DENVER (KMGH) -- You could call it the very definition of the old expression of being in "the right place at the right time" when several emergency room doctors saved a man's life at a Denver sandwich shop.The doctors happened to be in town for a conference of ER doctors. They were on a lunch break Monday afternoon at Snarf's on Champa when the man walked in and collapsed."He went into cardiac arrest. His heart stopped beating, stopped pumping blood," said Dr. David Levy. Levy was alongside several of his former residents and a pair of emergency physicians from New Jersey, who all jumped into action."We did chest compressions. We shocked him with the [defibrillator]," he explained.The man was without a pulse three separate times, but the team was able to revive it in time for medics to arrive and transport him to the hospital."Everyone expects this to happen in a hospital in a controlled environment, but when you’re there, and it happens on the floor of a restaurant it takes you by surprise," Levy said. "He would have died if no one was there to intervene."As of Monday night, the man had survived the ordeal and was being treated in the intensive care unit.And what did this group of hero doctors do next?"We washed our hands, sat down, and finished our lunch," Levy said.Levy would go on to win three separate awards that night as part of the convention, the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. 1478

DENVER – The Denver City Council on Monday approved a pilot program to allow for a supervised injection site in city limits by a 12-1 vote, though the Colorado General Assembly will have to pass a measure allowing for such sites before anything can move forward.If approved, Denver would be the first city in the United States to have a safe-use injection site. Philadelphia and New York City have similar proposals in the works.The council passed the measure 12-1 after it passed its first reading last week in an 11-1 vote.The Denver measure allows for a pilot program that will allow for a supervised injection site for two years where intravenous drug users can use under supervision and where trained staff will also be able to administer Narcan, an overdose antidote, and medication that blocks the effects of opioids.The measure was put forth by councilman Albus Brooks, who has pushed the measure due to the high numbers of fatal overdoses in Colorado – one-fifth of which occurred in Denver last year."Many of our neighbors in Denver are struggling with this public health crisis. To do nothing would be a grave injustice. That's simply not who Denver is," Brooks said in a statement Monday evening. "The pilot program created by this ordinance is a sign that our city is committed to saving the lives of our neighbors."No public funds will be used for the site; it would be operated by a nonprofit or government entity that works with addicts. The site will have to be more than 1,000 feet from schools and daycare centers.The injection site would provide access to clean syringes, fentanyl testing strips, overdose antidotes and counselors who can refer people for substance use disorder treatments and medical and mental health services.Council members toured a similar injection site in Vancouver earlier this year as the General Assembly considered a safe injection site bill, which ultimately failed.The General Assembly will have to pass a new bill that allows for local municipalities to start such safe injection sites before Denver’s can move forward. Democrats are pressing Equifax to offer more protection to millions of Americans after last year's massive data breach.In a letter Tuesday, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee asked Equifax's interim CEO to offer customers at least three years of credit monitoring and identify theft protection. DETROIT — A 12-year-old girl takes a challenge and a dare that could have cost her life.It’s called the "fire challenge." Young people pour flammable liquids on their bodies and set themselves on fire.Brandi Owens says her 12-year-old daughter Timiyah Landers did the challenge with her friends last Friday.She ended up engulfed in flames. Brandi and her fiance extinguished the blaze from her baby girl and rushed her to the hospital.Timiyah is now at Children’s Hospital with second and third-degree burns over 49 percent of her body. Her mom says kids find these dangerously “outrageous” challenges on social media and Youtube. She is angry and has a message for those behind the sites that post these videos.“They need to delete this mess," Owens said fighting back tears. "It should be censored. That’s nothing that a kid should come across. I could have lost my baby, by the grace of God she’s alive. If I wasn’t home, I would have walked in to my baby dead."Owens says Timiyah knew better. So, she is urging parents to monitor their kids, their friends and their internet and social media platforms.Timiyah will likely be in the hospital for several months and will undergo several more surgeries. 1272
