AUGUSTA, Maine – Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine has won the hardest-fought race of her career, turning back a challenge by Democrat Sara Gideon and surviving to serve a fifth term.Collins, one of four candidates on the ballot, won a majority of first-place votes. That meant no additional tabulation rounds were necessary under Maine’s ranked choice voting system.Gideon has conceded, telling supporters on Wednesday that she called Collins and congratulated her on the win.Collins long touted herself in the fiercely independent state as a bipartisan centrist who’s willing to work with both parties to get things done. But opponents accused her of being an enabler of President Donald Trump, citing her votes to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and for tax cuts that critics said favored the rich. 832

At a briefing on Friday, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said the White House condemned Hong Kong's decision to delay its legislative council elections amid the coronavirus pandemic — a day after the president suggested delaying the 2020 presidential election. On Friday, Hong Kong announced it would be pushing its elections back a year, citing concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19. Pro-democracy lawmakers in the semi-autonomous city say the move was an attempt by the pro-China majority to disenfranchise voters. When asked for the White House response to Hong Kong's decision, McEnany read a prepared statement."We condemn the Hong Kong government's decision to postpone for one year its legislative council elections and disqualify opposition candidates," the statement read, in part. "This decision undermines the Democratic process and freedoms that underpin Hong Kong's prosperity, and this is only the latest in a growing list of promises by Beijing that promised autonomy and freedoms to the Hong Kong people."On Thursday, President Donald Trump floated a delay of the 2020 presidential election in a tweet, citing his concerns with mail-in voting. It was just the latest in a series of several misleading tweets Trump has posted that push dubious information about mail-in voting. The Constitution grants Congress the responsibility to set the dates for federal elections. The current election day date — the first Tuesday in each November — was established in a 1948 law.Several top Republican lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said they would not support a bill to move the election. 1674
AVON PARK -- A traffic stop in Avon Park, Florida, on Sunday led to what the Highlands County Sheriff's Office calls one of the largest drug seizures in recent memory in their county. Deputies confiscated enough fentanyl to kill nearly 40,000 people, as well as over a pound of heroin and nearly a pound of cocaine.Around 7:40 p.m., Deputy Seth Abeln saw a blue Ford Focus on North Central Avenue that had a tag light out. After Abeln stopped the vehicle, Deputy Ben Jones and K-9 Gentry were called to do a free air sniff of the vehicle. According to the sheriff's office, Gentry indicated there were drugs in the car.A search of the vehicle turned up:● 554 grams of heroin● 450 grams of cocaine● 99.6 grams of fentanyl● 975 oxycodone pills● 107 Xanax pills● 90 vape pens with liquid THCThe sheriff's office says a dose of 2-3 milligrams of fentanyl is enough to be deadly, meaning there was enough of the drug to kill 40,000 people using 2.5 milligrams as a fatal dose. To put that in perspective, that would be enough to kill nearly 40 percent of the people in Highlands County. The street value of the fentanyl is ,000. Add that to the ,000 of cocaine, ,000 of oxycodone and ,000 of heroin, and the total seizure is worth 0,000 on the street, not including the value of the vape pens. There was also a loaded handgun inside the car. deputies say. The driver, 40-year-old Ruben Ramirez-Rivera, was arrested and charged with:● trafficking cocaine● trafficking heroin● trafficking oxycodone● trafficking a controlled substance● possession of opium or a derivative (fentanyl) with intent to sell/deliver● possession of a Schedule III or IV drug with intent to sell/deliver● possession of heroin with intent to sell/deliver● possession of cocaine with intent to sell/deliver● felony possession of marijuana● possession of a weapon during commission of a first-degree felony● possession of drug equipmentRivera is being held without bond at the Highlands County Jail.“I’m very proud of the work done by the deputies involved in this arrest,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said. “To take this amount of drugs off the street is a huge accomplishment, and our county is safer because of it.”This article was written by Dan Trujillo for WFTS. 2249
