BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Florida Atlantic University's commencement ceremony scheduled for 5pm today has been canceled and the Student Union is being evacuated after the school received what law enforcement considers a credible threat.An FAU source tells WPTV that right as the ceremony was about to start, a note was found in a women's bathroom stuck to the mirror that contained a threat in reference to the graduation ceremony.Sean Brammer, Chief of FAU Police, would not specify what type of threat was issued, saying only that it was specific to the commencement.The school is considering different options on rescheduling the commencement ceremony, but have not announced their intentions yet.FAU Assistant Vice President Joshua D. Glanzer said "There were 462 students scheduled to participate in the ceremony. Every effort will be made to give these students the recognition they deserve." 900

Baseball's Cleveland Indians are going to drop their nickname after 105 years, the New York Times first reported on Sunday. In July, the Indians stated they were reconsidering their nickname. Cleveland’s baseball club have been known as the Indians since 1915. For much of that time, the Indians logo was known as “Chief Wahoo,” but in recent years has been mostly phased out. The Indians wore the logo for the final time in 2018.Activists say that the Indians and Redskins nicknames promote ethnic stereotyping.The National Congress of American Indians has been opposed to nicknames such as the Indians and Redskins, as it wrote in a 2013 report.Before the 2020 NFL season, Washington's football team dropped the "Redskins" nickname, and has gone by the "Washington Football Team" moniker."The professional sports industry, specifically the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Hockey League (NHL) and the leagues’ team owners have failed to address the racist origins of deplorable race based marketing strategies of the past," the report read. "Often citing a long held myth by non-Native people that “Indian” mascots “honor Native people,” American sports businesses such as the NFL’s Washington “Redsk*ns” and Kansas City “Chiefs,” MLB’s Cleveland “Indians” and Atlanta “Braves,” and the NHL’s Chicago Black Hawks, continue to profit from harmful stereotypes originated during a time when white superiority and segregation were common place."Each of these professional sports businesses attempt to establish a story of honoring Native peoples through the names or mascots; however, each one—be it through logos or traditions (e.g., fight songs, mascots, human impersonators, and fan culture)—diminishes the place, status, and humanity of contemporary Native citizens. What is true about many of the brand origin stories is that team owners during the birth of these brands hoped to gain financially from mocking Native identity. As a result, these businesses perpetuated racial and political inequity. BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — The FBI is investigating after a piece of rope resembling a noose was found in a Black firefighter's locker in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington. An FBI spokesman confirmed Saturday the bureau is investigating and said that the case is in its initial stages. Bloomington officials had asked the FBI to investigate. Officials say that the rope was tied into what appears to be a crude noose and was discovered at a Bloomington fire station on June 15. The discovery was reported to Fire Department leaders eight days later, on Tuesday. The fire chief says such acts that “embody hate, intimidation, and aggression will not be tolerated.” Mayor Tim Busse says he's “disgusted, angry, and embarrassed by this cowardly act.” 758
