(AMD) on Thursday said it plans to cut its global workforce by about 10 percent in a move to reduce operational costs.The layoff will occur across all functions globally and is expected to be substantially completed by the end of the first quarter of 2012, the company said.The cuts will amount to about 1,400 jobs, according to estimates by analysts.Combined with implementing efficiencies across the company's operations, AMD expected that the workforce reduction will result in operational savings of more than 200 million U.S. dollars in 2012."Reducing our cost structure and focusing our global workforce on key growth opportunities will strengthen AMD's competitiveness and allow us to aggressively pursue a balanced set of strategic activities designed to accelerate future growth," Rory Read, AMD's chief executive officer, said in a statement.As the world's second largest maker of processors for computers, AMD has been suffering from the slowdown of global PC market and is seen as slow to move into new mobile device market.The operational savings will help accelerate the company's future growth in lower power, emerging markets and in the cloud computing field, AMD said.

ULAN BATOR, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia will continue to curb the spread of HIV and strive to maintain a low prevalence of the AIDS epidemic, a government official said Thursday.Gansukh Battulga, an official with the National Committee on AIDS, told Xinhua that Mongolia is currently an HIV low-prevalence country with a total of 99 people, 15 of whom have died, infected with the virus that causes AIDS."Among the 99 HIV infected cases, 81 percent are men, and the remaining 19 percent are women," Battulga said. "Among the male infected cases, 83 percent belong to MSM (men who have sex with men) group while sex workers account for 54 percent of the female infected cases."The official said the government has launched a variety of programs and tasked the National Committee on AIDS to coordinate all organizations in fighting the epidemic.According to a National Strategy Plan for 2010-2015, Mongolia will strive to maintain its current low HIV-prevalence rate of below 5 percent in the most-at-risk population.

The data leak is being looked into by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation.Anonymous Finland claimed on Monday responsibility for the publication of personal details of thousands of Finns. The group temporarily published a sample of information on 16,000 people as proof of the hack. The hack was motivated by an apparent desire to shame the Finnish government into improving data security.Finnish National Bureau of Investigation has not confirmed the claims that a loose group of hackers known as Anonymous was behind the data leak.The list that was put on the Internet contains the names, full social security numbers, addresses, telephone numbers, street addresses, and email addresses of the victims. Budnitz, MD, MPH, director of the CDC's Medication Safety Program.And the four types of medication -- two for diabetes and two blood-thinning agents -- account for two-thirds of those drug-related emergency hospitalizations. They most often cited: warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven); insulin; antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix); oral hypoglycemic agents."Both blood thinners and diabetes medicines are critical drugs that can be lifesaving," Budnitz says.However, he says that ''these are medications that you do need to pay attention to," being sure the dose and timing are correct, among other measures.
