BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance (MOF) said Monday it had allocated 28.23 billion yuan (4.27 billion U.S. dollars) to assure retired enterprise employees receive their pensions before the arrival of the Spring Festival.The State Council, or the Cabinet, decided at an executive meeting last December to raise the retired enterprise employees' pension about 10 percent from 2010 levels, or about 140 yuan per person per month in 2011.The MOF also said local governments had issued 10.24 billion yuan of festival subsidies to 85.97 million people.The Spring Festival, the Chinese lunar New Year is a time for family reunions in China. It falls on Feb. 3 this year.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Computer sales declined in the first three months of this year for the first time since 2009 worldwide.PC sales fell 1.1 percent in the first quarter to 84.3 million worldwide, according to tech research firm Gartner Wednesday, well short of its forecast for 3 percent growth.The dip was the first since the second quarter of 2009, when most of the world was still in the grip of economic turmoil."Although the first quarter is traditionally a slow one for PC sales, these shipment results indicate potential sluggishness, not just a normal seasonal slowdown," said Gartner, in a statement.Consumers select IT products at an IT fair named "Sham Shui Po computer festival" in Hong Kong, south China, Feb. 15, 2011. The eight-day IT fair kicked off here Monday. BAODING, Feb. 2, (Xinhua) -- All-out efforts should be made to combat drought for a summer grain harvest, said Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday in an inspection tour to north China's Hebei Province."We need to adopt comprehensive measures to ensure supply of capital, technologies, facilities and materials to enable winter wheat to safely grow through the winter," said Hu, when inspecting drought conditions at a wheat field in Xishanbei Township of Baoding City, Hebei.Over the past three months, North China has been hit by severe drought, seriously threatening normal agricultural production.Hu, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the inspection visit in Baoding from Tuesday to Wednesday, to welcome the Spring Festival, or China's Lunar New Year, with local officials and residents.Hu beat a drum together with villagers during a new year celebration in Shijiatong Village, Xishanbei Township of Baoding.The president visited the home of Yan Deshu, an aged CPC member in the village, and pasted the Chinese character "Fu", meaning fortune and happiness, on the gate of Yan's yard.Hu also visited a long-distance coach station in Baoding, and extended Spring Festival greetings to passengers, station workers and volunteers.Hu inspected a unit of armed police in Baoding and made Chinese dumplings together with the officers and soldiers.

BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhuanet) -- A new research indicats taking vitamin D could ward off vision loss from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in women younger than 75, according to media reports on Tuesday.In the research, women under 75 who consumed sufficient vitamin D cut their risk of developing early age-related AMD, a leading cause of vision loss and blindness, by 59 percent when compared to women with vitamin D-poor diets.Researchers found that vitamin D levels among patients in the study were most affected by the amount of vitamin D they consumed, through certain fish, dairy, eggs, and leafy greens, not by the amount of outdoor exposure they had. Considering many Americans are actually deficient in vitamin D, this study may offer one more reason for women to include vitamin D-rich foods in the diet, said the lead author on the study, Amy Millen of the University of Buffalo.

YANGON, May 6 (Xinhua) -- A five-day Myanmar traditional medicine exhibition is underway in Myanmar's former capital of Yangon beginning Thursday, aimed at promoting the development of the country's traditional medicines and disseminating medical knowledge to the public.With over 120 booths, traditional medicine producing companies are displaying their traditional medicine products and producing accessories as well as giving traditional treating service and medical education talks.As the Myanmar traditional medicine is playing a more and more important role in treating diseases in the country, the government urges traditional medicine practitioners to protect and preserve them from depletion and extinction and to ensure their perpetual existence.Myanmar is conducting research on treatment of major diseases -- diabetes, hypertension, malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhea and dysentery through traditional medicine.To do research more effectively and on a wider scale to have the Myanmar traditional medicine standardized, the country holds traditional medicine practitioners conference every year to introduce the country's traditional medicines and its medical practices and the last conference, which was the 11th, took place in Nay Pyi Taw in December 2010.At the same time, the practitioners are also urged to strive for the promotion of the standard of Myanmar traditional medicine to reach international level.
