LAS VEGAS — An organization in the Las Vegas valley is introducing a new tool to fight opioid overdoses in the area — vending machines.The Center for Behavioral Health in Las Vegas will soon stock vending machines with Narcan, a nasal spray that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.The machines will eventually include personal hygiene kits, safe sex kits, and pregnancy tests but for now, the machines only dispense Narcan."There are numerous kits inside those machines,” Krista Hales at the Center for Behavioral Health said. “The main goal of them was to be dispensing clean syringes for people who are engaging in intravenous or intra-muscular drug use.”First responders like those in the Nevada Highway Patrol have also been trained in the use of Narcan.“It’s readily available to anyone,” Hales said. “I carry one in my car. And I have them in my house just in case because even someone who is taking their medication as prescribed could be at risk for an overdose."In order to use the vending machines, users will have to register for the syringe exchange program at the Center for Behavioral Health. Jared Lorenzen has died at the age of 38, family members confirmed to Matt Jones of Hey Kentucky!Lorenzen was the quarterback of the University of Kentucky football team and was signed by the New York Giants in 2004. He had openly struggled with his weight and had returned to Lexington to team up with the "Now Let's Get Fit" organization to help kids make healthy lifestyle choices.“I just want people to know there is something better out there that will make you feel better about yourself and going out and being out,” said Lorenzen.He was Mr. Kentucky Football 1998. He went to Fort Thomas Highlands High School where he also played basketball and baseball. As a junior, he passed for a Northern Kentucky-record 2,759 yards and 37 touchdowns in 13 games. He won state championship titles in 1996 and 1998 and also went to the Sweet 16 tournament with the boys' basketball team. He would often joke about his weight, but was making strides to get healthier.“I came out of the womb big as can be. But celebrating America's independence could cause trauma for those who have fought for America's independence. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that between 11 and 20 percent of those who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars return home with PTSD. The V.A. said that 12 percent of Desert Storm veterans and 15 percent of Vietnam War vets also have PTSD. While a number of instance can trigger someone to have PTSD, the loud bangs that fireworks cause can be of particular concern for combat veterans.The V.A. says that PTSD can cause veterans to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping. Since 2015, the non-profit group Military with PTSD has distributed yard signs informing neighbors that a veteran with PTSD lives nearby. The signs state "Combat Veteran Lives Here, Please Be Courteous with Fireworks."The signs are distributed nationwide, and can be ordered online. “Courteous to me means remembering that you are not the only one living in your neighborhood," said Jon Dykes, the veteran who made the first sign. "America celebrates our independence on the 4th of July. Not the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th of July. Some fireworks are expected, and that’s OK.
