SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As we get into the heart of fire season, there are big concerns for neighbors who live along a former golf course. The old Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club is full of dried brush. Neighbors say they are worried the owner is letting the property become a fire hazard. Chain linked fences block off the entrances to the now-shuttered golf course. "It's looking pretty rough," says neighbor Jeffery Acogido. He's been living in his Carmel Mountain Ranch home for almost 30 years. "The course was actually here before the residences."The brush from the site comes right up to neighbors backyards. As we continue to see, warmer weather neighbors say the unwanted vegetation is becoming a fire hazard. "The community is really concerned that it's just going to be a matter of time that something unfortunate might happen."There have been talks of developing the land. 10News made calls to speak with the owner about the neighbor's concerns but haven't heard back. While many are dreading the drive, others have chosen to take the rails.Gary Green was visiting his friend in San Diego for the last few days. But he is making the trip back to Los Angeles on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. "The car is a painful experience. The 405 is obnoxious. The 101 is obnoxious. He went to Kaaboo in Del Mar last year. It was a special time for him and his wife, Kelly.“We got to see Tom Petty right before he died, so we're super thankful,” Memeo said. They had a great time, so decided to go again this year.“So we got the tickets, and then all this stuff happened,” Memeo said.He bought the tickets through Vivid Seats. It cost roughly ,800 for their entire family. “That’s a lot for anybody,” he said.Meanwhile, his family got devastating health news. Kelly’s cancer returned. Danny said her prognosis is not good, with an estimated 12 months left to live.“[We’re] thankful for 12 months, thankful for family,” Danny said. “But wow, what a difficult year for a lot of people.”Back in July, Kaaboo officially announced there would be no event this year. “All pass holders will have the option for a full refund,” said a statement on its website.Because Danny’s family bought tickets through a different site, it’s a different story. As of Monday morning, he did not have any luck getting his money back.“They just said… when it does get rescheduled, you’ll get those tickets and you can sell them if you don’t want them,” Danny said the company told him.Vivid Seat’s website said that if an event is canceled, customers “will receive a Rewards Cash loyalty credit for 110% of the full value of your order total.”For postponements, customers “will need to hold onto [their] tickets for now.”Team 10 contacted Vivid Seats and informed them of the Memeo family’s situation.A spokesperson said they would refund them immediately.“Vivid Seats was happy to refund Kelly. At Vivid Seats we have refunded thousands of orders totaling tens of millions of dollars since the global pandemic shut down all live events in America. We have also provide an over million dollars in extra store credit to customers during this difficult time. Lynn Walsh is the Ethics Chair for the Society of Professional Journalists and said social media can be a good place to get information, as long as you know how it works and some red flags to keep an eye on. “Remember that the content that you’re seeing is all based on an algorithm and that algorithm is based on content that you are normally engaging with and the people that you are connected with and engaging with,” she said. She said social media will tailor what you see to who and what you interact with, so a good tool can be getting off apps and going straight to the source. She said to try googling stories to see diverse coverage of the subject and other related stories. She said a tool to tell if an informational post is true is to see if there is a link to more information. If someone just posts a picture or screenshot with facts or information, ask for more. “Hey do you have a link that adds or provides more information? Because the county is not going to post this jpeg image online. There’s going to be a link on a website, it’s going to link back where there’s more information,” she said. She also reminds that social media companies can filter content. She said they each have different policies on how and what they filter. “People say ‘oh it’s my First Amendment right to publish anything I want on these platforms.’ Remember the First Amendment applies to the government censorship of your opinion. It does not apply to businesses, if a business wants to decide to take something down, they can, that is their private platform,” she said. While news outlets and social media platforms are responsible for being accurate, she also pointed out that in an era of sharing posts, people also need to hold themselves accountable.“The third group that has responsibility in misinformation and things spreading, it’s the public.
