The FDA warned the public on Thursday to not use hand sanitizers packaged in containers that may appear as food or drinks and may put consumers at risk of serious injury or death if ingested. The FDA said that some products are being packaged in items such as water bottles and food pouches, and may contain flavors such as chocolate or raspberry. The FDA said that ingesting alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause significant cardiac injury, including death. The FDA said that one consumer bought a plastic bottle of hand sanitizer thinking it was water.“Drinking only a small amount of hand sanitizer is potentially lethal to a young child, who may be attracted by a pleasant smell or brightly colored bottle of hand sanitizer,” the FDA said.“I am increasingly concerned about hand sanitizer being packaged to appear to be consumable products, such as baby food or beverages. These products could confuse consumers into accidentally ingesting a potentially deadly product. It’s dangerous to add scents with food flavors to hand sanitizers which children could think smells like food, eat and get alcohol poisoning,” said FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. “Manufacturers should be vigilant about packaging and marketing their hand sanitizers in food or drink packages in an effort to mitigate any potential inadvertent use by consumers.“The FDA continues to monitor these products and we’ll take appropriate actions as needed to protect the health of Americans.” 1475

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced that they've officially canceled the Oct. 15 debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. In a press release, the commission stated that since both candidates made different arrangements for Oct. 15, the commission will focus on the third and final presidential debate, which is slated for Oct. 22."Subject to health security considerations, and in accordance with all required testing, masking, social distancing, and other protocols, the debate will take place at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee," the commission said in the press release. The move to a virtual debate was as a precaution since Trump tested positive for COVID-19 last week.Trump was airlifted to Walter Reed Medical Center last Friday and then discharged from Walter Reed on Monday.According to the Associated Press, The White House has been mum about releasing any information as to when the president last tested negative for the virus.Trump told Fox Business that he would not "waste his time" with a virtual debate.CNN reported that because of Trump backing out and Biden agreeing to do a town hall with ABC, the commission didn't see the Oct. 15 debate likely happening.NPR reported that another reason behind the cancelation was because the Trump campaign and the commission couldn't agree on safety protocols. The Oct. 22 debate will be divided into six 15-minute segments. NBC News' Kristen Welker, who will be serving as the moderator for the debate, will announce the topics sometime next week. Both candidates have agreed to participate in the Oct. 22 debate, the commission noted. 1665

The country is heading into a COVID-19 winter without fully deploying widespread testing of sewage for traces of coronavirus, a Newsy investigation has found.Wastewater surveillance is one of the few proven tools able to track community spread of the disease, with the potential to help monitor immunity rates from new vaccines."It is frustrating," said David Larsen, an associate professor of public health at Syracuse University's Falk College. "We're going to see a huge amount of sadness over the next few months. And it's not too late to scale up wastewater surveillance at this time to help us with that."Early on, scientists realized infected people shed the virus in stool. The federal government began a big effort for analyzing the concentration of the virus in community wastewater."It's something I think from a national level we need to pursue," Assistant Secretary for Health ADM Dr. Brett Giroir said during a July webinar.Months later, the government has left it to state and local authorities to launch their own programs. For some, that's been a challenge.Newsy learned New York State, for example, suspended its sewage surveillance pilot after a month in part because of an equipment shortage. As a result, testing stopped in four places including Albany and Erie County, home of Buffalo. The University of Buffalo helped lead the project."UB is in the process of acquiring enough materials to continue the monitoring effort moving forward," university spokesman Cory Nealon said in an emailed statement. As with PPE, there is a global shortage of supplies needed to test sewage for COVID.Other places are struggling with how to pay for sewage analysis, with coronavirus aid from Washington running dry."The biggest factor, the limiting factor, is finances," Larsen said. The result is a patchwork of places examining wastewater across the country, mainly big cities and college campuses."It's not really a unified strategy, unfortunately," said Colleen Naughton, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California Merced. She and her team plot testing sites on a map."When you zoom out of course the bubbles are big, so it looks like all U.S. is covered," Naughton said. "But when you zoom in you see it's a bit more spread out."Three states, Iowa, Rhode Island and South Dakota, don't have any surveillance sites at all, she said.Biobot Analytics looks for COVID in wastewater for about 200 cities and counties but has the capacity to do much more, said company president and cofounder Newsha Ghaeli."We're at the beginning, let's say that," Ghaeli said. "There hasn't really been a strong coming together yet around a specific approach or even standards."The CDC is still putting together a national wastewater surveillance system, building out a database not available to the public yet."It is, I think, valuable for the public to see that data and take action as a deciding factor for what activities and what risks am I going to take?" Naughton said. 3019

The E.W. Scripps Company, based in Cincinnati, Ohio announced it has added two television stations to its business, bringing its current total to 35 stations in 26 markets. The stations purchased are ABC affiliates KXXV/KRHD in Waco, Texas, and WTXL in Tallahassee, Florida. Both were owned by Raycom Media."These two stations are strategic additions to our portfolio," said Brian Lawlor, President, Local Media."We have been interested in expanding into Texas for some time as we believe Texas will play an important part in U.S. politics moving forward," Lawlor said of the KXXV/KRHD purchase.Scripps owns WFTS in Tampa, WFTX in Fort Myers and WPTV in West Palm Beach, making WTXL its fourth in the state."The addition of Tallahassee will allow us to better cover the state's politics as we expand our reach beyond 50 percent of Florida’s television households," Lawlor said in a memo to Scripps employees. The announcement follows Scripps’ news Aug. 15 that it has completed the sale of its 34 radio stations for .5 million.Scripps' stations are affiliated with all of the Big Four television networks: ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX. The purchase of the two new stations adds 130 employees to The E.W. Scripps Company and brings it to 17 ABC affiliates. 1277
