The Scripps National Spelling Bee has a new study resource, “Words of the Champions,” for students participating in spelling competitions occurring between August 2019 and March 2020. The Bee selected the 4,000 words for Words of the Champions from the Bee’s official dictionary, Merriam-Webster Unabridged. Words of the Champions replaces “Spell It!,” a collection of 1,150 words used by students to prepare for spelling bees since 2006. Each year, the Bee will refresh Words of the Champions by replacing 800 words. “Spellers and teachers told us they wanted more words, and we’ve delivered,” said Paige Kimble, executive director for the Bee. “This broader list was designed to challenge and inspire students and is the culmination of a year of research and development by our team.” Nested in Words of the Champions are 450 words sourced from the 18 engaging and grade-appropriate books included in the Bee’s 2020 Great Words, Great Works reading program. By reading the books, students can gain a deeper understanding of the words they are learning to spell. The overall quality of a new, model year 2019 vehicle was no better than in 2018, despite the average vehicle price increasing from year to year.In a study released Wednesday by J.D. Power and Associates, it measured the number of problems experienced during the first 90 days of ownership. Based on this standard, the study found 13 brands improved, while 18 worsened. Overall, it found that there were 93 problems per 100 vehicles with new cars. Some models, on average, had more than one problem per vehicle. The study found that Genesis was the best performing brand in 2019 with 63 problems per 100 vehicles. Genesis was followed by Kia with 70 problems per 100 vehicles. The worst performing auto brand was Jaguar with 130 problems per 100 vehicles. “Automakers continue to make progress in areas like infotainment that attract a lot of consumer attention,” said Dave Sargent, Vice President of Global Automotive at J.D. Power. “However, some traditional problems crept up this year including paint imperfections, brake and suspension noises, engines not starting and the ‘check engine’ light coming on early in the ownership experience.
