SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the city's Get It Done mobile app has led to thousands of tons of trash being removed.In the app's first three years, more than 7,000 tons of trash, debris, and waste has been removed from public spaces around the city.The city broke that number up into:Illegal dumping/litter removal - 4,440 tons of wasteEncampment debris cleanup - 2,528 tons of wasteThe app was made available in 2017 to encourage residents to report trash and other concerns in their neighborhoods. Since then, city crews have responded to more than 6,500 reports and conducted more than 32,000 proactive cleanups.The average response time has also shrunk from 25 days in 2017 to five days in 2020, the city says.Council members have also been able to use the data received from the app to identify hot spots in their districts.The app is part of the city's "Clean SD" program. The program was born out of a need to clean unsanitary areas in the public, including homeless encampments, according to the city. Since 2017, the city has sanitized and power washed 18,000 city blocks, or about 1,800 miles of sidewalk."Clean SD is all about restoring a sense of pride in our communities and making sure our neighborhoods are clean and safe for everyone. Our cleanup crews have accomplished that and so much more," Faulconer said this week from the site of a frequent illegal dumping site in Paradise Hills. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the man shot and killed near a downtown parking garage in early December as 37-year-old Samuel Burkhalter.The shooting happened on the 1400 block of G Street around 10 p.m. on December 1.Police say they received several calls reporting gunshots in the area. After arriving, officers found Burkhalter at the entrance to a parking garage in the area. Officers provided first aid until relieved by San Diego Fire-Rescue, but say Burkhalter died at the scene.Investigators say a light-skinned man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black hat was seen running through the garage after the shooting. The suspect was later identified as Tyler Cosby, 23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer signed off Thursday on his .3 billion 2020 budget previously approved by the super majority of the city council.The budget funds the largest infrastructure investment in San Diego’s history and includes more funding for homelessness programs, road repairs, tree trimming services and housing reform.Faulconer appeared to be most excited about the expansion of the Clean San Diego initiative, which aims to clear debris from across the city.The mayor announced during his signing ceremony that million will go toward the expansion of the CSD program, and more crews will be hired to clean up areas citywide 24 hours a day, seven days a week.“We’re restoring pride back in our neighborhoods with every cleanup job, and now we’re investing more resources into ‘Clean SD’ so we can do even more for our communities,” said Faulconer.Funding for the program was more than doubled from Fiscal Year 2019 after Faulconer requested an additional .5 million for its budget.Since the program started in May 2017, more than 3,600 tons of debris have been removed from neighborhoods, canyons, and the San Diego River.Other efforts in the program include an increase in street sweeping in the East Village, sanitizing sidewalks, and graffiti removal. 1302

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer Monday signed an executive order that will allow certain businesses and places of worship to operate outdoors.In light of California’s restrictions on indoor operations and activities, the executive order will permit businesses such as gyms, churches, barbershops and hair/nail salons to “expand their operations into private parking lots,” City of San Diego officials said.The order takes effect immediately, although Faulconer said the state will have to amend its regulations for salons and barbershops to operate outside.Faulconer said, “Right now, we need to give our small businesses every tool possible to get through this difficult time or they might shut down for good. By allowing more and more businesses to operate outdoors, we are delivering solutions to help San Diego’s small businesses get to the other side of this pandemic while putting thousands of San Diegans back to work safely and responsibly with proper physical distancing.”The San Diego City Council will vote on the newest executive order into a city ordinance at a later date.On July 13, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced restrictions on indoor operations across the state as coronavirus cases surged in California.Earlier this month, Faulconer signed an executive order that allowed restaurants within the city to move their operations outside.Notable parts of that order included allowing restaurants to establish sidewalk cafes and use private parking lots for dining. 1503
