BEIJING, Aug 5(Xinhunet) -- China's machinery industry has rebounded during the first half of this year, but the momentum is likely to slow as the country's economy cools. The machinery industry has grown by 37 percent during the first six months of 2010, with a total output value of 6.59 trillion yuan, according to the China Machinery Industry Federation, a quasi-governmental institution that oversees growth of China's machinery sector. The machinery industry, which has benefited from the government's 4 trillion yuan investment spending spree, enjoyed expansion in large-scale construction projects over the last year. The construction machinery sector reported 54 percent growth during the first half of this year, according to the federation. The strong growth of the industry is based on preliminary statements by several listed machinery companies submitted to the stock exchange.Shanghai-listed Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Development Co, which is also planning to launch a listing in Hong Kong, predicted its profit would grow by 50 percent to 100 percent over the first half this year.Sany Heavy Industry Co is also expected to record 85 percent growth this year, according to Ping An Securities. The maker has already reported a growth rate of 170 percent in profit during the first quarter of this year. However, not all machinery industry sectors are reporting the same momentum as domestic demand has decreased this year. New orders in power generation equipment, transmission and substation equipment as well as heavy machinery, have rolled back this year."It is unlikely to see significant growth in the output of power equipment this year and it will probably stand around 117 million kW since the base figure is already huge," according to Cai Weici, vice-president of the federation, adding that China's output of power equipment already makes up half of the world's total."There is also less demand for heavy machinery used in steel production because the industry is eliminating outdated productivity, thus reducing market demand," Cai said.Fixed-assets investment in the machinery industry which has maintained a growth rate of over 40 percent since 2004 slowed down by 27 percent to 79.8 billion yuan, signaling less reserved strength for further growth. In term of exports, the machinery industry will be exposed to several uncertain factors including a more flexible yuan exchange rate as well as rising labor and raw material costs. The federation forecasts the industry's growth rate will be 20 percent in 2010.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- All entertainment activities at the Shanghai World Expo will be suspended Sunday in a show of respect for the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province. The Chinese national flags at the Expo Garden would fly at half-mast, and both the music broadcast at the opening and during the day would be stopped, the Shanghai Expo Bureau announced Saturday.Sun Weimin, the Expo Bureau's concierge director, said flags of the Bureau of International Expositions and the Shanghai World Expo would also fly at half-mast.Other Expo participants could decide for themselves whether to fly their flags at half-mast.The announcement was in line with that of the State Council, China's cabinet, which ordered suspension of all public entertainment and that Chinese flags fly at half-mast Sunday. The mudslide, which hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on Aug. 8 has killed at least 1,239 people and an estimated 505 are still missing.According to the Expo Bureau, the Gansu Pavilion will hold a "solemn and simple" ceremony starting 10 a.m. Sunday. The big screen in the pavilion will broadcast pictures and videos of disaster relief in Zhouqu County. On Saturday night, a performance from Chongqing Municipality will include a tribute to victims of the Aug. 8 mudslide.Almost 100 performances and cultural activities scheduled for Sunday would be suspended. A performance by the Panama national troupe, scheduled Sunday morning at the Panama Pavilion, would be held on Saturday evening, a pavilion spokesman told Xinhua.Sunday also marked the National Pavilion Day for Equatorial Guinea. Whether the scheduled celebration to be held was still under discussion, said the Expo Bureau.Since Aug. 8, volunteers at the Shanghai Expo have put stickers with four Chinese characters "May Heaven Bless Zhouqu" on their uniforms, to call for attention on the mudslide-hit area. On the sticker is a picture of Zhouqu, taken by an Expo volunteer who had just returned from a volunteer teaching program in the county.Donation boxes in the Pavilion of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have received donations for Zhouqu.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars). BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's health chiefs Tuesday renewed their commitment to providing the country with iodized salt and refuted concerns of excessive iodine intake.Chen Rui, an official with China's Health Ministry, said at a press conference that the benefits of iodized salt still outweighed the concerns of excessive iodine, citing the results of nationwide risk assessment of iodine intake led by the ministry. The assessment was carried out in response to claims from media and medical experts that some regions, coastal areas in particular, reported cases of excessive iodine intake since last year.Chen said iodized salt was still essential in China.Since 1996, iodine has been added in salt across the country because in most parts of the country, the average diet is iodine deficient. Both iodine deficiency and excessive intake can lead to thyroid diseases.Chen Junshi, a research fellow with China CDC involved in the assessment, said even in coastal areas the risk of iodine deficiency still loomed larger than excessive intake.

LONDON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese automaker Geely has completed the acquisition of Volvo Car Corporation from Ford in London.Geely Chairman Li Shufu and Lewis Booth, Ford's chief financial officer (CFO) attended a signing ceremony in London on Monday."This is a historic day for Geely, which is extremely proud to have acquired Volvo Cars," said Li."The signing and completion of this acquisition reflects the commitment of Ford and Volvo executives to the future of this company, along with the vital efforts of union representatives and government officials in Sweden, Belgium and China as well as other relevant countries," said Li."This famous Swedish premium brand will remain true to its core values of safety, quality, environmental care and modern Scandinavian design as it strengthens the existing European and North American markets and expands its presence in China and other emerging markets," he added.Geely named Stefan Jacoby, chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America, as president and chief executive officer of Volvo Cars.Jacoby said: "I am honored to join a company with the prestige and growth potential of Volvo. Our employees, suppliers, dealers, and above all our customers, can be confident that Volvo will preserve its special status as the industry leader in vehicle safety and innovation, even as it pursues new market opportunities."Jacoby will join the board of Volvo Cars, chaired by Geely chairman Li. The board comprises several new directors including Hans-Olov Olsson, former president and chief executive of Volvo Cars and former chief marketing officer of Ford, who will become vice chairman of the board.Hans-Oskarsson, deputy chief financial officer, will replace Stuart Rowley as the CFO of Volvo Cars. Rowley and former Volvo president and chief executive Stephen Odell are moving to leadership roles at Ford of Europe.Geely paid 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in cash plus a 200-million-dollar note, less than the price worth 1.8 billion dollars announced in March due to changes in pension obligations and working capital.Under the new ownership, Volvo Cars will keep its headquarters and manufacturing presence in Sweden and Belgium, and its board will have autonomy to execute its strategic plan. Volvo and Ford will maintain close relations in component supply.
