GUANGZHOU, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese exporters, faced with dwindling foreign orders amid global economic slowdown, are diverting their attention to domestic markets.     At the ongoing Canton Fair, China's leading trade fair, businesses that canvass foreign buyers are also focusing on the local market as their customers in the Western nations are dragged into recession by the global credit crisis.     Qiao Guan, board chairman of the Jiangsu Hotwind Sauna Equipment, said his company is planning to divert some of the business from abroad to the domestic market.     The company's sales in the United States, which accounted for about 30 percent of its total exports, had dropped by more than 20 percent this year, Qiao said.     He hoped the local sales could compensate the decreasing orders in the foreign market. "We have completed research on the domestic market, which shows some exported goods are affordable and have good sales prospects in the local market," he said.     The Himin Solar Energy Group, based in east China's Shandong Province, produces solar water heaters that are sold both at home and abroad. Xue Xinwen, head of the firm's international trade department, said the company had been losing orders as some Western countries canceled subsidies on environment-friendly imports.     "We have sent more staff to market our products to local infrastructure authorities and companies," he said.     "Domestic consumption has been greatly boosted by a robustly growing economy, creating positive situations for exporters to go local," he said.     But the readjustment can be difficult.     Li Jianlan, a worker with Wanji Plumbing Materials Co. Ltd, based in Ningbo, said an exclusive exporter like her company lacked channels and brand loyalty in the domestic market. "These are two different kinds of markets, and it takes a lot of work to be familiar with the ways business is done with local buyers," she said.     Some goods that are made for export are deemed too expensive for Chinese buyers.     Huang Yan, general manager of the L-bright Export Manufacture Corporation, said it had been very difficult to sell its products to domestic buyers as they lacked a price advantage.     Local governments, aware of the trend, are taking action to encourage the conversions. Guangdong Province, the country's major exporting base, issued a notice in June, ordering local quality inspection authorities to provide needed technical assistance to exporters.

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held a meeting Friday to study the application of the scientific outlook on development.     The meeting was chaired by the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Hu Jintao who is also Chinese President.     In a statement issued after the meeting, the Political Bureau urged all Party members to deepen study and application of the scientific outlook on development to promote economic growth, social stability, and the governance capacity of the CPC.     The top priority of the application of the scientific outlook on development had always been to maintain fast and steady economic development, to adjust the country's industrial structure and to safeguard and improve the livelihood of the Chinese people, the statement said.     However, it noted that China still faced a number of challenges and problems during its social and economic development.     Currently, the spreading global financial crisis and the slowdown of world economic growth had exerted great pressure on business operations of Chinese companies and the country's employment situation, the statement said.     Moreover, the environmental cost for China's economic development was too high, the statement said, adding that the country's industrial structure remained problematic and lacked independent innovation capacity.     It also said China had witnessed increasing difficulty in maintaining steady development of its agricultural sector and in increasing income of its rural residents.     Work safety, food and drug safety, and other issues of vital interest to the Chinese public must also be addressed with stepped-up efforts, it said.     The statement urged all Party members to apply the scientific outlook on development to their work to deal with the global financial crisis and maintain steady economic growth.     Party members should be fully confident while implementing government policies aimed at stimulating domestic demands and promoting economic growth, it said.

These agreements include one involving China's southwestern Chongqing Municipality, the U.S. city of Denver and car maker Ford on an electric and hybrid automobile project.     The two-day SED, which is to end on Friday, also covers macro-economic risks, trade challenges and the investment environment.

ATHENS, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday that China hopes to push its ties with Greece to a higher level.     The Chinese government has attached great importance to its relations with Greece and has been viewing the bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, Hu said during his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.     China hopes to expand the scope of shared interests with Greece and push forward bilateral cooperation in various sectors, the Chinese president said.     He suggested that the two sides set up a guideline for long-term economic cooperation and establish a more effective communication platform for enterprises on both sides. ALGIERS, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Algeria voiced commitment here Wednesday to step up bilateral strategic and cooperative relations and called for intensified cooperation in fields such as infrastructure, energy and resource exploration.     In his meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo called Algeria as "an important cooperation partner," noting that China highly values its strategic and cooperative relations with Algeria.     China and Algeria are both developing countries and share common aspiration to develop their economies to improve the welfare of their peoples, said Wu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC).     He noted that China will join hands with the Algerian side to cement the bilateral cooperation in long-term and strategic perspectives.     He proposed the two nations should work closer in fields such as infrastructure construction, energy, resource exploration and establish an economic and trade cooperation zone.     "We should encourage our enterprises to work together on some big and important projects to improve the quality and level of the China-Algeria cooperation," Wu added.     "The Chinese government will encourage Chinese enterprises to establish business and invest in Algeria, adopt open policy on technology transfer to Algeria and launch various training programs for Algerian personnel in an effort to contribute to Algeria's economic structure adjustment and employment enlargement," the Chinese top legislator said.     Agreeing with Wu's proposal, Ouyahia said that the Algerian government has a sincere will to learn from China and boost bilateral cooperation and mutual investment to help the country's economic transformation and realize sustainable development.
