POWAY (KGTV) -  Poway firefighters are joining forces with the Muscular Dystrophy Association to raise funds for the firefighters' annual Fill the Boot campaign on Thursday.The goal of the campaign is to help free children and adults from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS, and other life-threatening diseases. These diseases can take away the ability to walk, move, smile, talk, and breathe.40 firefighters and cadets from the Poway Firefighters Local 3922 and MDA will be stationed at different locations throughout Poway with boots in hand asking pedestrians, motorists, customers, and other passersby for donations.The event begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made at the following locations:   753

President Donald Trump said on Monday he is choosing among five women to nominate to the Supreme Court by the end of the week, and is pushing for the nominee to be confirmed by Election Day.Trump said that he has had conversations with his potential nominees, and could meet with them in person later in the week.“I’d rather see it all take place before the election,” Trump said to reporters.The nominee would replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Friday after a bout with metastatic pancreatic cancer. No matter the nominee, they will face one of the most challenging nomination processes ever seen.Election Day is just 43 days away, which will make for a shorter nomination process than typically seen. Also, the Senate generally takes the weeks leading up to the election off to allow for senators to campaign. Nomination hearings might force senators to stay closer to Washington in the critical days leading to the election.The timing has both frustrated and stymied Democrats. In 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would not consider President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February 2016. That left the Supreme Court down to eight justices for over an entire year.But this time, McConnell says its different with Republicans holding both the Senate and White House.“The American people re-elected our majority in 2016,” McConnell said. “They strengthened it further in 2018 because we pledged to work with President trump on the most critical issues facing our country. The federal judiciary was right at the top of the list. Ironically it was the democratic leader who went out of his way to declare the midterm 2018 elections a referendum on the handle of the Supreme Court."Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer fired back at McConnell."To decide it at this late moment is despicable and wrong and against democracy,” he said.McConnell and Trump could face hurdles from within the party. If four Republicans choose to vote against a confirmation, the vote likely fails.So far, Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have said they would wait until after the election to vote for a nominee. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he would sign a pardon for suffragette Susan B. Anthony on the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.Susan B. Anthony was arrested in 1872 after she voted in a presidential election. She was arrested about a week later and eventually convicted of "knowingly, wrongfully, and unlawfully" voting without the right to do so. She was fined 0, a fine which she promised to never pay.While Anthony never did pay her fine, her conviction for voting illegally has remained on the books for nearly 150 years.Anthony died in 1906 — 14 years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment.Fourteen other women voted alongside Anthony in the election. (KGTV) — Poway will host two simultaneous Fourth of July fireworks shows this summer in order to encourage social distancing while continuing the tradition.Fireworks will launch from both Poway High School and Sportsplex in South Poway Business Park at 9 p.m. on July 4, the city says."Keeping these celebrations going is more important than ever," said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. "They will bring people together in spirit and shine a little bit of light into the darkness we've experienced due to the pandemic, all while we celebrate our nation's founding."The two locations will allow for a nearly 360-degree view of fireworks from the Sportsplex while allowing those who traditionally view the show near the high school to continue doing so.However, there won't be any viewing allowed at Poway High School's football field due to public health orders. Instead, anyone who wants to view the show can purchase a parking pass to watch from across the street at Lake Poway. City officials say a map of the best viewing locations and more information will be posted online here soon.Anyone who heads out to view the shows is reminded to observe social distancing from groups that are not from the same household and wear facial coverings around non-household members. 1285
