BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- An artistic performance was staged in Beijing on Monday night to mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of late Chinese leader Liu Shaoqi.     Li Changchun and Vice President Xi Jinping, who are members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, watched the performance together with more than 2,000 people of various walks of life in the National Center for the Performing Arts.     The performance was composed of five parts to show Liu's dedication and contribution to the cause of the Party and the people in different revolution and construction periods.     Liu was born on Nov. 24, 1898, in Ningxiang County of Hunan Province, central China. He was one of the earliest members of the CPC, joining the Party in 1921, shortly after its founding. In the following years, he served at many important positions in the Party.     Liu was elected vice chairman of the central people's government in September 1949, just before the founding of New China. Later he was elected chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. In April 1959, he was elected chairman of the People's Republic of China.     Severely persecuted during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977), Liu died of illness in Kaifeng of Henan Province on Nov. 12, 1969. KUNMING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Yunnan section of the Sino-Vietnam land boundary demarcation project has ended with 665 boundary tablets erected, an official with the foreign affairs office of southwest China's Yunnan Province said here on Saturday.     During the past eight years, six Chinese teams cooperated with their Vietnamese counterparts and demarcated the borders of Jiangcheng, Jinping, Hekou, Maguan, Malipo and Funing.     All the land border demarcation work in the Yunnan area was completed on Dec. 20, in accordance with the "Vietnam-China Land Border Treaty."     Large boundary tablets were established on Hekou's roads, rail terminal and harbor along the Yunnan section of the border.     The completion of the task represents a major step in Sino-Vietnamese relations.     China and Vietnam exchanged views on Wednesday on solving the remaining issues connected to border demarcation and erecting border markers, reached an agreement and issued a joint statement.

BERN, Switzerland, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland decided on Tuesday to begin a joint feasibility study on creating a bilateral free trade zone in the second half of this year in preparation for formally launching negotiations on the issue.     During talks in the Swiss capital, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and President of the Swiss Confederation Hans-Rudolf Merz exchanged views on the current international financial and economic situation and briefed each other on the policies and measures China and Switzerland have taken regarding the international financial crisis. Hu's last visit was on May 16, when quake relief work was in a critical phase.     The 8.0-magnitude quake, centered in Wenchuan County, left more than 69,000 people dead, 374,000 injured, 18,000 missing and millions homeless. WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Washington Friday for a summit to discuss issues concerning financial markets and the global economy.     President Hu, and other leaders from the Group of Twenty (G20) members, have been invited by U.S. President George W. Bush to Saturday's meeting, the first in a series of summits to mitigate what economists predict could be a long and deep downturn.     Later in the evening, the Chinese president is expected to attend a dinner hosted by Bush for all the leaders.     "The leaders will review progress being made to address the current financial crisis, advance a common understanding of its causes, and, in order to avoid a repetition, agree on a common set of principles for reform of the regulatory and institutional regimes for the world's financial sectors," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino last month in making the announcement of the summit.     At a press briefing last week, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said that China expects to build a fair, inclusive and efficient international financial system.     "We hope to consult with other participants to reform the international financial system and finally try to establish a fair, inclusive and efficient system," He said.     He said that China would take an active part in the summit-related activities in a constructive attitude, work together with all the parties for the achievement of pragmatic outcome, and impel the international community to tackle the financial crisis in a timely, comprehensive and effective manner.     The members of the G20 include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.     The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF),the president of the World Bank, the secretary-general of the United Nations and the chairman of the Financial Stability Forum have also been invited to the Washington summit.     Washington is the first leg of President Hu's five-nation trip. He will later pay state visits to Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru and Greece. During his stay in Peru, he will attend the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) forum in Lima.
