ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Fruitful results have been achieved some one year after the fourth ministerial meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Chinese envoy and Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin told Xinhua here on Friday.Liu was in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to attend the 16th African Union (AU) summit as special envoy of the Chinese government.During the FOCAC ministerial meeting held in November 2009 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the Chinese government announced eight new measures of promoting Sino-African cooperation.Since then, China has been actively implementing various programs and projects according to the eight new measures, Liu said.The “China-Africa Science and Technology Partnership Program” and the “China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Program” have been launched, Liu said, adding that the aid program of agricultural demonstration center is in smooth implementation process.Meanwhile, China is actively working on establishing the China-Africa partnership in addressing climate change, and is strengthening communication and coordination with Africa on the issue of climate change, Liu said.The Chinese envoy added that various programs and events such as the China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation Forum, the “African Culture in Focus 2010” activities, and the “20+20 Cooperation Plan of Chinese and African Institutions of Higher Learning” have been launched or successfully held. WASHINGTON, May 3 (Xinhua) -- People diagnosed with asthma in the United States grew by 4.3 million between 2001 and 2009, according to a new report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).In 2009, nearly one in 12 Americans were diagnosed with asthma. In addition to increased diagnoses, asthma costs grew from about 53 billion U.S. dollars in 2002 to about 56 billion dollars in 2007, about a six percent increase. The explanation for the growth in asthma rates is unknown, according to the CDC.Asthma is a lifelong disease that causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing, though people with asthma can control symptoms and prevent asthma attacks by avoiding things that can set off an asthma attacks, and correctly using prescribed medicine, like inhaled corticosteroids. The report highlights the benefits of essential asthma education and services that reduce the impact of these triggers, but most often these benefits are not covered by health insurers."Despite the fact that outdoor air quality has improved, we've reduced two common asthma triggers -- secondhand smoke and smoking in general -- asthma is increasing," said Paul Garbe, chief of CDC 's Air Pollution and Respiratory Health Branch. "While we don't know the cause of the increase, our top priority is getting people to manage their symptoms better."Asthma triggers are usually environmental and can be found at school, work, home, outdoors, and elsewhere and can include tobacco smoke, mold, outdoor air pollution, and infections linked to influenza, cold-like symptoms, and other viruses.According to the report, asthma diagnoses increased among all demographic groups between 2001 and 2009, though a higher percentage of children reported having asthma than adults (9.6 percent compared to 7.7 percent in 2009). About two in five uninsured and one in nine insured people with asthma could not afford their prescription medication."Asthma is a serious, lifelong disease that unfortunately kills thousands of people each year and adds billions to our nation's health care costs," said CDC Director Thomas Frieden. "We have to do a better job educating people about managing their symptoms and how to correctly use medicines to control asthma so they can live longer more productive lives while saving health care costs."

BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhuanet) -- No formalin has been found in the milk powder imported from S. Korea into China due to different milk sources, the general agency of South Korea's Maeil Dairies said Tuesday.The declaration came after Maeil Dairies, South Korea's third-largest dairy company, was found to have produced milk from cows given feed tainted with formalin.The agency said that the milk used in the dairy products exported to China comes from New Zealand, Europe and other places outside South Korea, so Chinese consumers should have nothing to worry about.Formalin, a liquid form of formaldehyde gas, was largely used in the past as a disinfectant, pesticide and bactericide for preservation of biological specimens.Its use has dwindled over the years due to health concerns.After the incident, South Korea has decided to conduct emergency inspections on milk sold in the market by four major dairy companies, to check the presence of formalin.
