BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday called on police in Beijing to continue efforts in protecting public stability in the capital city, especially in areas near the Tian'anmen Square.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with representatives from Beijing's special police forces, traffic police, and armed police who were stationed in the Tian'anmen Square. WASHINGTON, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Holding an umber basketball in his hand, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan became the center of attention at the end of the first round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue on Tuesday. The basketball, with Barack Obama's autograph, is a gift from the U.S. president to Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan who is the co-host of the "Economic Track" of the dialogue.     The basketball is considered a symbol of the U.S. government's hospitality and gratitude to Chinese officials for their efforts in making this dialogue a success. BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) to "continue carrying out its functions of political consultation, democratic supervision, and participation and raising proposals in governance, in a practical and effective way."     The CPPCC should make new contribution to boosting the Reform, Opening-up and Socialist Modernization Drive and the great cause of a peaceful reunification of the Nation, and safeguarding world peace and promoting a common development, said Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at Sunday's gathering here to mark the 60th founding anniversary of the country's political advisory body.     Other Party and State leaders present at the commemorative event were Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang. NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama here on Tuesday to exchange views on bilateral ties and other important issues of common concern.     The Chinese president said at the start of their meeting that China-U.S. relations are now showing a sound momentum of development, and the two countries are developing a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship.     A sound China-U.S. relationship is not only in the interests of the two countries, but also conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region and the world at large, Hu said. BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday chaired a meeting on the national pollution survey and urged more efforts to protect environment.     China launched its latest nationwide pollution survey at the end of 2006.     Li said further work should be done to boost environmental protection and tackle serious pollution problems to boost sustainable development in China and improve people's living standards and quality.
