WASHINGTON (AP) — With lives and the economy hanging in the balance, President Donald Trump is weighing how to refine nationwide social-distancing guidelines to put some workers back on the job amid the coronavirus pandemic. At a virtual town hall hosted by Fox News on Tuesday, Trump said he'd reassess after the current 15-day period of social distancing. The president said he is hoping the country will be reopened by Easter. His enthusiasm for getting people back to work comes as he takes stock of the political toll the outbreak is taking. It also sets up a potential conflict with medical professionals, including many within his government, who have called for more social restrictions.Health experts have made clear that unless Americans continue to dramatically limit social interaction, staying home from work and isolating themselves, the number of infections will overwhelm the health care system, as it has in parts of Italy, leading to many more deaths. While the worst outbreaks are concentrated in certain parts of the country, such as New York, experts warn that the highly infectious disease is certain to spread. The president’s comments come as Senate leaders work to negotiate a deal to ease the economic pain of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. Both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the top Democrat, Sen. Chuck Schumer, say an agreement appears close. The package would free up nearly trillion to help businesses and workers. A key provision in the emerging package would provide stepped-up unemployment insurance for workers furloughed because of the pandemic. After being ravaged for days, stocks rose as congressional and White House negotiators approached a deal. Any deal struck by the Senate would need House approval next. 1782

Winston is one lucky pooch. The French bulldog beat the odds Friday night when he plummeted from a six-story building in Manhattan's Lower East Side, only to crash through the sunroof of a car parked below.Winston was taken to an emergency vet hospital with minimal injuries. Emma Heinrich, the dog's owner, was shocked that he survived."I'm still trying to wrap my head around the astronomical odds of him walking away from this fall with nothing more than a few cuts and scratches," Heinrich told CNN.She had just finished walking Winston when he escaped her grasp and ran away. She said the dog bolted up a set of stairs and out onto the roof through a door that was left open. Then, he jumped."Before he could slow himself down it was too late and I watched him disappear over the edge, falling six stories landing with a terrifying crash," Heinrich wrote 869
Wearing a face covering in public is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Still, not everyone is wearing one. A new study offers some insight into why."In particular, just by looking around, it was quite obvious that maybe there were some gender differences," said Valerio Cabraro, a researcher with Middlesex University in London. Cabraro teamed up with the Mathematical Science Research Institute in Berkeley, California to survey roughly 2,500 people, half men and half women, about wearing a face covering out in public."We did find men are less likely than women to state that they wear a face covering anytime they leave the home, when engaged in essential activities and when around people outside the house," said Cabraro. When asked their reasons for not wearing a mask, a few answers stood out.The survey showed clear gender differences in the answers, with more men stating that wearing a face covering was shameful or a sign of weakness. "Wearing a face covering is a sign of weakness, wearing a face covering is shameful and the stigma associated with wearing a face covering is preventing me from wearing one," said Cabraro. The survey also found men are more likely than women to think they will not be affected by the coronavirus. Whether wearing a mask or not, psychologists say seeing other people out in public who are not wearing a mask can affect how safe you feel."I think there’s kind of a fear of individuals feeling vulnerable having a perception of being in fear by wearing a mask, that wearing a mask does for some people resemble I’m afraid, I’m vulnerable," said Dr. Apryl Alexander, a psychologist and associate professor at the University of Denver. Alexander says most people have spent the last 60 days at home, missing important events or milestones in their lives, and are eager to get back to normal. This desire to move on from this sense of loss can affect whether people feel inclined to wear a face covering while out in public. "If I see people not wearing masks, for me that communicates, ‘Do you care about my safety and my wellbeing and the safety of people here?’” said Alexander. “And then I think for some people they might think, ‘Well is it safe? Is this all blown out of proportion? Is the danger not really there, that this person feels comfortable not wearing a mask?’"Alexander says she hopes both men and women adhere to the CDC guidelines about wearing masks out in public and that the exhaustion they feel from having to quarantine doesn't give them a false sense of safety during this time. 2628
