IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A recent break to a sewage pipe south of the U.S.-Mexico border is allowing sewage to flow freely into the Tijuana River Valley and Pacific Ocean, officials say.The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) said they were alerted to the break in the Tijuana sewage pipe by Mexico authorities recently. The pipe broke Dec. 7, according to Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, though the city was notified Tuesday.IBWC officials said Wednesday, "CESPT (Tijuana Water Utility) has informed us through the Mexican Section that a rupture was discovered yesterday on the Colector Poniente in Southeast Tijuana. This rupture caused the soil above the pipe to collapse in an auto junkyard. Several sinkholes were discovered yesterday by the workers at the property and notified CESPT who then diverted the flows upstream to a stormwater collector which drains to the Tijuana River. "The IBWC estimated the flow of sewage into the Tijuana River to be at 300 liters per second, or approximately 7 millions gallons per day. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A new event venue is honoring the history of the South Bay, while giving people a gorgeous view for their parties and meetings.Salt Drift Pointe, at 536 13th Street, has 13,000 square feet of space. It includes a main room, a bar, patio, pier and more."It's a huge blank space," says Co-Owner Richard Inunza of the venue. "We've got a great atmosphere and great views."Inzunza and his co-owner Terry Snyder designed the venue specifically to try and pay homage to the South Bay. The "rustic wall" in the event space is painted to reflect the colors of the bay. And the name, Salt Drift Pointe, refers to the industrial history of the region.RELATED: New Chula Vista event space highlights city's rich history"When Rich and I thought about the name for this place, we wanted to grab the natural landscapes," says Snyder. "As you can see from the beautiful views we have of the salt ponds and the old salt mines, we wanted to include the salt."Salt played a big part in the South Bay story. According to San Diego History Center Historian Andy Strathman, it was the first industry that helped the region shift away from a farm-based economy during the late 1800s."You could build very large settling basins to bring the saltwater in and allow it to evaporate over time," says Strathman. "You would get the water increasingly saline, and eventually, you could harvest the salt."In the 21st century, the South Bay has shifted its economy again, trying to attract more tourists. The new Chula Vista Bayfront project is expected to bring in more than billion every year once it's completed.Inzunza and Snyder say it's fitting that a new business like theirs, which will tap into the hospitality industry, honors the past."We hope families can come and enjoy this place for years," says Snyder. To celebrate, Salt Drift Pointe is hosting a free grand opening party on Oct. 30. The public is welcome to stop by and take a look at the new venue from 5 - 8 p.m. 1993

If success at the box office equated into Academy Award success, you would expect "Star Wars," "Wonder Woman" and "Beauty and the Beast" to do well during Sunday's Oscars. While these movies, which represented the top three movies for domestic gross at the box office in 2017, were nominated for a combined six Academy Awards, a number of movies that didn't do so well at the Box Office received more nominations. As a matter of fact, if you combined the domestic box office totals of the nine films nominated for Best Picture, the total would still be lower than "Star Wars, The Last Jedi.""The Shape of Water" came in at No. 50 at the box office in 2017 according to Box Office Mojo. "The Shape of Water" led all movies in 2017 with 13 Academy Award nominations. "The Shape of Water" grossed million and is up for top awards such as Best Picture, Best Director (Guillermo del Toro) and Best Actress (Sally Hawkins)."Dunkirk" was second behind "The Shape of Water" for Academy Award nominations with eight, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan) and Best Score. "Dunkirk" topped all nine films nominated for Best Picture, grossing 8 million in the US, ranking No. 14. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is up for seven nominations on Sunday. The film, which is also up for Best Picture, grossed just 2,168 in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" has since made some cash, grossing million, which made it No. 55 domestically in 2017. "Phantom Thread," which has six nominations including Best Picture, had an even more humble box office journey. It grossed 6,495 in its opening weekend, before taking in million overall. The film did not crack the top 100 domestically. "Darkest Hour" also had six nominations and is up for Best Picture, and only grossed 5,000 its opening weekend. It has since grossed million in the United States. Among movies that topped the Box Office, "Star Wars, The Last Jedi" received four Academy Award nominations. The picture was the top grossing domestic film in 2017, making 8 million. The second-best grossing film of 2017 in the United States, "Beauty and the Beast," was nominated twice. The only other film with a nomination among those in the Top 10 at the box office was "Guardian of the Galaxy." "Guardian of the Galaxy," which was the fourth-highest domestic grossing film, received a nomination for Best Visual Effects.  2548
