McDonald's hopes new breakfast items will draw more customers to the golden arches. The company announced Tuesday that it would expand its breakfast menu. The new items, along with local deals and low prices, should help "win back customers at breakfast," said CFO Kevin Ozan during a call with analysts. With the new items, McDonald's is aiming to reverse a troubling trend: American customers are eating elsewhere.Sales in the United States grew by 2.4% in the third quarter, but that was mostly because people spent more. The number of American customers declined.Over the past couple of years, McDonald's (MCD) has tried a number of different strategies to boost its US business. It put self-order kiosks in restaurants. It added new menu items. And McDonald's added delivery. That helped boost sales among existing customers. But those initiatives, part of a massive effort to modernize its US restaurants, haven't helped McDonald's hold on to existing customers or bring in new ones. The company believes a revamped breakfast menu could help."It's very competitive out there at breakfast," said CEO Stephen Easterbrook. "We're still losing a little share ... it continues to be a battleground," he said. "We want to do better at breakfast."McDonald's didn't offer details on what the new items will be.In recent years, Taco Bell has found success with its breakfast offerings. The chain started serving breakfast in 2014 and now sells items like the naked egg taco, which has a fried egg for a shell. Dunkin' (DNKN), which offers a two-sandwich deal for breakfast, has also done well in the morning.Competitors have upped their game and McDonald's may have "lost a little bit of ground" on breakfast over the past few years, said Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy.McDonald's has already made some changes that may entice new US customers. It added coffee and breakfast sandwiches at some locations. Easterbrook said it's too soon to tell whether those efforts are paying off.Hottovy thinks that McDonald's has a good shot at turning around its fortune."With a little bit of focus," he said, McDonald's "can get right back in.""They've gotten better about product innovation," Hottovy added. Customers responded enthusiastically to McDonald's new buttermilk crispy chicken tenders. That could bode well for the company's new breakfast item.Although McDonald's is struggling to win over customers for breakfast, it has used its popular breakfast items to drive growth in the past. Sales surged after McDonald's launched its all-day breakfast menu in 2015. 2628
Many store personal information such as their credit card, concert tickets and auto insurance on their smartphone. Why not also have your driver’s license or passport on your phone? It seems Apple is pondering this question as it filed a patent last week to develop systems to store personal information such as driver’s licenses and passports on smartphones. The patent allows Apple to continue developing exclusive technology to verify users so such sensitive documents could safely be store on devices. The patent also notably does not specifically mention iPhones, which could be a sign the technology could be used for other devices, such as Apple Watches, MacBooks and iPads.Besides driver’s licenses and passports, Apple mentions that the technology could also be used to store library cards, tickets and university IDs.While the technology could draw a lot of questions, the patent process generally takes years to complete, meaning it’s not expected to be a feature coming to iPhones in the near future. 1018
Micheal Brown stared at the acceptance letter in front of him: It said yes.So did the next one. And the one after that. The 17-year-old from Houston applied to 20 of the best universities in the US. He was admitted to every single one with a full ride and 0,000 in additional scholarship offers."It's something I'm proud of because I see my hard work paying off, determination paying off, sacrifices paying off," the student told CNN. 444
Many gamers have been frustrated by the lack of availability of PlayStation 5 units since its release earlier this month. On Black Friday, many stores had a handful of units for sale, and in response, people lined up for hours in hopes of scoring the coveted gaming console. The PlayStation 5 marked Sony’s newest generation console since the PlayStation 4 was released at the end of 2013. The PlayStation 5’s release coincides with Microsoft’s release this month of the XBOX Series X. The XBOX Series X has also had a limited supply. Some are using the initial scarcity of the console for profit.Bids on Ebay are showing PlayStation 5 consoles for selling for more than ,000. The console retails for 9.99.In a statement to gaming website gamesindustry.biz, Sony denied claims by Bloomberg that it was cutting production of PlayStation units. “While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false," the statement reads. "We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production."The PlayStation 5 offers a complete redesign to PlayStation’s classic controller. It also delivers graphics that are akin to powerful, more expensive gaming computers. But some experts say if you’re unable to initially score a PS5 to not fret. The initial offering of games is slim, but with time, the number of games available for the PS5 platform will grow. 1438
