KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The numbers are in: more Americans will travel this Thanksgiving than the past 12. The travel organization AAA released its annual holiday travel forecast Thursday. It predicts nearly 51 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles to celebrate the holiday. That's a 3 percent increase from last year, and the highest number since 2005. Travelers can expect to pay more for gasoline than years past, but less for airfare. AAA expects 89 percent of travelers to get to their destination by driving. To avoid getting caught in traffic, experts say you should stay off the roads the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, especially in the afternoons. That's when normal workweek commuters and travelers are on the road at the same time. "Plan ahead. Try to make sure you're getting out the door early in the morning, if possible. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - A Jamul man is cleaning up and unsure about how to start over, two weeks after the Valley Fire destroyed his home."Numb is a good word. I've cried, too," said Chuck Stevens, 62.The numbness started on Sept. 5. As the Valley fire approached his home on Northwood Drive early in the evening, Stevens, who was driving home from a baby shower, was turned away by authorities, miles from his home."I saw major flames a quarter-mile from my house ... felt helpless, just helpless," said Stevens.He returned two days later and saw the devastation. His double-wide trailer, his home for the last 15 years, was gone, and so was his truck, car, and two motorhomes."Devastation, everything burned to the ground,' said Stevens.His vehicles were only insured for liability. He didn't have wildfire insurance for his home."They would not give it to me because of the age of the mobile home," said Stevens.Stevens says his most painful loss is the hundreds of photos of his late love, his girlfriend Marilyn Norman, who died of a heart attack two years ago. They were together for more than a decade."Just devastated. I can never look at these photos again ... After years go by, you lose some memories if you don't look at the photos. That's what I really miss," said Stevens.Sadly, family members say they have yet to find any photos of the couple anywhere. COVID-19 daily deaths have held fairly steady in recent months since a slight uptick in the summer.The surge in cases comes as Americans head to the polls for the 2020 election — and Pew Research polling shows that more than half of Americans believe the pandemic is a "very important" issue that will affect their vote. However, the importance of COVID-19 seems to break down among party lines — 82% of Democrats consider the pandemic to be an important issue, while just 24% of Republicans believe it to be important.Despite rising case numbers and hospitalization rates, President Donald Trump has insisted that the U.S. is "rounding the corner" on the pandemic and has touted his administration's work in the pre-production of the vaccine. JBS Tolleson, Inc. is recalling more than 5.1 million pounds of raw beef products that may be tainted with salmonella, the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Tuesday.The recalled beef was produced and packaged between July 26 and September 7 according to FSIS. The products have been distributed nationwide and include the brands Kroger, Cedar River Farms, Grass Run Farms and JBS generic among others.This is an expansion of a recall that was first issued in October for the same reason.The total amount of "non-intact raw beef products" that have been recalled now exceeds more than 12 million pounds.The recalled beef is linked to an outbreak of salmonella that, as of November 15, has caused 246 people to become sick in 25 states, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No deaths have been reported but 56 people have been hospitalized."FSIS is continuing to investigate illnesses associated with this widespread outbreak, and additional product from other companies may also be recalled," the recall notice said.Consumers should discard or return any recalled beef. FSIS said its concerned that consumers may unknowingly have recalled beef in their freezer. In addition, "only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160°F. Other cuts of beef should be cooked to a temperature of 145°F and allowed to rest for at least 3 minutes," USDA said.Symptoms of salmonella usually begin within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food. These can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever that last between four and seven days.
