The largest nutrition study in the world could change the way people eat as researchers indicate that your genes aren't the reason for your weight loss or gain.Susan Kim, 49, an Illinois mom, wife and teacher who was flat out fed up, and tired of struggling with her weight, a problem she's battled her whole life.“I was scrolling through my phone one day and I saw this study that I started reading- and I was intrigued,” Kim said.She admits she also wanted to prove a point to her husband of 20 years."He has maintained if I would only eat what he eats then my problems would be solved and there’s sugar in his food too and that’s a lie. That’s not the key,” Kim said.She signed up to be a part of The Predict Study commissioned by King’s College in London. A research team sent her everything she needed, including a box with a way to submit her blood, saliva and glucose.Researchers say the Predict study has allowed them to predict an individual's response to food.“The study showed us there’s no such thing as an average person-when it comes to food, we’re all different and unique and this is not something that food manufacturers or anyone else wants to tell you they want everyone to be the same,” Dr. Tim Spector, who is a senior researcher.Spector and his team of scientists gathered huge amounts of data, using Zoe, a data science company, and artificial intelligence to personalize nutrition.“The idea was to come up with enough information from research from very large studies around the world- and put it together in a format used in advertising and internet based procedures that would come up with algorithms that would tell an individual what the best way to eat is,” Spector said.The team worked off of probabilities, but they also have lots of new technology to use.“We can look at your gut microbes in a very detailed way,” Spector said. “We have glucose monitors that will tell you what your glucose level is. We’ve got finger prick tests people can do at home that will tell you what your blood fat is doing. We’ve got exercise monitors, sleep monitors and apps that record everything you’re doing and how you’re feeling every minute of the day.”There were identical twins in the study who had different responses to food. Hollywood actress Dame Emma Thompson also participated in the study."She has a big interest in health in general and as an actress, is always conscious of her health and her weight and wanted to find out more about nutrition,” Spector said about Thompson. “She claimed to have been on every diet under the sun and wanted to learn what the latest cutting-edge science was.”Spector says Thompson is doing well and is thoroughly enjoying what she's learning about her body. The personalized plans developed from the Predict study help you eat food that reduces inflammation. It's based off your biology, not deprivation popular fad diets.It's also not a diet or calorie restrictive plan, according to Spector.“We’re talking about every time you have French fries or too much carbohydrates or a big fatty load that stresses your blood and metabolism and if you keep getting these stresses, it builds up long term inflammation in your body,” he said. “Your body is always stressed and reacting like its infected or fighting something.”Kim has lost about 12 pounds in 5 weeks, and says that's purely by logging food, using the soon to be launched Zoe App and paying attention to how her body responds to certain foods. The at home test kit is based on tests but allows people to pay attention to their own biology.For Kim, that meant paying attention to what things caused her blood sugar to spike, and which meals are the best for her to function.“It’s personalized just for me,” Kim said. “It cuts through all of the confusion of what to eat. It’s incredibly simple, I’m never hungry or deprived (with) no emphasis on counting calories no buying packaged meals.”Researchers say they've got an explosion of data that will move dieters from the stone age to the modern world of nutrition, one that reduces a short term problem, for long term results. The only Louisville police officer who was charged with a crime relating to the raid that resulted in the death of Breonna Taylor has been accused of sexual assault.According to WAVE-TV in Louisville, a woman has filed a lawsuit against former Louisville Metro Police Department Officer Brett Hankison, accusing him of assaulting her after he gave her a ride home from a bar where he was working security.According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, Margo Borders, met Hankison through mutual friends in 2017. In 2018, Border met friends at Tin Roof, a bar west of downtown Louisville where Hankison was working a side job as a security guard.Borders said she had been drinking that evening, and when she went to call an Uber, Hankison insisted that he drive her home. When he dropped her off at her apartment, he allegedly invited himself in. Borders alleges that when she went to sleep, Hankison "willfully, intentionally, painfully and violently sexually assaulted" her.When Borders regained consciousness, she yelled at Hankison and asked him to leave. Borders alleges that Hankison later messaged her and allegedly tried to convince her that they had "engaged in consensual relations."The lawsuit also includes claims from nine other women who say Hankison either approached them with unwanted sexual advances or assaulted them.CNN reports that Hankison's police file includes 50 internal reports, including two reports of alleged sexual misconduct. He was exonerated in both incidents.Hankison was fired from the LMPD earlier this year. He faces three charges of wanton endangerment for his actions in the raid that led to the death of Breonna Taylor, as he's accused of firing his weapon and endangering the lives of Taylor's neighbors.No officers involved in the raid faced homicide charges in Taylor's death, and Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has said the officer's actions were justified because they were fired upon by Taylor's boyfriend. Over the years, everyone from Billy Joel to Cheryl Crow to Jimmy Buffet has graced the stage here. But it’s the smaller, less well-known artists who truly rely on a black box venue like this one.“It’s a purist’s room. It’s just a great old school style place,” explained owner Chris Cobb.Since March though, Exit/In and thousands of other venues like it across the country have been shut down--forced to close their doors because of the coronavirus.“It’s just not safe. It’s not safe to do what we do right now, unfortunately, and there’s no pivot option. We can’t curbside a concert, we can’t to-go a concert,” Cobb lamented.It’s that kind of daunting reality facing owners of clubs, venues and smaller music halls across the country. Many have already run out of money and most are out of time. Aside from the 57 employees that Cobb had to lay off, there are also closed signs now popping up on businesses around the neighborhood who rely on live shows to bring customers in.“We’re on the edge of a cliff with a huge number of venues right there at the edge and about to go over, and they won’t come back,” he added.While it’s not a giant stadium, venues like Exit/In are the kind of spaces where smaller artists get their start. In cities across the country, independent venues are deeply engrained in the culture of the communities they operate in.For musician Daniel Donato, not having a stage like Exit/In to play on has been difficult.“I want to create memories that people can go back to. I want to be somebody’s Friday night. And the first thing a musician plays is the venue, they don’t play their instrument, they play the venue they’re in,” Donato said.In addition to the income he’s lost, the 25-year-old musician is also missing out on a chance to refine his craft. There are countless musicians like him across the country stuck in a kind of painful limbo.“I have to have the energy of the people in the room, take that, put it in a guitar and make it something great,” he added.By the end of the year, live performance venues are expected to lose about billion on ticket sales alone. Because of the impending crisis facing smaller venues, nearly 2,800 have banded together to form the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).A stunning 90 percent of venues in the organization say they will close by the end of the year without any federal assistance.“It’s happening and every day that goes by is a risk that it happens more, people have run out of money,” explained Audrey Fix Schaefer, who serves as the director of communication for the group.In recent months, NIVA has created the "Save Our Stages Act." It’s a billion grant program for independent venues with bi-partisan support. Now, all they need is a vote in Congress.“People have run out of money and they’re running out of hope,” she added.As for Cobb, it's not just about the jobs that have been lost, it's about the music that the country may never hear if independent venues go silent forever.“It’s hard to think about American music without this network of independent music venues that have existed in this country for decades now. American music, as we know it, would not exist. I’m afraid that’s what we’re about to learn the hard way is it can’t exist the way we know it if these venues go away,” Cobb said.But for now, that's a song Cobb is trying not to write, hoping that the sun doesn't permanently set on some of the nation's most beloved stages. 3854
