after graduating from his Christian-based home-school program summa cum laude with a 4.89 grade-point average. His mom, Cara Koscinski planned a graduation party for her 18-year-old son and ordered a cake from Publix for the big occasion. Koscinski ordered the cake online and provided the information she wanted on the cake. She wanted it to say "Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018." When she typed the message into the cake message option, the Publix website didn't' like the middle word in the phrase.The website put three hyphens in its place, so the finished cake read "Congrats Jacob! Summa --- Laude, class of 2018."Koscinski explained the meaning of the word in the special instructions box on the website and ordered the cake. She even pointed out that "the system is mistaking the word 'cum' for something inappropriate vs. Latin."Koscinski sent her husband to pick up the cake before the celebration, and when he returned from the store, the lines remained in place of "Cum." Koscinski shared her frustration on Facebook and said her son, Jacob, "was humiliated!!!" "Shame on Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70-year-old mother) about this joke of a cake."Koscinski called Publix and explained the situation to the assistant manager.
