Half, or more, of households in America’s largest cities report facing “serious financial problems during the coronavirus pandemic,” according to new survey results. These problems include having to deplete their savings, unable to pay full rent, etc.The survey included responses from more than 3,400 people in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston over the course of July 1 through August 3. It was conducted by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in partnership with NPR and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.In all four cities, at least 53 percent of households reported facing serious financial problems; between 35 to 40 percent of those people said they had used up all or most of their savings during the coronavirus pandemic.Latino and Black households were more likely to have financial problems, according to the survey, with responses about ten to 15 percentage points higher than the city’s average.In addition, 54 percent of those households making less than 0,000 a year reported having financial problems during the pandemic. There are tools that can help make that decision though, like state-specific modeling data.Courtney Noffsinger of Hendersonville, Tennessee, is among the many parents grappling with this kind of anxiety.The mother of two has spent most of the blistering hot summer social distancing from other family members and friends. She and her husband even recently purchased an RV to go on camping trips, so they wouldn't run the risk of catching COVID-19 from crowded vacation destinations.For Noffsinger, the idea of sending her kids back to school where they’ll be surrounded by hundreds of other students and potentially exposed to the virus is daunting to say the least.“Parenting is already hard, parenting in the middle of a pandemic has been extremely difficult,” Noffsinger said as she watched her daughter scroll through TikTok.Noffsinger’s two kids haven't been to school since March and are both anxious to get back into the classroom. Her 14-year-old son Keagan is entering high school and her 11-year-old daughter Presley is entering middle school. While both children have asked their parents to return to in-person learning, Noffsinger is nervous about sending her kids back to school, especially given her daughter’s underlying asthma.“As their parents, we want to give them what they want, but we’re fearful, especially when the data keeps changing,” she said.As coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country, school districts are being faced with the reality of trying to provide education to the nation’s young people in the midst of the pandemic. While some of the country's largest districts have decided the entire fall semester will be virtual, many other districts are turning to hybrid models where students will attend school at least one or two days of school a week.COVID-19 has created a complex paradox for both parents and educators. Hospital nurses in Philadelphia are ready to go on strike amid a surge of coronavirus cases across the country, according to the union. The union said in a statement that 800 members of the union at St. Mary Medical Center are planning to picket on Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the main sticking points is minimum staffing levels, which is the proportion of patients to nurses in a hospital.“Safe staffing is the main issue in our negotiation--it's why we organized last year in the first place,” says Kathy McKamey R.N., who works on St Mary's MG2 unit and has been at the hospital for 10 years, said in a statement provided by the union. “Trinity has refused to commit to the minimal safe staffing guidelines every study out there has said improve patient outcomes.
