SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s one of San Diego’s most iconic parks, but there’s a push to change its name and possibly everything it stands for.In September, two very different sides clashed at Chicano Park. The clash required police to break it up.The park is the heart of Barrio Logan and its murals are a colorful reminder of its history.Jorge Gonzales says it’s symbolic of the civil rights movement of the 70s. “These murals tell the story of the Civil Rights era. Right? That went far and beyond Barrio Logan and Chicano Park,” said Gonzales.Five people questioned that history in September at what was called the Patriotic Picnic.Police had to protect them from dozens of people who surrounded them in protest. “The murals are revolutionary. They're anti-American,” said activist Roger Ogden.Ogden was at the picnic and says political radicals and militants run Chicano Park. “It shouldn't be called Chicano Park. They could call it Hispanic Park, Latino Park and celebrate all the Hispanics and not just the militants. If you go down there and wave the US Flag, if I go down there I'm probably going to get beat up.”Ogden and several others shared the video from the picnic and their thoughts with the San Diego City Council on Tuesday.“You can celebrate the Hispanic culture but it should be broader and more inclusive. A lot of Hispanics wouldn't want to be called Chicano because it has a militant aspect to it,” said Ogden.Gonzales says the patriotic picnickers need to have a conversation with someone who understands the murals and who can translate the stories behind the paint.“I think there's a lot of miseducation. People have eyes and love for this park,” said Gonzales.That conversation could become another colorful reminder of the park’s history. 1771

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local family members are reacting to the news that the bodies of two San Diegans who went missing in Mexico have reportedly been found in a well in Baja, California.According to the Associated Press, the Baja California state prosecutor’s office said in a statement that 78-year-old Ian Hirschsohn and 73-year-old Kathy Harvey were discovered in a well, south of Ensenada, Mexico.On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department sent ABC10 News the following statement: “The U.S. Department of State's top priority is the safety and security of U.S. citizens. We are aware of reports that local authorities have discovered the remains of two people near San Quintin and are closely monitoring their ongoing investigation.”On Tuesday, ABC10 News spoke to Hirschsohn's son-in-law over the phone. He said that family members are not yet ready to go on-camera but they want viewers to know what a senseless tragedy this is. They’re trying to accept the reality that Hirschsohn and Harvey may have been murdered but they’re yet entirely convinced that the bodies found are those of the retired couple. However, San Diego Police confirmed Tuesday that positive identification was made.“He went to Mexico a lot. I'd say he went down at least every couple of months,” Hirschsohn’s Solana Beach neighbor and friend Jim Dietz told ABC10 News on Tuesday. He described Hirschsohn has a highly-intelligent, active and well-traveled man. Those words were echoed by his son-in-law.“He was a real gentleman. He wouldn't say an unkind word about anybody,” said Dietz who added, “I feel very bad for [his kids] because they lost their mother a few years ago and now they lose their father in this kind of a tragic way. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lego fans will have more to look forward to in 2019, as Legoland California plans new attractions in celebration of its 20th birthday.Among one of the park's 2019 offerings: Free admission for kids 12 and under on their birthday, starting in January."Having a chance to reflect on the last 20 years ahead of next year’s birthday celebration, it’s incredible to think about all we’ve accomplished during that time and the amount of kids we positively impacted through their experiences at the Resort," said park General Manager Peter Ronchetti.RELATED: Southern California theme parks ring in the holiday seasonAmong the new additions for 2019, Legoland said it plans to add new attractions and live shows for visitors to experience.One new addition will be a new attraction inspired by "The Lego Movie." The park will host special "Lego Movie" festivities from Feb. 16 - 17 and 23 - 24 around the park ahead of the attraction's opening.The park's resort is also getting a special zone geared toward toddlers modeled after Duplo. The play town will add an express train in the park and kids will be able to ride, slide, and hide in the interactive area.Also being added is a "Lego 4D-Officer in Pursuit" film that will play at the park's theater and new live character shows at the Miniland Stage.It's not exactly clear when the new additions would be opened to guests in 2019. 1458

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime is rolling its dockless scooters and bikes out of San Diego, a month after a hearing officer ruled the company could keep its operating permit.Lime announced Thursday they would not be renewing their permit to operate in San Diego but would monitor the opportunity to return in the future.“As part of our path to profitability, Lime has made the difficult decision to exit San Diego and focus our resources on markets that allow us to meet our ambitious goals for 2020," a statement from Lime said. "We’re grateful to our team members, riders, Juicers and communities who supported us throughout this journey. We appreciate the partnership we’ve enjoyed with San Diego and remain hopeful we can reintroduce Lime back into the community when the time is right."RELATED: City Council committee OKs changes to dockless scooter, bike lawThe company said it tried to work with city leaders on compliance and safety concerns, but was instead forced to defend its permit — which it did successfully. Lime added that the city's most recent regulations have led to a decrease in ridership and that the city has not been transparent when it comes to towing by city-contracted and private towing companies.In December, city council leaders voted to ban electric scooters from the city's boardwalks at Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay Park Bayside Walk, and La Jolla Shores. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local activists are accusing the city of San Diego of slow-playing their proposal to create an independent commission on police practices - to the point that it died.The measure would have created a board with subpoena power. And the ability to launch its own investigations.The board, which would have been called the Independent Commission Police Practices, would have addressed several of the concerns raised by the County Grand Jury about the city's Community Review Board.Those concerns include a lack of subpoena power, access to only some complaints, and an appearance some find too closely linked to the San Diego Police Department. Women Occupy San Diego's proposed an independent board that would have subpoena power."We would have independent investigators who would talk to the witnesses, who would look at all the documents, who would do the same things that (Internal Affairs) does," said Kate Yavenditti, a local attorney and one of the group's members.Women Occupy San Diego filed the measure in March, but earlier this month the City Attorney's said the San Diego Police Officers Association and the Municipal Employees Association needed to be consulted before it could go to the November ballot, due to a law called the Meyers Milias Brown Act.A city attorney memo said the the organizations needed to be conferred with because the measure could impact their working conditions.Yavenditti said she learned of this at a rules committee meeting on July 11, and the City Council didn't docket the issue until Monday, just less than two weeks before the Registrar of Voters deadline for the November ballot.It was too close, so the council voted not to move it forward."At this point, there's nothing we can do about it except talk about what we believe was a deliberate delay," Yavenditti said. A city spokeswoman said this measure was treated the same as all the others that were vying for the November ballot. Jack Schaeffer, president of the San Diego Police Officers Association, said he stood by the current Community Review Board. He noted it has trained experts doing investigations, they pick apart all the evidence and come to appropriate conclusions."It's almost like a big audit of what we’ve done as investigators," he said. "If you look nationwide, a few different ways to do police oversight and not one of them is really any better the other."Yavenditti said her group is now eyeing the proposal for the 2020 ballot. 2489
